Abstract

Today, it is estimated that up to 20-25% of the world's electricity consumption is for pumping equipment. Up to 85% of the operating costs of pumps are electricity costs. The E.F. of pumping systems often does not exceed 10-20%, while the E.F. of pumps is 50-90% [1,2]. Since reducing energy consumption is a priority for the company, economic efficiency in general is directly linked to the use of pumping equipment. In this paper we discuss the current problems in analysing and investigating the pressure characteristics of centrifugal pumps.

Abstract

Female genital mutilation is still strongly supported and done in some communities in Delta State despite the campaign against it. This is because of the sociocultural factors that support this practise. Determinants of female genital mutilation in Delta State's rural and urban populations are therefore examined in this paper in terms of sociocultural factors. The study made use of cognitive dissonance theory. The use of both a questionnaire and an extensive interview schedule was part of a mixed technique study. Using the Yamane sample size calculation, 400 people were chosen as the study's sample. The study's participants were chosen using a multi-stage sampling technique. To test the study's hypotheses, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation method was employed. According to the study, female genital mutilation practise complicates childbirth for both mother and baby. This is due to poor hymen cutting, which makes it more likely for the mother and child to get infectious infections as a result and put their health at danger. According to the study, female genital mutilation should be discouraged through education and increased anti-mutilation campaigns.

Abstract

This paper examined the problems that have militated against university autonomy in Nigeria. Secondary data were used to provide empirical support for the paper. Data were collected from both print materials and online publications. The paper concluded that integration of the federal universities into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), centralization of the university system, centralization of admission, governing council dominance, poor implementation of the university Autonomy Bill and poor funding model of public universities are the tools used by the Nigerian government to undermine universities autonomy in Nigeria. Based on these challenges, the paper hereby suggested that the federal government should remove all federal universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) platform and implement the University Autonomy Bill Act of 2004.

Abstract

Womanhood is a concept that has attracted an intensive scholarly gaze spanning multiple disciplines. The focus here is on womanhood as imagined, and demonstrated in the Nigerian milieu. In different historical epochs from pre-colonial to post–colonial Nigeria, the production of knowledge about women was and continues to be essentialized, contested and negotiated. It is the aim of this paper to show the problematic ‘woman’ in pre-colonial Nigerian society. The dictionary definition of womanhood describes it as “a state or condition of being a woman”. The question this begs is what does it mean to be a woman? Do women have a commonality as observed in the case of people of the same race? Efforts to answer this question throw up the definitional murkiness of the ‘woman space’. The complexity of the category “woman” is seen in the different meanings attached to it historically, from the philosophical constructions of the woman in classical antiquity as an ‘underdeveloped man’; to the Victorian woman as ‘the angel in the house’, the domesticated wife; the colonized woman as hapless victim in need of saving and the postcolonial narrative of womanhood as one of difference in performance. Given that womanhood as a performative act is context specific, this paper revisits the precolonial Nigerian woman, in her complexity and knowledge production. The work adopts intersectionality as its theoretical framework to understand the crisscrossing of social, and political identities, roles and duties of women in pre-colonial Nigeria and how they experienced being a woman from different positions of power and social status. The paper contributes to the literature on African women.
