Abstract

This study aims to explore the local knowledge possessed by traditional fishermen in Atapupu, Belu, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in ship engine maintenance. Using a qualitative approach, this study collected data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results of the study indicate that local knowledge possessed by fishermen not only includes engine maintenance techniques, but also involves cultural and environmental aspects that influence maintenance practices. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more sustainable fisheries policies and the preservation of local knowledge.

Abstract

Limestone mining in Flores has had significant impacts on the environment and local communities. Communities face a variety of challenges, including ecosystem damage, changes in soil quality, and socio-economic impacts. This paper aims to explore the adaptation strategies implemented by the Flores community in dealing with environmental changes due to mining activities. Through a qualitative approach and secondary data analysis, this study identifies various adaptation strategies, ranging from sustainable natural resource management to strengthening community capacity in dealing with mining impacts. The results show that although communities have adopted several adaptation strategies, there are still major challenges that must be overcome to achieve environmental and social sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perception of local workers towards the implementation of K3 (Occupational Safety and Health) standards in construction projects taking place in Belu Regency. With the increasing construction activities in this area, it is important to understand how local workers view and respond to the implementation of K3 standards, which play an important role in maintaining their safety and health in the workplace. The methodology used in this study was a survey with a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents working in various construction projects in Belu Regency. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods to provide a clear picture of the perceptions of local workers. The results of the study indicate that although most local workers are aware of the importance of implementing K3 standards, there are still challenges in its implementation, such as lack of training, adequate facilities, and in-depth understanding of K3 procedures. This study also identified several cases of work accidents that occurred due to non-compliance with K3 standards, which emphasizes the need to increase awareness and training for local workers. Thus, the results of this study are expected to provide recommendations for stakeholders in improving the implementation of K3 standards in construction projects in Belu Regency.

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of the implementation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations regarding ballast water treatment on ship machinery technology and operations. Results show that technologies such as filtration, UV disinfection and electrochlorination effectively meet environmental standards, but increase energy consumption by up to 10% and require complex integration with ship systems. These regulations also affect operational procedures, maintenance frequency, and crew training, adding to the operational burden. This study offers recommendations to improve efficiency and compliance with IMO standards.

Abstract

Watugong Village, located in Alok Timur District, Sikka Regency, is a traditional agricultural area where maize serves as both a staple crop and an integral part of local cultural heritage. However, post-harvest processing—particularly the shelling of maize kernels from the cob—is still conducted manually, leading to inefficiency and reduced grain quality. Attempts at mechanization through modern machines have often proven unsuitable due to their high cost, complexity, and incompatibility with the needs of small-scale farmers. To address this issue, the Mechanical Engineering Department of Politeknik Cristo Re developed a 20 kg-capacity maize shelling machine that is ergonomic, affordable, and easy to operate. Powered by a 0.75 kW electric motor, the machine employs a transmission system comprising pulleys, V-belts, and a silent chain, enabling it to increase shelling efficiency by more than 4.5 times compared to manual methods. Performance tests show a shelling capacity of up to 400 kg/hour with minimal kernel damage. The novelty of this machine lies in its participatory design approach and use of locally available materials and components. This innovation serves as a tangible example of appropriate technology grounded in local wisdom, supporting improved productivity, farmer self-reliance, and sustainable food security in rural communities.

Abstract

The seawater pump is a vital component of a ship’s cooling system, functioning to circulate seawater as the primary cooling medium for the main engine and generators. One of its main parts, the impeller, operates continuously in direct contact with seawater and is therefore highly susceptible to damage caused by corrosion, cavitation, and material wear. This study aims to analyze the causes of pressure reduction in seawater pumps, identify damages to centrifugal pump impellers, and determine the factors contributing to the reduced suction capacity of seawater pumps on board KM. Sabuk Nusantara 101. The research applied a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, combining direct observation, interviews with engine crew, documentation, and literature review. The study was conducted during the voyage of KM. Sabuk Nusantara 101 from April 28 to May 10, 2025, covering the route from Kupang through Atapupu, Maritaeng, Kalabahi, Baranusa, Balauring, Lewoleba, Waiwerang, Larantuka, to Maumere. Data were analyzed by comparing the actual pump condition with the standard operating parameters of the ship’s cooling system. The results revealed that the reduction in pump pressure (0.14 MPa compared to the standard 0.2–0.4 MPa) was caused by impeller damage, blockage in the suction line, and pipe leakage. The examined impeller showed severe damage, including corrosion, broken vanes, and increased clearance between the impeller and casing. These conditions led to a significant decrease in pump efficiency and suction performance. Other contributing factors were air leakage in the suction line, biofouling at the seawater intake, and insufficient routine maintenance. In conclusion, impeller failure and system leakage are the primary factors reducing the performance of seawater pumps in the ship’s cooling system. Preventive maintenance such as regular sea chest cleaning, impeller inspection, replacement of worn components, and ensuring airtight suction lines is essential. These efforts are crucial to maintaining the reliability of the cooling system, preventing engine overheating, and ensuring the safety of ship operations.

Abstract

This research analyzes the effect of three oil brands, namely MPX1, Federal Ultratec, and Enduro 4T on engine operating temperature and fuel consumption on the Honda Revo Fit 110 cc PGM-FI motorbike. The test was carried out at an engine speed of 17,000 rpm for 30 minutes using Pertalite fuel. The parameters observed include engine temperature and remaining fuel volume. The results show that the type of oil influences thermal performance and fuel efficiency. MPX1 oil produces the highest temperature of 111°C with the most economical fuel consumption (968 ml remaining). The Federal Ultratec showed a temperature of 109°C with 900 ml remaining, while the Enduro 4T had a low of 107°C with 880 ml remaining. MPX1 with the semi-synthetic SAE 10W-30 formulation has better viscosity stability than the other two mineral oils, so it is able to maintain combustion efficiency and engine performance. Overall, the MPX1 provides the most optimal performance, the Federal Ultratec excels in engine protection at high loads, and the Enduro 4T is better in lowering operating temperatures. Choosing oil that matches engine specifications is an important factor in maintaining fuel efficiency and engine durability.
