Abstract

Taboo words on social media are often used for various purposes. In certain cultures, taboo words may be considered offensive and shameful. In addition, taboo words are also used to emphasize something, which means that not all of taboo words are considered as negative words. Therefore, a public figure named Gary used taboo words to express his opinion and provide motivation through his posts on Instagram. Methodologically, this research was included in qualitative descriptive research. In general, this study examined the use of taboo words with the aim of identifying the different types and functions of taboo words in a motivator's post on Instagram using the theory of types of taboo words by Batistella (2005) and the functions of taboo words by Wardhaugh (2006). The findings in this study revealed that Garyvee used 3 types of taboo words, namely obscenity, epithets, and profanity. From a total of 36 data, there were 27 obscenities, 2 epithets, and 1 profanity. However, this study also found that although taboo words were literally considered as negative words, in Garyvee's case, it was found that taboo words could have both negative and positive meanings. Furthermore, in this study, from the 4 functions of taboo words, 3 functions were found, namely to be provocative, to draw attention, and to show contempt. The most common function found in the findings was to draw attention to other people because in this case taboo words were used to express the speaker's messages and attract the audiences to keep giving attention on the motivator's contents.

Abstract

One of literary devices that can be applied to literary works is irony. The irony as literary device is a figure of speech in which the speaker’s meaning is far from the usual meaning of the words or quite the opposite. In this study, the author analyzed the irony in novel The Amulet of Samarkand, to get in-depth explanation of the types of irony in the novel, how it was portrayed and how it was connected to the plot of the story. Furthermore, this study was part of literary criticism since the researcher analyzed the literary work by new criticism theory. The data were interpreted and analyzed using Kennedy’s theory of irony (1991). The findings revealed that there were five kinds of irony found in the novel, which included verbal irony, dramatic irony, cosmic irony, situational irony, and ironic point of view. The researcher also found that each of the irony worked to the plot as it played roles as an agent to move the plot to its rising action and climax, and it worked to emphasize some important points in the plot as well. The important points in the plot that were emphasized by the irony covered the naivety of Nathaniel, the discrepancy of the thing being done and its result, and the cunny nature of the demon.

The results of this study indicatde that there were four types of dysarthria experienced by Luis, namely hypokinetic, hyperkinetic, flaccid, and spastic. The main problem that caused Luis’s dysarthria was hypokinetic. Oppression often occurs in the community. It can be due to poverty or existing habits. One of the novels by Abi Dare entitled The Girl with Louding Voice was one of the novels talking about the oppression received by the main character (Adunni). The novel was the main data source in this research. The aims of the study were to find out what oppression Adunni was experiencing as the main character and to explain Adunni's struggles to get out of this oppression. The researcher used a feminist critique approach with textual studies to analyze the data and apply Young’s oppression and Lerner's feminism theory. The oppression includes powerlessness, cultural imperialism, marginalization, violence, and exploitation. Adunni experienced all those things. It resulted in her having to stop her education, marrying forcibly, getting abused and being defrauded and having many wounds all over her body. However, she never gave up because she had determination and big dreams. She believed that continuing her education to the highest level would free her from oppression. Therefore, she made several efforts, such as persuading her father, asking for help, studying and teaching, running away from home, giving resistance, avoiding certain people, refusing to get pregnant, and participating in the selection of a scholarship.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify the kinds of turn taking strategies used in the first American Presidential Debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as to classify the functions of the turn taking that occured in the first American Presidential Debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The researcher employed a descriptive qualitative approach because the data were derived from Donald Trump's and Joe Biden's utterances on YouTube video, which was transcribed and analyzed using Sterntörm's (2014) theory of turn taking strategy; taking the turn strategy, holding the turn strategy, and yielding the turn strategy. The data were analyzed by determining the context, categorizing the data based on the theory, analyzing and interpreting the data, and drawing conclusion based on the findings. The findings revealed 35 data from Donald Trump’s utterances, with the most strategy used was alert that occurred twelve times, while he never used hesitant start strategy. On the other hand, 20 data were obtained from Joe Biden’s utterances. In fact, Joe Biden also employed alert strategy as the most utilized strategy which was the same as Donald Trump, but the occurrence was only five times. In addition, Joe Biden did not apply four turn taking strategies which were hesitant start, metacomment, silent pause, and appealing. One important point to note was that both candidates utilized alert as the most used strategy, which functioned as interrupting the other speaker by raising the tone of his voice in order to attract the attention of the interlocutor.

Abstract

This research examined psycholinguistic analysis of speech responses experienced by autistic people in Special Books by Special Kids YouTube Channel. The aims of this research were to identify the types of responses produced by autistic people, and to analyze how these types of responses were realized by autistic people in Special Books by Special Kids YouTube channel. It is important for us to understand that autistic people were able to respond and understand what other people said because there were still many people who thought that people with autism were people whose words were always considered untrue and could not be fully trusted. It was just because they were more focused on themselves so they had difficulty in getting along with those around them. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with 17 videos as the data sources. The data of this research were responses uttered by autistic people. This study used Rothwell's theory (2000) of autistic response in conversation and Cook’s theory (1971) and Searle's theory (1979) to explain the types of utterances spoken by autistic people in the video. The results of the study indicated the response that appeared the most was the cognitively relevant response from 60 utterances out of 92 data. This proved that autistic people could respond relevantly to the conversation even though they had difficulty in communicating with other people.
