Abstract

Effectiveness of Coping Strategy Training Based Problem-Focused Coping (PFC) on Pre-Match Anxiety Levels of UNDIKMA Petanque Athletes Abstract This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Problem-Focused Coping (PFC) training in managing pre-competition anxiety and enhancing self-confidence in Petanque athletes at Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika (Undikma). Using a pretest-posttest one-group design, 25 Petanque athletes participated in a six-week PFC training program. Anxiety levels were measured using the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), covering cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence. The results showed a significant decrease in both cognitive and somatic anxiety, and an increase in self-confidence following the intervention. The average cognitive anxiety decreased by 10.76 points, somatic anxiety decreased by 11.12 points, and self-confidence increased by 9.44 points. Paired Sample T-Test results showed significant outcomes (p-value < 0.001) for all three dimensions, indicating that PFC training is effective in reducing anxiety and enhancing self-confidence. This study reinforces the importance of problem-focused coping strategies in competitive sports contexts, especially in sports requiring high levels of concentration and composure, such as Petanque.
