Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the two types of conversationalimplicature, they are; generalized conversational implicature and particularizedconversational implicature and to describe the reason of the most dominant typeof conversational implicature. This research was conducted by using descriptivequalitative. The data was collected by applying documentary technique such as;collecting reference and journal related to the study, searching and selecting thesource of data, downloading the data from youtube, and transcribing the script ofthe show. The data were taken from six segments of one episode of Mata Najwa’stalk show. The two types of conversational implicature were occurred in theepisode of Mata Najwa’s talk show. The findings of data analysis showed that thetotal numbes of conversational implicature was 84 occurrences. The two typeswere Generalized Conversational Implicature 49 (58.33%) and ParticularizedConversational Implicature 35 (41.67%). The most dominant type ofconversational implicature was Generalized Conversational Implicature. It showsthat the interviews usually used the clear, brief and straightforward statements inorder to avoid the ambiguity and to make the listeners were able to understandwhat he/she said. And also this program is expected to give information,interested and give some positive lessons to the listeners.

Abstract

This research focused on the meaning of slang language used by the characters in 22Jump Street Movie. The research was conducted by using qualitative method. Thedata were collected from the movie script. The objective of the study was to find outthe meaning of the slang language used by the characters in 22 Jump Street Movieand also the reason why the characters used the slang language. The data were takenfrom the movie script which was downloaded from the internet. The data wereanalyzed by using Eric Partridge’s theory about slang. The result showed that themeaning used by the characters were contextual meaning, depending on the situationor given context of the scene. The result show that only several slang language thathave literal meaning. The reason of using slang language in this research was toreduce seriousness of the conversation since the movie was a comedy-action genre inwhich the comedy and action must be appeared at the same time.

Abstract

The study deals with the use of connotative meaning especially inDarwisTereLiye’s quotes. In this study the researcher focuses on the three maintypes of connotative meaning namely positive connotative, negative connotativeand neutral connotative. The data that support this study are obtained by applyingdescriptive qualitative method by selecting and then analyzing some quotes ofDarwisTereLiye on facebook. The findings show that there are three types ofconnotative meaning in DarwisTereLiye’s quotes. There are positive connotative,negative connotative and neutral connotative. Positive connotative as thedominant type that found in this research.

Abstract

The study deals with those oppressions faced by Black American in “12 Years aSlave” movie and what resistances they showed toward those oppressions. Theobjectives of the study are to describe the oppressions faced by the two maincharacters – Platt and Patsey and to explain the resistances they shown in “12Years a Slave” Movie. This research focuses the study merely on oppressionfaced by two main characters; they were Salomon Northup or Platt and Patsey.This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design and limitedon two of main characters. The data analysis result was found five kinds ofoppression faced by black American in this film, those were: powerlessness,exploitation, marginalization, culture imperialism and violence. The resistancesshown by American toward those oppressions were revolt, radicalism, asking forhelp and religion or spirituality. The issue of racism with oppression had been thecrucial issue since long time ago which could not be denied that until nowadaysthe issue of racism is still happening though without oppression. The stigma ofBlack was being inferior and white was being superior had driven mind into thedestruction of race relationship between Black and White. However, in this filmwe could see how badly the oppression faced by black American and how theystruggled for fighting toward those oppressions.

Abstract

The study deals with the Figurative meanings that consist of hyperbole, simile,metaphor, personification, and symbol. The objectives of this research were tofind out the types of figurative meanings used in Secondhand Serenade’s songlyrics and to describe the dominant one type of figurative meanings. This researchwas conducted by using qualitative method. The sources of the data were albumsand lyrics of Secondhand Serenade and the data were 67 sentences of secondhandserenade’s song lyrics. After analyzing, it was found that there were 67 sentencesof Secondhand Serenade’s song lyrics. The findings of this research were foundthat 30 (44.77%) hyperbole, 14 (20.89%) symbol, 11 (16.41%) simile, 7 (10.44%)metaphor, and 5 (7.46%) personification. Hyperbole 30(44.77%) becomes thedominant type of figurative meanings in secondhand serenade’s song lyrics.

Abstract

This study deals with the type of language style used in Mario Teguh GoldenWays Talk Show. The objectives of this study are to find out the most types oflanguage style, to describe how the most dominant language style used and toreason for the use of the most dominant language style used by Mario Teguh inMario Teguh Golden Ways Talk Show. The study was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were utterances of MarioTeguh in Mario Teguh Golden Ways Talk Show. The findings of this researchare the most dominant of language used by Mario Teguh in Mario Teguh GoldenWays is consultative style (60.6%) followed by casual style (32.45%), frozen style(5.2%), formal style(1.8%) and intimate style (0%). In this talk show Mario Teguhtends to use consulative style while he was speaking with the participants toprovide more explicit background information of the participant’s problems. Theconsultative style in all context is used to make audiences easily understand howthe topic is going on in their life.

Abstract

Ellipsis is omission of words which has been understood well from the omissionwill not change the meaning of the utterance itself. We can find mostly ellipsis inspoken language. One of spoken languages we can use as the medium in learningellipsis is movie script. One of many great movie scripts is The Fault in Our Starsmovie script by Scott Neustadter& Michael H. Weber. The aim of the research isto find out the use of Ellipsis by ‘Hazel’ in The Fault in Our Stars movie script.This research is descriptive qualitative research since it analyzes the use of ellipsisby ‘Hazel’ in the movie script. The data are the ellipsis which are used bycharacter ‘Hazel’ in each her utterances in The Fault in Our Stars movie scriptfrom 50 scenes. The result of the research shows there are three 124 utterancesconsist of 31 Nominal Ellipsis with 25%, 4 Verbal Ellipsis with 3.23%, and 89Clause Ellipsis with 71.77%. The most dominant type of Ellipsis that used bycharacter ‘Hazel’ in The Fault in Our Stars movie script is Clause Ellipsis with 89total numbers and total percentages 71.77%. It means people in havingconversation want to be as effective as possible since the most complexgrammatical unit is a clause. From this research, I hope the readers, lecturers, andstudents should apply ellipsis appropriately in their daily conversation in order toavoid misunderstanding in the conversation since ellipsis appears mostly in theinformal context and daily conversation.

Abstract

This study deals with feminism Spirit’s reflections on ‘Jordan O’Neil’ in G.I Janemovie. The study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative approach. Theobjectives of the study are to find out kinds of oppression faced by O’Neil and herfeminism spirit’s reflections in term of oppression that she had faced. The data arecollected from dialogues and scenes in the movie. The object of the study isJordan O’Neil as the female main character. The study revealed that there arethree major oppressions faced by O’Neil according to Young’s theory: beingmarginalized,exploited and experiencing powerlessness. Feminism Spirit’sreflections on Jordan O’Neil in term of oppression that she had already faced arethree major parts: being persistent, independent, and courageous.

Abstract

This study deals with the use of sexist language in Dagelanaccount on Instagram.The objectives of this study were to find out the dominat type of ambivalentsexsim and the most prominent gender discussed in Dagelanaccount. This studywas conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collectedfrom Dagelanaccount in Instagramby capturing some pictures that have captionsrelated to sexist language and then analyzed into two types of ambivalent sexismtheory, hostile sexism and benevolent sexism. The result showed that there were24 sentences related to hostile sexism and 26 sentences related to benevolentsexism. The using of benevolent sexism is the most dominant used inDagelanaccount and the most prominent gender discussed in Dagelanaccount isfemale in hostile sexism.

Abstract

This study deals with the types of repetition and hesitation in deliveringimpromptu speech. The objectives of the study were to describe the kinds ofrepetition and hesitation which used in impromptu speech and why the repetitionand hesitation used in delivering impromptu speech. This research applieddescriptive quantitative method. The source of data was impromptu speech ofEnglish Education class b 2012. Documentary recording as the instrument tocollect the data and there were five students to deliver impromptu speech. Thedata were taken from the utterance of five speechs in impromptu speech intoclauses.There were topics prepared for five topics, each speaker varied oneanother to deliver impromptu speech.The speakers were given 3-5 minutes(maximum) to deliver impromptu speech. Based on the analysis, there were 61utterances of repetition, the result of the analysis showed that two kinds ofrepetition; 59.01% of false start and 40.59 % of parentherical remark. And 205utterances of hesitation, the result of the analysis showed that three kinds ofhesitation; 28.78% of filled pause, 43.90% of silent pause and 27.31% oflengthening. The reason why the repetition and hesitation used in impromptuspeech because the speakers forgot the words when they were talking or speakerare looking for the right words. Not everyone could speak fluently for all topics ofimpromptu speech. In general, people were talking, thinking that the hesitationwas more difficult than repetition.
