NOBEL: Journal of Literature and Language Teaching publishes articles on literature, language, and language teaching from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to language studies, with special reference to culture, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. This journal always places English language and literature in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any comprehensive observation with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of literature, language, and language teaching, supports studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subjects. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in a scholarly manner.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic analysis of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel by Mark Twain, through Grice’s cooperative principle. The objectives of this research were to analyze the types and implied meanings and to examine the most frequent type of Grice’s cooperative principles performed by the main characters in the novel. This research employed a qualitative research approach by using the content analysis technique. The data were collated by analyzing the utterances that appear in the novel that indicated the disobedience cooperative principle. Grice’s cooperative principle found in this study consisted of two types: the first type was the observance maxim which included the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner. The second type was the non-observance maxim: flouting, violating, and opting out. The result showed that all types of Grice’s cooperative principles were found, and the maxim of violating was the most frequent type of Grice’s cooperative principle found in the novel.

Abstract

Classroom interaction is identified to engage students in responding and interacting with teachers and other students. However, one problem that usually interferes with teacher-student interaction is unpredictable students’ reactions in interpreting the teacher’s utterances. The present research investigated several reasons for students’ responses to teachers’ directive utterances. To reach the objective, a case study was applied. Three eighth-grade students in a Yogyakarta lower secondary school were selected to participate in this study. The data were collected through observation and interviews. Meanwhile, the data analysis was based on Miles’ interactive model. The results of this study show that internal and external variables affect the students’ responses during English classes. A lack of vocabulary and needing extra time to guess are the internal variables to understanding the teacher’s intention. Meanwhile, unfavorable classroom atmospheres resulting from noisy students, noisy next-door classes, and noisy vehicles outside are the external variables that disturb the students’ attention and understanding of the teacher’s directive utterances. The results of this research reveal significant implications for students’ attitudes, as they rarely develop their interaction due to internal and external factors. Thus, the condition requires the teacher’s role as an active language user.

Abstract

This present study aims to investigate various kinds of representative acts performed in Dalia Mogahed's speech entitled "What It's like to be a Muslim in America?" and to analyze the Islamic values that may be contained in the speech. As a qualitative research, the data of the current study were collected by searching and watching speech videos on Youtube and downloading the videos and the speech transcripts. In investigating the representative acts of Dalia Mogahed, this study applied Searle's (1976) theory of representative speech acts in analyzing the data in the forms of utterances produced by Dalia that were collected from Dalia's speeches.  The data that have been obtained were then classified, analyzed, interpreted, and described. The results show that Dalia's 111 utterances were identified as representative acts, consisting of 54 utterances of stating, 32 utterances of describing, 10 utterances of asserting, 9 utterances of informing, 3 utterances of reporting and 3 utterances of predicting. The representative acts in Dalia's speech are reported to contain some Islamic messages.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the language anxiety level and type frequently experienced by English Department first-year students of Wijaya Kusuma University Surabaya. It used a case study as the research design to explain the phenomenon observed. The research participants were twenty-eight English Department first-year students of Wijaya Kusuma University Surabaya. Each of them was given a five-point Likert scale questionnaire adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). The findings unveiled that most first-year students experienced moderate language anxiety levels in which they frequently experienced the fear of negative evaluation. It is suggested that future researchers explore the students’ anxiety levels and types by considering their learning proficiency and habit.

Abstract

This article investigates lecturers’ and students’ perspectives on effective teaching practices in Islamic higher education during the Covid -19 pandemic. The pandemic caused the movement of teaching and learning modes from face to face into online/distance teaching and learning. The different modes of teaching and learning processes may raise a different perspective on effective teaching and learning practices, especially in Islamic higher education. Thirteen English lecturers and 262 English students from the third, fifth, and seventh semesters participated in this survey research. Questionnaires are distributed through Google Forms to collect data on lecturers’ and students’ perspectives on effective teaching practices. The results show that the lecturers and students have good perspectives on four aspects of online teaching (pedagogical, managerial, social, and technological roles) as effective teaching practices in higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, lecturers and students have quite different sequences of most frequent responses on the roles. The three sequences of the lecturers’ responses are social roles, managerial roles, and pedagogical roles. Then the three sequences of the students’ responses are pedagogical roles and managerial roles (two positions: the second and third positions). This different perspective can be a consideration in conducting online teaching and learning.

Abstract

This paper aims to elaborate triviality and seriousness portrayed in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (1898). The play was considered Wilde’s masterpiece, and it highlights the life in the Victorian era. The play portrays the marriage life also the importance of wealth, land, and beauty. This paper employs textual and historical approaches. The findings revealed that the play exemplifies triviality by treating serious things like trivial objects and vice versa. Marriage was seen as insignificant by the male characters in the play. Lane saw it as the reason for the champagne downgrading and a bargaining part for Algernon and Jack to have their goals. Meanwhile, unimportant thing like the name was treated as if it was life matter. Cecily and Gwendolen saw a particular name as the main requirement for choosing a husband. This paper concludes that Oscar Wilde made use of such a technique on purpose to make fun of the Victorian way of life.

Abstract

This paper examines the novel A Gesture Life (1999), written by a Korean American writer, Chang-rae Lee, focusing on the theme of recovering a hidden identity. For this purpose, the persona theory of C.G. Jung was applied as a device for understanding the identity issue. A retired businessman Franklin Hata, born to Korean parents, is a man of multi-identity through adoption to a Japanese family and immigration to America, where he is reputed to be an ideal Asian immigrant. Psychologically suffering from conflict in his relationship with his adopted daughter, Sunny, he reflects on his past and encounters the traumatic memory that he has been holding deep in his unconscious. The findings show that Hata’s aim of assimilating into mainstream society urges him to erase his memory and conceal his identity behind his persona; his reconciliation with his memory helps him stand as a man free from the gesture.

Abstract

Online learning still occurs in many places during the New Normal, along with limited face-to-face learning. However, offline learning in several regions had to be withdrawn because of the new version of the coronavirus. One platform of online learning that is often used is Google Classroom. This study aims to determine the difficulty level of online learning with Google Classroom in STKIP Pamane Talino students in the new normal period. To reach the aim of the study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. Fifty-nine students in the Extensive Reading class of second-semester students of the English Education Study Program, STKIP Pamane Talino, were selected to participate in this study. The data analysis technique used in this study was critical analysis. The data were collected through observation and interviews. The questionnaire results showed that 73% of the respondents agreed with the ease of using the Google Classroom application in online learning, which can be categorized as good. From the result above, it can be suggested that online learning using Google Classroom is one of the alternative ways to online learning in remote areas during the new normal period.

Abstract

The Tamblingan land conflict is closely related to the investment trend heading towards Bali’s upstream area. Investors are converting Tamblingan forest land into hotels and tourism to reap the benefits of nature tourism in the most natural forest. This issue is discussed in the novel Kunang-Kunang Hitam by Geg Ary Suharsani. This paper aims to describe the struggle of the female character Ni Luh Candri in the Tamblingan land conflict as narrated in the novel Kunang-Kunang Hitam (KKH). This study uses a Susan Griffin perspective ecofeminism approach. The results of this study indicate that the struggle of the female character Ni Luh Candri in defending the Tamblingan forest is divided into two forms: Ni Luh Candri’s struggles related to nature, such as refusing land conversion, protecting rare plants, symbolic communication to fireflies and Ni Luh Candri’s struggles related to nature humanistic environment, such as becoming Leak, burning incense, displaying rangda mask, and advocating for communities around the forest. This research proves that women can take various important actions (ecological environmentalism) to preserve the environment.
Expressive Acts Constructing Religious Identity among Indonesian Muslim Influencers on Instagram

Abstract

The study investigated the expressive act constructing religious identity among Indonesian Muslim influencers on Instagram. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with non-participant observation, the data were obtained by documenting the caption of the posts from the selected influencers' Instagram accounts, taking notes, and selecting the relevant data. The data were analyzed using Searle's (1976) theory and the identity theory by Thornborrow (2004) to examine how the expressive act constructs religious identity. The results showed seven types of expressive speech acts performed by Indonesian Muslim influencers; Fadil Jaidi, Atta Halilintar, Ria Ricis, and Lesty Kejora. Those expressive speech acts are thanking, gratitude, praise, apology, appreciation, condolence, and congratulation. There are 53 data found, and most of the expressive acts uttered by the influencers are thanking others. Furthermore, the group identities are constructed by the representation of Indonesian Muslim influencers by which the language variations were identified from the code-switching they employed. There are also four common manners practiced by the Muslim influencers: 1) show mercy towards everyone, 2) have respect and love for the elder/ younger, 3) keep good relations with everyone, and 4) be kind to parents.
