Abstract

The ship's machinery system has a central role in supporting shipping operations, both in terms of transporting logistics and passenger transportation services.Although designed with high accuracy standards to ensure maximum and optimal performance, this system is still at risk of technical problems, one of which is excessive vibration and noise. This kind of condition not only has an impact on the comfort and safety of the ship's crew, but can also be an early signal of potential damage to engine components. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of excessive vibration on damage that occurs to bearing and shaft components in ship engine systems. The study was conducted through a case study approach on a ship engine unit that showed abnormal symptoms in the form of increased vibration levels. By conducting vibration measurements, visual inspection, and component condition analysis, it was found that bearing wear and shaft misalignment were the main causes of the disturbance. The evaluation results revealed that component imbalance and errors in the installation process were the main triggering factors for the increase in vibration levels, even exceeding the recommended threshold. This had a direct impact on the engine's operating temperature, decreased efficiency, and risked overall system damage. These findings emphasize the importance of regular vibration monitoring and the implementation of preventive maintenance to avoid more  serious damage to the ship's machinery system.

Abstract

The working environment on board a ship, especially in the engine room, has high levels of noise and vibration due to the operation of the main and supporting engines. Exposure to noise and vibration in the ship's engine room is a significant risk factor for the health of the crew, which can cause hearing loss, musculoskeletal disorders, work stress, and decreased productivity. The study was conducted by collecting data on noise levels (using a sound level meter) and vibration (using a vibration meter) in the area. Exposure to noise and vibration in the ship's environment is a serious threat to the health of the crew that requires a comprehensive K3 approach. The noise in the engine room is above the NAB, which is 85 dB, so PPE is needed to reduce the noise level. The combination of engineering, exposure management, and proper use of PPE (ersonal protective equipment) has been shown to reduce health risks by up to 60% based on selected studies.

Abstract

This research was conducted to understand the extent to which excessive vibration can affect bearing damage and shaft misalignment in a ship's main engine. Uncontrolled vibration is often a primary cause of damage in machinery systems, particularly in moving or rotating components. In this case study, the approaches used included direct observations and vibration amplitude measurements at several critical points, such as the shaft and bearings. The measurement results indicated that the vibration amplitudes at Bearing 1, Bearing 2, and Shaft B exceeded the allowable standard threshold, indicating significant wear and misalignment. These findings are consistent with previous studies that have shown a strong correlation between increased machine component vibration and a higher risk of failure. Based on this, the study emphasizes the importance of routine vibration monitoring as a preventive measure to detect damage early and avoid more severe operational disruptions. By implementing an effective vibration monitoring system, the reliability of the machinery system can be improved, and the service life of the ship's main engine can be extended.

Abstract

The maritime industry plays an important role in supporting global trade. However, behind its strategic role, ship operations also have impacts that cannot be ignored, both on the health of the crew and on marine life. This research aims to gain a deeper understanding of how the vibrations and noise generated by ships affect the physical and mental conditions of the crew, as well as their impact on marine life. The research was conducted through the measurement of vibration and noise levels on various types of ships, accompanied by a survey on the health and well-being of the crew. The results show that long-term exposure to vibrations can cause disturbances in muscles and bones, increase stress, and disrupt sleep quality. On the other hand, the underwater noise generated by ships has been proven to disrupt the communication abilities and migration patterns of marine mammals, as well as affect the reproductive processes of fish. These findings underscore the importance of awareness regarding the environmental impact of maritime activities, as well as the need for strategies to reduce vibrations and noise to create a healthier working environment for crew members and to maintain the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

Abstract

Abstract

Ships are a means of transportation used to transport people or goods. Ships are often used for the needs of transporting large quantities of goods over long distances. One of the factors considered in the ship design process is ship vibration. Vibration is a periodic or repeated movement after a certain time interval called the period. Vibration on the ship is something that has a significant influence on the structural resistance and comfort of the crew. Vibration analysis needs to be carried out to ensure the durability of the ship's construction. Ship construction that is unable to withstand the vibrations it experiences is at high risk of structural failure. Vibration on the ship is also something that can only be dampened and cannot be completely eliminated. The vibrations that occur can cause damage to the ship's structure, components, both machinery and electronics, and can affect the comfort of the crew or passengers.

Abstract

Watugong Village, located in Alok Timur District, Sikka Regency, is a traditional agricultural area where maize serves as both a staple crop and an integral part of local cultural heritage. However, post-harvest processing—particularly the shelling of maize kernels from the cob—is still conducted manually, leading to inefficiency and reduced grain quality. Attempts at mechanization through modern machines have often proven unsuitable due to their high cost, complexity, and incompatibility with the needs of small-scale farmers. To address this issue, the Mechanical Engineering Department of Politeknik Cristo Re developed a 20 kg-capacity maize shelling machine that is ergonomic, affordable, and easy to operate. Powered by a 0.75 kW electric motor, the machine employs a transmission system comprising pulleys, V-belts, and a silent chain, enabling it to increase shelling efficiency by more than 4.5 times compared to manual methods. Performance tests show a shelling capacity of up to 400 kg/hour with minimal kernel damage. The novelty of this machine lies in its participatory design approach and use of locally available materials and components. This innovation serves as a tangible example of appropriate technology grounded in local wisdom, supporting improved productivity, farmer self-reliance, and sustainable food security in rural communities.

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue that has multidimensional impacts on human life, including in Indonesia. In response to this challenge, the government developed the Climate Village Program (PROKLIM) which prioritizes community empowerment through a community-based approach. This program aims to strengthen climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts through participatory local resource management. This study uses the K-Means clustering method to group areas based on environmental characteristics at the Neighborhood Association (RW) level, in order to identify patterns and support decision making in effective environmental management. This study proves that the K-Means Clustering method is effective in grouping RWs in South Jakarta based on indicators relevant to the Climate Village Program (ProKlim). The latest report from the World Meteorological Organization (2024) states that 2023 was the hottest year in history, with an anomaly (Hasbullah & Assyahri, 2025) of global temperatures reaching 1.45°C above the average temperature in the pre-industrial era. Furthermore, the last nine years (2015–2023) were recorded as the period with the hottest consecutive temperatures in the history of climate records. The segmentation results show clear differences between groups in terms of levels of vulnerability to climate change, community engagement, and environmental preparedness. This grouping provides a strong, data-driven analytical basis, allowing the South Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) to use it as a strategic reference for more targeted and targeted planning and implementation of ProKlim.

Abstract

Advances in information and communication technology have made information an important element in people's lives, including education and literacy. The high demand for information has encouraged the application of data mining techniques that combine statistics, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to extract useful information from big data. In the context of libraries, data mining can be used to analyze borrowing and visit data to understand user needs patterns. In Indonesia, low reading interest remains a serious issue. Data from PISA (OECD) and UNESCO reports indicate that Indonesia's literacy skills and reading interest levels are below global standards. Many students are not accustomed to accessing reading materials outside of textbooks and rarely visit school libraries, which should serve as centers for literacy. The grouping was based on features such as student names, class, book titles along with publishers and authors, and the date and time of visits to the library. This data was categorized into three groups: high, moderate, and low reading interest. The clustering results using the K-Means Clustering algorithm at SMP Negeri 01 Salem show that the majority of students (118) fall into the low reading interest category, 13 students into the moderate category, and only 1 student (Dian) into the high reading interest category. Evaluating the quality of the clusters using the Davies–Bouldin Index (DBI) yielded a value of 0.2966, indicating very good cluster quality—a low DBI value indicates compact and clearly separated clusters. These results prove that the K-Means algorithm is effective in grouping students based on reading behavior. With this segmentation, schools can develop data-driven literacy strategies: tailoring book collections to each cluster's preferences, conducting special programs for students with low reading interest, and involving students with high reading interest as literacy ambassadors. This approach is expected to increase student engagement and strengthen the reading culture at school.
