Abstract

This paper discusses the analysis of the concept of asbāb al-wurūd in hadith based on the thoughts of Lenni Lestari, Widia Putri, and Zakiyah, along with their colleagues. According to Lenni Lestari, the study of asbāb al-wurūd focuses primarily on the sources behind the emergence of the hadith, distinguishing between the sources of knowledge of asbāb al-wurūd and the sources of the events themselves. Meanwhile, Widia Putri emphasizes that asbāb al-wurūd plays a central role in shaping a solid understanding of Islam, as it serves as the contextual spirit in interpreting hadith texts. On the other hand, Zakiyah and her colleagues propose that a study based on the theory of double movement should be conducted to ensure the continued relevance of hadith in modern life. This research aims to review the relevance of Lenni Lestari, Widia Putri, and Zakiyah's ideas in underscoring the importance of the asbāb al-wurūd methodology as a tool to discover the ideal moral principles contained in hadith and to actualize them in the context of contemporary realities. To achieve this goal, this study employs a library research method with a qualitative approach. The results indicate that to revive the existence of hadith, a mechanism of double movement is necessary: returning to the socio-historical context of the Prophet's time to uncover the moral principles of hadith, and then bringing those principles into present-day reality through the process of contextualizing values. With this approach, hadith can maintain its relevance and vitality in the face of changing times.

Abstract

This paper explains the origin and development of the concept of the division of hadith science into Dirāyah and Riwāyah and its relevance to the division of hadith science in the context of modern hadith studies. The author addresses the following issue: first, what is the origin and development of the concept of the division of hadith science into Dirāyah and Riwāyah? Second, what is the methodology used in each branch of hadith science? Third, what is the relevance and role of the division of hadith science in the context of modern hadith studies? This paper is a literature study that uses qualitative research methods based on literature research with a descriptive-analytical approach. The primary sources of this paper are taken from the books of ulumul hadith, which are complemented by secondary sources in the form of other relevant literature. This research concludes that Hadith Science is divided into two main branches: Dirāyah Science and Riwāyah Science. The science of Dirāyah focuses on critical analysis of hadith, including two assessments: first, the sanad (chain of narration), including connectedness, trustworthiness, and safety from irregularities and defects. Secondly, the matan (content of the hadith) focuses on compatibility with the Qur'an, irregularities in wording, meaning, and foreign terms. Meanwhile, Riwāyah Science focuses on the collection, writing, and narration of hadith. Through methods of collection from companions, systematic writing, filtering of hadith, and preservation through memorization and recording, this science ensures the authenticity and preservation of hadith. These two branches complement each other in ensuring that the hadith received and understood by Muslims are sahih and have high scientific integrity.

Abstract

This paper offers a critical review of the article “The Urgency of the Science of Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl in Determining the Authenticity of Hadith” by Muh. Haris Zubaidillah, Basyrul Muvid, and Srifariyati. The article underscores the crucial role of Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl in evaluating hadith authenticity by examining the reliability and credibility of narrators within the chain of transmission (isnād). The authors argue that this discipline forms a key mechanism in hadith criticism, where both isnād (the chain of narrators) and matn (the textual content) are fundamental components in verifying the validity of a hadith. This review applies a library research method with an analytical approach, focusing on the coherence of arguments and the methodological design presented by the original authors. The review appreciates the authors' consistency in affirming the significance of Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl as an essential discipline in hadith studies. It also highlights the necessity for hadith scholars to possess competence in this field to determine the acceptability or rejection of transmitted narrations accurately. Additionally, the review commends the authors’ reflective efforts to respond to skeptical perspectives that challenge the reliability of Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl as a scientific approach. However, it also notes a critical shortcoming: the article does not sufficiently develop a strong and systematic argument to counter orientalist critiques that question the authenticity of hadith. Strengthening this aspect would enhance the article’s academic contribution and its role in contemporary discourse on hadith criticism.

Abstract

The study of hadith in the Islamic scientific tradition so far tends to give a larger portion to the sanad aspect than the matan. As a result, criticism of matan hadith is less methodologically developed. In fact, matan is the core of the substance of the hadith that determines the main meaning and message. The validity of matan is very crucial in maintaining the integrity of Islamic teachings. The two main loci in matan criticism that are often used as indicators of defects are shādh and 'illah. However, the implementation of criticism of these two elements has not been standardized in a consistent and structured evaluative system. This article aims to explore the principles of the validity of matan hadith according to classical and contemporary scholars, with a primary focus on the elements of shādh (irregularities) and 'illah (hidden defects). This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method. Data sources are taken from methodological literature such as the works of Ajjāj al-Khaṭīb, Nūr al-Dīn Itr, Shuhudi Ismail, as well as contemporary thought on the criticism of matan hadith. The results show that although the conditions for the absence of shādhz and 'illah are widely known, the practice of matan criticism is often still intuitive and not based on a solid methodological framework. This article finds that many matan hadiths that are considered valid because their sanad are strong, but they are substantially problematic, either because they contradict the Qur'an, common sense, and historical context. This study recommends six practical steps for matan criticism: (1) verification of sanad, (2) linguistic analysis, (3) inter-matan muqāranah, (4) content analysis, (5) maqāṣid al-syarī'ah approach, and (6) contextualization through asbāb al-wurūd. This approach is expected to be a more objective, scientific, and relevant system of eye criticism in answering contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This article explores the epistemological and methodological development of asbāb al-wurūd as a pivotal framework in contemporary hadith interpretation. Recognizing the growing need for contextual reading of prophetic traditions, this study addresses the theoretical shifts from a normative-textual paradigm to a more interdisciplinary approach involving history, sociology, and anthropology. Using a qualitative library research method, the author examines seven scholarly articles published between 2011 and 2021 to map typologies, methodologies, and relevance of asbāb al-wurūd in Indonesia’s academic discourse. The findings reveal that contemporary scholars do not merely rely on transmitted reports (micro-level) but extend to macro-contextual analysis, interpreting hadith in light of socio-cultural and political realities of the Prophet’s era. Some scholars emphasize reinterpreting gendered or controversial traditions by employing social sciences to recover ethical meanings consistent with human dignity and justice. Others integrate asbāb al-wurūd into educational frameworks to foster critical thinking and spiritual awareness among students. Although variation in rigor and consistency among the articles is observed, the overall trend underscores the urgency of re-engaging hadith studies with contextual sensitivity. This article concludes that asbāb al-wurūd is no longer a mere explanatory tool but a dynamic hermeneutic method that bridges the gap between textual authority and the evolving realities of Muslim societies, thus reinforcing the living relevance of hadith in contemporary Islamic thought.
