Abstract

This study explores the representation of Gus Miftah’s da’wah in digital media using an interdisciplinary framework that combines Self-Presentation Theory (Jones & Pittman), Islamic principles of religious moderation (wasathiyah), and the Social Construction of Reality theory (Berger & Luckmann). Gus Miftah is a contemporary cleric from Nahdlatul Ulama, widely known for his unconventional preaching approach, including outreach in nightclubs, marginalized communities, and on social media platforms. Through analysis of his Instagram account (@gusmiftah), YouTube sermon content, and public reactions via comment sections, the study finds that Gus Miftah actively constructs his public persona using exemplification, self-promotion, and ingratiation strategies. His message promotes tolerance, national unity, and interfaith dialogue, aligning with moderate Islamic values—yet it also generates controversy over the ethics and limits of religious communication. The study also reveals that public religious authority in the digital era is shaped through the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization, as seen in social media interactions. Ultimately, this research concludes that digital media is not merely a da’wah platform, but a dynamic discursive arena that redefines religious narratives, clerical legitimacy, and socio-religious engagement in an increasingly plural and connected society.

Abstract

The phenomenon of awarding the title “Haji” to Thariq Halilintar—who was said to have performed the Hajj pilgrimage at only two months old—sparked widespread controversy in Indonesia’s digital public sphere. This study aims to analyze how the media framed the event, how Islamic jurisprudence views Hajj performed by minors, and how the social meaning of the “Haji” title is constructed and interpreted by society. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and critical discourse analysis, data were collected from online news outlets (DetikHikmah, Suara.com, Kumparan), YouTube content from the Gen Halilintar family, and public comments on social media. Theoretical frameworks include communication theories (framing and agenda setting), Islamic thought (maqasid al-shariah and fiqh of worship), and social theory (symbolic interactionism). The findings reveal that the media framed the issue as a religious entertainment controversy, shaping public perception beyond factual reporting. From an Islamic legal perspective, Hajj performed by a child is valid but does not fulfill the obligation in adulthood, and the “Haji” title is more of a cultural symbol than a formal religious designation. Public responses indicate that the title has become performative, with netizens debating its authenticity and purpose. The study concludes that digital platforms have become a new arena for the contestation of religious symbols, blurring the boundaries between the sacred and the profane in contemporary Muslim society

Abstract

This research focuses on explaining how Indonesia's efforts to implement gastrodiplomacy towards China, especially through the Indonesia Spice Up The World program which took place in 2021-2024. Indonesia is a country rich in spices, so it has a diverse and rich cuisine. Although the relationship between Indonesia and China was once frozen, today the relationship between the two countries has developed and improved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. China is known to be the first position country with the largest export value in Indonesia's export destination countries in the category of medicinal plants, aromatics, and spices in 2022. This research was conducted qualitatively with primary data collection techniques obtained through interviews with representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as secondary data obtained through books, theses, journal articles, and news. This research uses the concepts of public diplomacy and gastrodiplomacy. This research found that Indonesia has made various gastrodiplomacy efforts including through the Indonesia Spice Up The World program conducted towards various countries including China. The program has not been able to achieve its targets due to various challenges and obstacles, especially in financing. In addition, until now the Indonesian government has not had a gastrodiplomacy program designed specifically for China alone.
