Abstract

This study dealt with figurative language in Amir Hamzah’s selected poems. The objective of this study were to investigate the types of figurative language found in Amir Hamzah’s selected poems and to find out the literal meaning of figurative language found. This study was conducted by using qualitative method to solve the problems. The data of this study were phrases and sentences contained figurative language in the poems. The sources of data were six poems poems which had multiple series taken from Amir Hamzah’s Poetry Anthology of Buah Rindu. The data were selected by using random sampling technique. For collecting the data, this study used documentary technique, and the instruments of data were documentary sheets. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The findings of this study are there twenty two figurative languages found as follows, three figurative language of metaphor (13.63%), seven figurative language of hyperbole (31.81%), five figurative language of personification (22.72%) and seven figurative language of simile (31.83%). The literal meaning of figurative language found in Amir Hamzah’s poems were basically was about the love story of Amir himself and also talking about his longing to his mother.Keywords : Figurative Language, Figure of Speech, Poem

Abstract

The research was found on the topic about  The Cultural Values of batak Toba in Batu Gantung Local Tradition in Samosir Island. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from the informants who live around Samosir Island, Kabupaten Simalungun. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research based on The Cultural Values in Sibarani (2013). The result of this research was The Cultural Values of Batak Toba in Batu Gantung Local Tradition in Samosir Island are Seeing Each Other Frequently, Honesty (30%), courtesy, social solidarity, harmony and conflict resolution (60%), welfare, hard work, discipline, mutual cooperation, gender management (80%) and education, health, cultural preservation and creativity, environmental concern, peace, commitment, positive thoughts, and gratitude. Abstract

The title of this thesis is Racism in Terry George’s Movie Hotel Rwanda. This study is aimed to analyze what kinds of Hutu’s oppressions occurred in the movie, and what are linguistically realized toward racism. The writer applies the theories from Iris Marion Young about oppression in black America society (1990).Based on its form, Young was divided oppression into 5 types, they are (1) exploitation, (2) marginalization,(3)powerlessness, (4) culture imperialism, and (5) violence. Racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement. Oppression is when a person or group in a position of power controls the powerless in cruel and unfair ways. The writer focuses on the analysis of oppression based on Hotel Rwanda script, and finally oppression is found as the most dominant thing that the depict racism in the movie.. Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind of traits which represented by Baby in Baby Driver movie by Edgar Wright. The study of Characterization has been thrived in recent centuries. Personality Traits study in a movie is an interesting way to develop and identify some character in movies. The study used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study were dialogues and statements from Baby which related to the Personality Traits theory in the movie script. The source of the data was Baby Driver movie. The findings of the Big Five theory analyzed by described the utterances and statements from Perlocutionary Act findings. It was found that there were five traits represented by Baby along the movie. They were (1) Introvert/Extrovert, (2) Neuroticism, (3) Conscientiousness, (4) Openness to Experience, and (5) Agreeableness. This study also proved that conflicts always happened in human being, especially teenager. At one time, a person chose to be introvert and in the next day he or she chose to be extrovert. Characterization learning was believed as a tool to differ one character of a movie or real-life individual from another.Keywords: Personality Traits, Speech Act, Perlocutionary Act.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the syntactical repetition on selected poems by Maya Angelou namely Still I Rise, Caged Birds, Alone and Woman Work. The technique of collecting the data was to download the selected poems.  The data were analyzed  and found four repetition that he said . The repetition is Anaphora, Epiphora, Framing, and Anadiplosis.  Our research found that the repetition used to stress the author’s goals on her poem.  It can be make people remember her intention in her poem.
