Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the type of strategic compliment spoken by the teachers and the type of compliment response spoken by the students to answer the compliment they received at Al-Masduqiyah Islamic boarding school. The relationship between praise and the environment of the Islamic boarding school in this study explained that the use of language also depended on the environment. Therefore, a person with a different social background could lead to different language and word speech. This study used descriptive qualitative method because this research required the selection of qualitative data to form a descriptive analysis. The participants of this study were English teachers and students at the Al-Masduqiyah Islamic boarding school. This study used two theories, each proposed by Wolfson (1993) and Holmes (1983). The findings of the speech of compliment and compliment responses in this study contained 66 data. In the compliment speech, divided in two categories, 11 and 55 data were found for every category. Meanwhile, in the compliment response, divided into three categories, 45, 16, and 5 data were found for each category respectively. The research conclusion revealed that the word occurrence of a compliment spoken by the teacher was based on students' abilities, and the compliment was able to motivate students in learning activity. The most significant compliment response expressed by the students was the accept type. Further, the students also ignored and rejected the compliment.

Abstract

This study aimed to discuss Jack's hero's journey stages and how he encountered obstacles in The Christmas Pig. This study was categorized into literary criticism using a psychological approach by applying Campbell's hero's journey theory (2004) and supported by Allison & Goethals' theory of obstacles (2011) in the hero's journey. The data were taken from words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs in the novel The Christmas Pig by J.K. Rowling. The data were identified and interpreted, and then the conclusion was drawn. There were two results from this study. First, Jack passed all seventeen stages of the hero's adventure stages involving the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, belly of the whale, the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as the temptress, atonement with the father, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, refusal of the return, the magic flight, rescue from without, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds, and freedom to live. Second, Jack encountered the obstacles by getting help from the allies, using his intelligence, being tough and patient, strong determined, and optimistic. In summary, Jack's hero's journey was completed, but it was not easy and full of obstacles. The researcher suggested further researchers to analyze The Christmas Pig by applying post-modernism, structuralism, or symbolism and analyzing different literary works using Campbell's hero's journey theory.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out what events caused Eden's trauma and the way Eden overcame her trauma in the novel The Way I Used to Be written by Amber Smith. This research was included in the category of literary criticism that used Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis as its research approach and Sigmund Freud's trauma theory to analyse the data. The source of data in this research was the novel written by Amber Smith entitled The Way I Used To Be. The research results revealed that the cause of trauma experienced by Eden was sexual abuse by Kevin. Apart from that, other components supported the increasing sense of trauma experienced by Eden. In this research, Eden's ways to overcome the trauma she experienced were also found, which included being honest about something happened to her, overcoming her feelings of guilt and shame, getting ready for disappointing flashbacks and memories reconnecting to her body and feelings, staying connected with her friends, and taking care of herself. Based on this research, the novel entitled The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith could be used to illustrate how to deal with trauma. For this reason, readers could use this novel as research material with topics other than trauma issues, such as how Eden's personality changed after recovering from her trauma of sexual abuse.

This study aimed to identify the widely used metaphors and analyze the meanings that construct the reality of 'life' in the literary work entitled Dreams, Spelled in Poetry (2021) by Helena Natasha. Poetry data taken were a collection of poems with the theme 'The Call.' The method used by the researcher was descriptive qualitative by combining two theories; first, to identify the types of metaphors used by the poet in the poem with the theme 'The Call' and to analyze the conceptual metaphors that shape reality the researcher used the theory of Lakoff and Johnson (2003) and second, to identify the 'life' reflected in the researcher's poetry the researcher used the theory of Kovecses (2007). Correspondence elaboration or concept mapping was used to conceptualize the relationship between the source domain and the target domain to construct the reality of 'life.' This study tried to conduct a cognitive semantic study of the concept of life in Helena Natasha's poetry from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The analysis results showed that the type of metaphor used by Helena Natasha in the poem with the theme ‘The Call’ was dominated by ontology metaphors with fifteen data. Furthermore, the author managed to find two concepts contained in the poem with the theme ‘The Call’ that succeeded in shaping the reality of 'life,' namely, 'ambition is fire/light', and 'life is a journey'.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the social action forms of the main characters in the novel A Man of The People according to Max Weber's Social Action Theory. The theory used in this research was Max Weber's social action. The approach used was a sociological approach that focused on literary works because the phenomenon of social action that occured in society was often poured into literary works (Damono, 2004, p. 12). The method of this research was literary criticism. The research data were in the form of excerpts from the contents presented through conversations and narrations as social reality and depictions of social actions carried out by the main characters in the novel. The results obtained from this study were four types of social actions done by the main characters in this novel and how they achieved their own purpose based on their social actions. In the rational-instrumental action, Mr. Nanga did his action 7 times, while Odili only used instrumental actions once. In traditional action, it was found that there were 3 actions related to tradition or actions that were carried out from generation to generation. In the value rational action, it was found that there were 4 actions that were all carried out by Odili. As for the affective action, Odili took 6 actions. This proved that Odili's moral value was higher to achieve his goals. He used more efficient instruments that were counter-humanist such as instrumental rationality just like what Mr. Nanga did. Yet, Odili's goals were not fully fulfilled because his country was overthrown by the Military and his party was dismissed.
