Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on language functions used by the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. The aims were to find the use of language functions and describe the dominant types of language functions used in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. The data were the dialogue of the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie in the first forty minutes of the movie. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The findings show that there are six types of language functions used by the main character in “Sherlock Holmes” movie. They are expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, phatic, and poetic. The most dominant type of language function is metalinguistic. It means that the main character conveys code analysis by asking questions to the people so that he might invent clue for the sake of his investigation.   Keyword : Language Functions, Sherlock Holmes, Movie.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with Speech Function in Jokowi’s Speeches. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of Speech Function, the most dominant type of Speech Function used, and the meaning of the dominantly used. The research on this thesis was carried by using descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from 4 speeches of Jokowi in English. The data were analyzed and classified into four types of speech functions in the procedures namely Statement, Question, Offer, and Command. There are 116 speech functions from 4 speeches of Jokowi. The findings indicated thatthere are Statement 88 (75,86%), Question 11 (9,48%), Command 17 (14,66%), and there is no Offer in Jokowi’s Speeches (0%). Statement as the most dominant type of speech function is used in Jokowi’s speeches it’s mean give or state information, the way of the speaker to deliver the information about the Jakarta city’s problem and how to solve it, the speaker’s planning for Jakarta, and give thanks for the audience in Jakarta Anniversary to the audience by using statement.     Key words: Speech Function, Statement, Question, Offer, Command

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with Repression and Displacement of Main Character in Elizabeth Gilbert’s Novel Eat, Pray, Love. The objectives of this study were to find out the causing of repression and the displacement in the novel. This study was limited to analyze Liz as the main character. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel Eat, Pray, Love. The findings indicated that Liz got repressions which are triggered by two factors; the crisis of self identity and marriage conflict. And then the displacement that occurred to the main character after getting repressions were losing faith about marriage, disorder eating habit, and converting new orientation of spiritual life.   Keyword        :  repression, displacement, character, novel

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the types of ideational metaphor in Bruno Mars’ Songs. The objectives of this study are to find out the metaphorical codes applied in Bruno Mars’ songs and the reason of the writer to use metaphorical codes in the songs. The data are the song lyrics of Doo-Wops & Hooligans taken from internet. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design to explain the grammatical metaphor coding. The finding shows that there are six types of ideational metaphor occur in the album, they are: material process, mental process, relational process, verbal process, behavioral process and existential process. The study shows that Material Process is the dominant which presented the action, activity, doing or happening to tell about Bruno Mars’ experiences.     Keywords: Grammatical Metaphor, Linguistics, Descriptive Qualitative Design

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. The objectives of study are to find out type of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie, to derive the dominant type of politeness strategy that is produced by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie and to elaborate the context of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. The data are dialogue of the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design and only focused on the main character. The research findings are positive and negative politeness strategies. There are fifteen strategies of positive politeness and twelve strategies of negative politeness in a letter to Juliet movie. The most dominant politeness strategy uttered by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie was positive politeness strategy. Among them is intensify interest to hearer is dominant type of positive politeness strategy. This type of politeness strategy occurred since character mostly just shared about her experience and inform to other.   Keywords: Politeness strategies, positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Ellen Degeneres Talk show. The objectives of this study were to describe the types of illocutionary Acts which were used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, to discover the type of illocutionary act which was dominantly used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, why it is dominant and to elaborate in what contexts the dominant type occurs. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. It took two episodes of Ellen Degeneres Talk Showwhich is taken randomly from internet. Based on the analysis, not all types of illocutionary acts were used in Ellen Degeneres Talkbecause Declarative is not found.There were 326 utterances in two episodes selected, and the percentages of data were 43.86% ofassertives, 30.67% of directives, 18.40% of expressives, 6.13% of commisives and 0% of declaratives. The writer does not find declarations in the dialogue because there is no utterance that has a function that can change the world or the status of people through speaker’s utterance. The most dominant type of illocutionary acts found was Assertives. It shows that in their conversation the host most gave information and statement because it happened in the context of talk show where Ellen as the host gave some information about her guess star, information about the theme of the show and also about guest’s personal life and career.   Keywords:Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of cohesive devices used in Headline News of The Jakarta Post. The objectives of study are to identify and to derive the types of cohesive devices dominantly used in headline news of the Jakarta Post. The data are taken from headline column of The Jakarta Post from online edition. There are seven articles which are analyzed in this study. This research is conducted by using descriptive method. The findings show that there are 162 references, 4 substitutions, 34 Ellipsis, 349 conjunctions, and 36 lexical cohesion occur in this study. The most dominant type of cohesive devices is conjunction because the writer would like to connect ideas within the text to make its readers easy to understand. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was focused on the types of politeness principles. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were the transcript of Barrack Obama’s interviews which were downloaded from internet. The findings showed that there were 31 utterances which contained 6 types of politeness principles. Obama tended to use the expressions of agreement maxim (51,61%), approbation maxim (22,58%), generosity maxim (12,9%), tact maxim (6,45%), modesty maxim (3,22%), and sympathy maxim (3,22%). The most dominant type of politeness principles was agreement maxim which means that Obama tried to minimize disagreement between self and others and maximize agreement between self and others. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with theme in “pepongoten” at Gayo wedding ceremony. The data were taken from informants and tape recorded of the Gayo wedding ceremony which was taken directly from SebukuInenMayak and Sebukuine in Pepongoten. Besides, some books of Gayowedding ceremony were used to complete the data. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive. It gives description about the theme used in Pepongotenat Gayowedding ceremony. The analysis of this research was data collection, data reduction, data display and at last data verification. The findings show that there were three types of theme used in Pepongoten, they are Textual, Topical, and Interpersonal. Those types of Theme and functions of theme reflected Gayonese cultural values namely politeness, respect to the elder, friendly and resoluteness value. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on semiotic used in A Mild Go Ahead. The aims are to find the use of semiotic and identify the meaning in A Mild Go Ahead.The data werethree television advertisements from A Mild Go Ahead entitled “Satu Aksi = Segalanya, We Are One and Free, and Orang Pemimpi. The researchwas conducted by using descriptive qualitative research.The findings show that there were three elements of semiotic used, such as representamen (qualisign, sinsign, legisign), object (icon, index, symbol), and interpretant (rheme, decisign, argument),which then devided into 9 types of semiotic;Qualisign (0),Legisign (9), Sinsign (34), Icon (12), Index (27), Symbol (4), Rheme (9), Decisign (19) and Argument (16). The most dominant type of semiotic in the advertisements is sinsign, and it means that A Mild Go Aheadpersuade their audiences by showing the real example of their products.
