Abstract

If post-critical moment is applied to the metaphor of the Kingdom of God, that is, the biblical text of the Kingdom, understanding constitutes incorporation of the world-reference and the project of hope. As a result, the central truth-content of the Kingdom of God in Luke 17:20-36, the Kingdom of God is within you, must be seen as provoking a ‘proposed world’, a world of possibilities which must be projected. The texts of the Kingdom reveal a surplus meaning: an eschatological vision, reflecting existential limitation of articulation of the Kingdom as well as a project of the Kingdom of humanity. From the perspective of mimesis theory, how the contemporary readers ‘identify’ themselves with the world of text demonstrates a followability of text. In post-critical moment, the power of the text becomes an actual ‘will’ to project the ‘impossible demand’ as the impact of textual participation with the interpretive mode of engagement-detachment. What prominent in post-critical moment is that a ‘program’ of the Kingdom is placed under the project of hope. In hermeneutic principle, the revealed truth as, part of faith truth, must be interpreted as both ontological and eschatological vision. ‘Vision’ functions as a meta-critical understanding that always destabilizes existing awareness and brings it to a futuristic horizon or eschatological openness.

Abstract

Most of the content of the Scriptures are conveyed in narratives telling God’s acts of salvation. The communication of the narratives in a vigorous way can give weight to faith confession, liturgy, and catchesis. Christian faith proclamation is basically a series of narratives telling the story of life, death, and resurrection of Christ as has been told by the Scriptures and retold in narratives. A ‘narrative analysis’ is a method that has its advantages on the ‘narrative world’ with all the images and imagination. By entering the narrative world constructed by the authors of the Scriptures, the reader participates in the ‘world of images’ presenting the meanings contained in it and that brings a useful faculty for the contextual praxis of proclamation. This model of communication places the author and the reader in the same ‘narrative world’ though with different experiences. A narrative analysis is not so much a ‘door’ opening to the past behind the narratives as a ‘mirror’ projecting particular images, i.e. the narrative world, so as to provide an ability to the reader to absorb the meanings conveyed in the narratives and to experience their saving power.

Abstract

In the present world, there are rampant acts of violence, hatred and crime which have left a long trail of victims. Victims of crimes and ‘acts of God’ are traumatized not just by physical injuries but much more by the psychological torture of self-blame and un-forgiveness. To initiate a process of healing, the offender must seek for forgiveness; the victim must forgive as a means of liberating the offender and himself, and the process must entail a structure of restitution, for to forgive without requiring the other to change is not only self-destructive, but ensures that a dysfunctional relationship remains. Hence, a liberating forgiveness, even though it is growing in the act of not holding things over people, must be executed in such a manner that it neither approves, nor excuses the offense as to give the offender the leverage to perpetrate his crime.

Abstract

Cosmology is not limited to the questions of the origin and the end of all beings or to the law and order of the universe from the perspective of modern sciences. One can perceive cosmology as a knowledge model of the universe which sets in a non-Western model of knowing. The Sundanese cosmology is an example of this model. Instead of mathematical and physical explanation, it focuses on the mythological description of the universe. Such description can be found in narrative poems (pantun) and pious lessons. This paper observes the non-western knowledge model and puts it in its context, which is geographically equivalent to Southern and Eastern Asia. An overview of the Rig Veda and Daodejing is included to describe the cosmological models in these cultural contexts. The Sundanese cosmology reverberates these models. An elaboration of Sundanese narrative poems and an old Sundanese manuscript, Sewaka Darma, indicates the similarities of the Sundanese cosmology to the cultural contexts and the knowledge models referred to. The Sundanese model enacts ‘mountain’ and the metaphor of ‘filled nothingness’ as the cosmological model. The Sundanese cosmological model portrays a down-upward journey to experience ‘moksa’ (the ultimate enlightment). This journey utilizes meditative practices and everyday deeds by means of our social and cultural roles.
