Abstract

In the Catholic Church, there are three ways or states of life: (1) married life, (2) celibate life as priest or religious, and (3) celibate life as lay person. Ideally, each individual can only choose one of these three states of life for the rest of his or her life. Therefore, in order to be able to choose and to live their life choices responsibly, an individual is required to have maturity in physiological, emotional, intellectual, and interpersonal aspects. This article attempts to describe one of the aspects of human maturity, namely the “affective (emotional) maturity”, in relation to the choice of celibacy as a religious person. The significance of human affectivity lies in its correlation with other aspects of maturity. Affectivity is a ‘machine’ for an individual that is more than intelligence or spiritual facts. It is connected with human biological reality as a force or a drive that enables individuals to act or behave. As is well known, vocation to the religious life (to become a priest, monk, or nun) in the Catholic Church is marked by the commitment of the person to live the three evangelical values: obedience, poverty, and chastity. Those called to religious life are obliged to behave and to be oriented in accordance to their vows. In this context, affective maturity becomes a measuring tool as well as a fundamental requirement to be able to respond to and to live this demanding religious vocation.

Abstract

Written ages ago, insights from the Fathers of the Church have shed light upon the way of doing theology from generation to generation until today. Their contribution is long-lived and such is also true in the case of St. Justin Martyr. His pivotal idea of logos spermatikos, developed to cross and connect the then seemingly unbridgeable systems—Greek philosophy and Christianity—proves to be valuable to this day. A rereading of his thought can be fruitful for constructing a way of doing theology that is open to the world, for the key concept of this apologetic father invites one to do theology not from one’s small enclosed world, but from the perspective of a dialogue; hence the related metaphors are encounter, connectedness, and conversation. Contemporary theologians whose concern is to keep creating a more dialogical theology may benefit from Justin Martyr’s exploration of logos. His legacy helps theologians today obtain a new vision. In this way, reading the Church Fathers is not so much of a study on some irrelevant fossils as a leap towards an ever-better future of doing theology.

Abstract

In proclaiming Christ as the savior, the Church is in touch with the diversity of the local cultures. In the spirit of its founder, the Church becomes humble and is open to the dialog with the local cultural traditions, one of which in this article is the Toba Batak culture. This research aims to display the inculturation of marriage liturgy with the music of gondang sabangunan Batak Toba, particularly in the closing rite after the signing of marriage documents and during the procession of leaving the church in the Roman Catholic rite. This article makes use of the interview approach and the equivalence method. Through the inculturation of the marriage liturgy, the local church is in dialogue with the Toba Batak culture. It is an appropriate way for the Church to convey the Gospel message, by embracing elements that are unique and rich in the music of gondang sabangunan Batak Toba and relating them to the Christian teaching. The sacred values found in the musical of gondang sabangunan support the nobility and the dignity of a Catholic marriage. This inculturation can be seen as an encounter of Christ, the Church, and the local culture. While the process takes time, this exploration of an inculturation in liturgy can bring the faithful, especially the Batak Toba people, towards the experiences of repentance, holiness, and salvation.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the missionary nature of Mary’s role in conceiving and giving birth to Jesus Christ. The method used to achieve this goal is spiritual-theological interpretation of Mary’s role as a mother who conceived and gave birth to her son Jesus. From the spiritual-theological perspective, “conceiving Jesus” can be interpreted as experiencing union with Jesus, whereas “giving birth to Jesus” as revealing Jesus to others. This article refers to the reflections of the Church and theologians as primary sources, by way of a literature study. It finds the spiritual-theological meanings of the role of Mary in conceiving and giving birth to Jesus in line with the identity of a missionary. A missionary is basically a person called to union with Christ and to carry on the mission to reveal and to proclaim Christ to the world. This paper brings forward some ecclesiological implications, in face of the growing spiritual individualism and the spirit of competition in the life of faith. These tendencies are not in accordance with the missionary nature of the Church and therefore the Church needs to find insights to reshape its presence in the world today.

Abstract

In Catholicity, one of the Gospel values integrated in the formation of a priest is the spirituality of poverty. A diocesan priest also needs to live the spirituality of poverty as a way of life by living a simple and modest life. Today, however, on the one hand the spirituality of poverty is less considered as a requirement of a priestly way of life. On the other hand, living a simple life becomes more of a witness to the world that is constantly influenced by consumerism. In daily life, a priest must commit himself fully to the ministry, without expecting anything in return. An honest and total service of the priest will form a required personal quality that is realised in the three priestly duties, that is, as “priest, king, and prophet”. When reflected on in the vocational life of a diocesan priest, the spirituality of poverty will need to be explored further in face of the many challenges existing in the world today. Seeing the different perspectives of this spirituality, even if its is not considered as a requirement for the diocesan priest, might bring the inner potentials of this way of life to the surface.
