Abstract

Limestone mining in Flores has had significant impacts on the environment and local communities. Communities face a variety of challenges, including ecosystem damage, changes in soil quality, and socio-economic impacts. This paper aims to explore the adaptation strategies implemented by the Flores community in dealing with environmental changes due to mining activities. Through a qualitative approach and secondary data analysis, this study identifies various adaptation strategies, ranging from sustainable natural resource management to strengthening community capacity in dealing with mining impacts. The results show that although communities have adopted several adaptation strategies, there are still major challenges that must be overcome to achieve environmental and social sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perception of local workers towards the implementation of K3 (Occupational Safety and Health) standards in construction projects taking place in Belu Regency. With the increasing construction activities in this area, it is important to understand how local workers view and respond to the implementation of K3 standards, which play an important role in maintaining their safety and health in the workplace. The methodology used in this study was a survey with a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents working in various construction projects in Belu Regency. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods to provide a clear picture of the perceptions of local workers. The results of the study indicate that although most local workers are aware of the importance of implementing K3 standards, there are still challenges in its implementation, such as lack of training, adequate facilities, and in-depth understanding of K3 procedures. This study also identified several cases of work accidents that occurred due to non-compliance with K3 standards, which emphasizes the need to increase awareness and training for local workers. Thus, the results of this study are expected to provide recommendations for stakeholders in improving the implementation of K3 standards in construction projects in Belu Regency.

Abstract

This study explores how different types of damping systems affect vibration and noise levels in ship engines. The main goal is to assess the effectiveness of each damping system in reducing vibrations and noise, and to determine which system performs best in improving comfort and reliability. The approach combines direct experiments and literature review. Three damping types were tested: passive elastomer dampers, semi-active magnetorheological (MR) dampers, and fully active systems controlled by sensors and actuators. Results show that active systems are the most effective in reducing both low- and mid-frequency vibrations and noise. MR dampers perform well under variable load conditions, while passive systems are suitable for more stable operations. These findings offer a practical reference for selecting the right damping system tailored to a ship's operational needs.

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of the implementation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations regarding ballast water treatment on ship machinery technology and operations. Results show that technologies such as filtration, UV disinfection and electrochlorination effectively meet environmental standards, but increase energy consumption by up to 10% and require complex integration with ship systems. These regulations also affect operational procedures, maintenance frequency, and crew training, adding to the operational burden. This study offers recommendations to improve efficiency and compliance with IMO standards.

Abstract

Noise and vibration occurring in the ship's engine room can significantly impact the crew's health and the passengers' comfort. This study aims to analyze the level of noise and vibration on a research vessel powered by an electric motor. The method used includes measuring noise and vibration with specialized tools to evaluate the impact on health. The results show that the average noise level reaches 102.7 dB, exceeding the established threshold of 85 dB. Therefore, using ear protection devices (APD) is highly recommended to reduce health risks. Although the noise on the vessel does not necessarily make it unpopular, it is essential to further investigate the impact of noise and vibration felt by engine operators over a long period, as it can affect their health. This research is necessary to minimize the noise level on ships through understanding the characteristics of noise itself. Excessive noise levels can have serious negative impacts, both in terms of health, psychological, and technical aspects.

Abstract

The ship's machinery system has a central role in supporting shipping operations, both in terms of transporting logistics and passenger transportation services.Although designed with high accuracy standards to ensure maximum and optimal performance, this system is still at risk of technical problems, one of which is excessive vibration and noise. This kind of condition not only has an impact on the comfort and safety of the ship's crew, but can also be an early signal of potential damage to engine components. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of excessive vibration on damage that occurs to bearing and shaft components in ship engine systems. The study was conducted through a case study approach on a ship engine unit that showed abnormal symptoms in the form of increased vibration levels. By conducting vibration measurements, visual inspection, and component condition analysis, it was found that bearing wear and shaft misalignment were the main causes of the disturbance. The evaluation results revealed that component imbalance and errors in the installation process were the main triggering factors for the increase in vibration levels, even exceeding the recommended threshold. This had a direct impact on the engine's operating temperature, decreased efficiency, and risked overall system damage. These findings emphasize the importance of regular vibration monitoring and the implementation of preventive maintenance to avoid more  serious damage to the ship's machinery system.

Abstract

Noise is an unwanted sound, which comes from human activities or nature, and at certain levels and durations can have a negative impact on human comfort and health. On board a ship, the engine room is the main source of noise. High noise intensity and often not realized can cause serious disturbances to the crew (ABK) and cause discomfort to passengers. Therefore, soundproof efforts are needed to create a healthier and more comfortable working and traveling environment.

Abstract

The working environment on board a ship, especially in the engine room, has high levels of noise and vibration due to the operation of the main and supporting engines. Exposure to noise and vibration in the ship's engine room is a significant risk factor for the health of the crew, which can cause hearing loss, musculoskeletal disorders, work stress, and decreased productivity. The study was conducted by collecting data on noise levels (using a sound level meter) and vibration (using a vibration meter) in the area. Exposure to noise and vibration in the ship's environment is a serious threat to the health of the crew that requires a comprehensive K3 approach. The noise in the engine room is above the NAB, which is 85 dB, so PPE is needed to reduce the noise level. The combination of engineering, exposure management, and proper use of PPE (ersonal protective equipment) has been shown to reduce health risks by up to 60% based on selected studies.
