Abstract

Fulfilling students' needs in learning is a major factor in the educational process. However, there are still many misconceptions about the application of Merdeka Curriculum among teachers, resulting in the goal of competence in the Pancasila Student Profile not being achieved. Project-based learning is applied as an effort to provide different treatment to each student who has different characteristics and needs. The diversity of Batang Regency's local wisdom and local cultures that are starting to become extinct is a potential that should be preserved. The purpose of this study is to analyze local wisdom-based differentiation learning applied by high school and vocational school teachers in Batang Regency in the Merdeka Curriculum. This research is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach where data collection uses questionnaires, interviews and observations with 20 teachers; the collected data is analysed by grouping according to the level and target competencies. Based on the results of the study, the dimensions of independence, critical reasoning and creativity are the 3 main characters that are reflected in every P5 lesson conducted by English teachers in Batang district.

Abstract

The rapid transition to distance education, prompted by the global COVID-19 outbreak, has compelled educators to integrate CALL/MALL. Within the context of remote learning, this study examines Quizlet, a digital platform used for learning through flashcards, to determine its instructional advantages and limitations in facilitating the acquisition of vocabulary for EFL students. The study employed a case study of 47 Indonesian high school students participating in an English extracurricular club using two surveys and in-depth interviews to acquire insights about students' attitudes and experiences with Quizlet. Ten sets of flashcards covering fundamental and common words were used for a full semester of remote instruction. The findings indicate that Quizlet contributed positively to vocabulary acquisition. Students performed satisfaction in its various features, user-friendly interface, ease of memorization, accessibility, and motivational aspects of Quizlet. Despite the challenges encountered in terms of connectivity with the live quiz function, alternative methods such as self-tests were utilized. The investigation demonstrates that Quizlet's multimodal learning experience enhances the learning of EFL vocabulary. Nevertheless, the limitations linked to internet connectivity necessitate careful consideration. It underscores the importance of educators addressing potential hindrances, particularly those pertaining to the internet, in order to achieve successful remote teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to explore pre-service teachers' first-time experience in lesson planning from their pedagogical and content knowledge perspectives. The study involved four pre-service teachers as participants in a micro-teaching class to answer two theme questions, namely Pedagogic knowledge pre-service students during micro teaching practice and Content knowledge pre-service students during micro teaching practice. This research used interview study as the research design. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed using thematic analysis. Pre-service teachers shares experiences in implementing their pedagogical and content knowledge into teaching modules in order to create the effective classroom process. Lecturer’s feedback and pre-service teacher reflection after micro teaching practice play a significant role in improving their teaching practices

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum, introduced as a replacement for the 2013 Curriculum, is a recent educational framework widely adopted in Indonesia with the overarching goal of enhancing the quality of learning implementation in the country. Given that teachers play a pivotal role in any curriculum by designing learning experiences and engaging directly with students, this research aims to explore teachers' perceptions of the Merdeka Curriculum, specifically examining the challenges and benefits associated with this new educational framework in Indonesia. Employing a systematic literature review as the research method, the findings indicate that, on the whole, teachers maintain a positive outlook on the Merdeka Curriculum, recognizing its potential to elevate the quality of learning. However, when delving into teacher readiness concerning the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum spanning areas like planning, executing learning activities, and conducting assessments it is revealed that teacher perceptions are currently deemed only sufficient. This underscores the need for additional training to enhance teachers' knowledge and skills in effectively implementing the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This paper studies the translation quality of phrasal verbs generated by Auris AI in the Cartoon Scary Girl (2023) from the terms of accuracy, acceptability and readability. The aforementioned techniques are then applied to translation and the quality of a translated text measured using Nababan's framework. The researcher listed phrasal verbs systematically into a table, which was analysed according to the guidelines given in Spradley theory. As a result, despite Auris AI's claims of achieving up to 99% accuracy with high-quality transcriptions, the study found that the overall translation quality was medium with the average score is 2,24 out of 3,00 or 74,6%. It shows that Auris AI's high claim for translation accuracy is really just a kind of image appealing to the customers. The assessment incorporated three terms: accuracy, which scored 2.25 or 75%; acceptability, which also scored 2.25 or 75%; and readability, which scored 2.24 or 74.6%. These results showed that the translations often do not convey the intended meaning, lack naturalness, and have only a moderate level of clarity and comprehensibility.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate two main questions: first, whether there exists a correlation between the extensive use of self-regulated reading and the reading proficiency of aspiring English teachers, particularly in digital text comprehension; second, which specific components of self-regulated reading are predominantly employed by these preservice English teachers. The research adopts a quantitative approach, employing a correlational study design, with 37 sixth-semester students in English language education as participants. Data collection involves using a questionnaire and gathering participants' reading scores. The analysis is conducted using correlation and descriptive statistics in Microsoft Excel. Results indicate a weak negative correlation of -0.02116, suggesting a discrepancy between student's reading abilities and their reported self-regulated reading habits in online texts. In conclusion, there is a minimal negative association between students' reading proficiency and online reading proficiency. Future research should delve deeper into this relationship, incorporating specific assessments of online reading proficiency. Furthermore, researchers can also consider additional variables, such as students' level of technological skills or preferences for digital learning, to enrich the understanding of the dynamics of the interaction between reading ability and self-regulated reading in the context of online text.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of digital media, particularly AI Fully-Fluent and Instagram, on enhancing Speaking skills for tourism in the English Education program at Universitas Sulawesi Barat. Recognizing the crucial role of English proficiency in maximizing tourism potential, especially in culturally rich regions like Majene, this research addresses the need to improve human resource competencies. The study employs descriptive quantitative approach from applied linguistic perspective, with a sample of 25 students selected through convenience sampling. Data collection involved tests to assess the improvement in Speaking ability after the application of digital media, paired sample t-test with SPSS was utilized in data analysis. Findings reveal positive impact of digital media, with a two-tailed significance value of less than 0.05. Comprehension showed highest improvement, followed by pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Interactive features of AI Fully-Fluent and Instagram provide a supportive environment for students to practice English, build confidence, and engage in meaningful language use, aligning with interactionist theory in linguistics, which emphasizes the importance of interaction, feedback, and practice in linguistic acquisition. The study offers insightful perspective into the role of digital media in enhancing language learning and tourism, with implications for developing human resources and promoting Majene as tourist destination.

Abstract

One of the reasons why students faced some problems and pressures in English writing is some anxieties in the learning process. They need to build self-efficacy to be able to involve their confidence in writing achievement. Teachers should to understand the students’ condition in their self-efficacy before the teaching learning process. This research described the condition of the students’ self-efficacy at twelve grades in Senior High School. A qualitative method by using case study design was used. Using the purposive sampling, 25 students were given self-efficacy open ended questionnaire. Adopting from Bandura’s theory, the result of described students at 12 grades have quite high self-efficacy indicated by their magnitude, generality and strength in writing performance. Magnitude dimension showed the students’ beliefs in passing some difficulties in writing assignment. In Generality dimension, some of the students believe they understand all of the material in writing and affected by their interest. In strength dimension showed all students’ strength by having motivation when students are in failure in writing performance. The present study is an important step in teaching ability to understand students’ self-efficacy for teacher success in their teaching process.
