Abstract

This article aims to analyze the novel The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry through intrinsic and extrinsic elements. This article analyzes qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. This study focuses on four aspects: theme analysis, character analysis, plot and setting analysis, and extrinsic context including the author's historical background. From the results of the analysis, 4 elements were found: (1) prominent themes in the novel The Little Prince, such as loneliness, friendship, love, and the serch for meaning; (2) the development and nature of his unique character; (3) The author's reflection on his life, especially when he was a pilot and faced the harshness of war, greatly influenced the depth of meaning and symbols scattered throughout his narrative; and (4) moral and existential messages conveyed through the story. Through contemplative reading, the researcher found that the harmony between the intrinsic elements and the author's life background created layers of emotion and messages that transcended cultural boundaries. This study proves that qualitative literary analysis is not only a tool to appreciate the beauty of language, but also a window to understand the human values that live in it.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of politeness strategies in the animated film Frozen 2 using Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness. As a continuation of Disney's popular franchise, Frozen 2 features a variety of characters interacting in emotionally charged and socially complex situations. This research aims to identify and analyze the types of politeness strategies employed by the main characters and to understand the purposes behind their usage. The qualitative method was applied in this study by collecting data from the script of the movie and analyzing utterances that reflect politeness strategies. The findings reveal the total number and types of politeness strategies used in the film, including bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategies. The most frequently used strategy was positive politeness, which indicates the characters' tendency to build solidarity and maintain friendly relationships. The study concludes that Frozen 2 demonstrates a wide range of politeness strategies, reflecting the characters' social dynamics, personal intentions, and emotional development. This research contributes to understanding how language and politeness intertwine in media targeted at young audiences and may serve as a reference for further linguistic and discourse analysis.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to examine the application of politeness strategies in the daily conversations of teenagers in their hangouts at their friend's house. This study use qualitative method. Language is not just for communication but also crucial for establishing and maintaining relationships in society. People use politeness strategies, such as those proposed by Brown and Levinson, to enhance communication harmony by focusing on maintaining "face," which is an individual's public self-image that should be respected during interactions.Politeness strategies help minimize Face Threatening Acts (FTA), which occur when actions go against the wishes of others, potentially damaging their face through non-verbal cues or expressions. The concept of politeness involves showing concern for positive and negative face needs, where positive face desires approval and respect, while negative face seeks freedom to act without hindrance. Linguists like Mouton, Lakoof, Watts, Holmes, emphasize the role of politeness in minimizing conflicts and showing concern for others' feelings. Keywords : Politeness, Brown & Levinson, Teenagers.

Abstract

This research investigates the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing in digital content, focusing on the language styles used by Zhafira Aqyla in her YouTube video “Cerita Anak Pondok yang Kuliah S1 di Inggris.” The problem addressed is the widespread use of English and Indonesian in daily communication, particularly among youth, without a clear understanding of the types and functions of code-switching and code-mixing. The study aims to identify the types, functions, and dominant forms of these linguistic practices in Zhafira’s content. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research utilized the researcher as the main instrument. Data were collected by transcribing and analyzing utterances from one specific YouTube video, with Zhafira Aqyla as the subject, and categorized based on established linguistic theories. The analysis revealed that Zhafira predominantly used insertion as the main type of code-mixing, with 30 occurrences, while tag-switching was the most frequent form of code-switching, followed by inter-sentential and intra-sentential switching. The primary functions identified include clarifying meaning, expressing bilingual identity, maintaining conversational flow, and engaging the audience. The research concludes that code-switching and code-mixing are not only communicative strategies but also stylistic choices that enhance digital content’s relatability and educational value. These findings highlight the importance of multilingual practices in digital media and their potential as effective tools for language learning and audience engagement.
