Abstract

This study aims to improve the retelling skills of fable stories among fifth-grade students through the implementation of the paired storytelling technique and hand puppet media. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), involving 20 fifth-grade students in the 2022/2023 academic year. The study was conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of two meetings. Data were collected through observation and performance tests, then analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that only 9 students were able to effectively retell the fable stories they heard or read according to the competencies, while the other 11 students required guidance. The application of paired storytelling techniques and the use of hand puppet media proved effective in improving the retelling skills of most students.

Abstract

Indonesian language is the foundation of various other fields of knowledge, with one of its branches being reading skills. However, students often face difficulties in learning to read and frequently lack suitable educational media to meet their needs. Therefore, concrete media in the form of picture-word cards is expected to clearly convey the material, be easy to use, and be engaging for elementary school/MI students. This study aims to assess the need for picture-word card media, describe the steps in developing picture-word card media for reading materials, and evaluate the validity and practicality of the picture-word card media developed for grade I students at MI Muhammadiyah Lasusua. The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach, utilizing the ASSURE model with steps including Analyze Learner, State Performance Objective, Select Methods, Media, and Materials, Utilize Media and Materials, Require Learner Participation, and Evaluate and Revise. The results indicate that the development of picture-word card media began with research and initial information gathering through curriculum analysis and student needs assessment. The validity of the picture-word card media was positively rated, with design experts giving a score of 68.75% in the valid category, and content experts also rating 68.75% in the valid category. The practicality test yielded very satisfying results, with an overall score of 85.43% from 26 students and 94.23% from one grade I teacher, both falling into the very practical category.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effects of mixed language use among elementary school students. Utilizing a descriptive method and a qualitative approach, the research employed observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection instruments. The subjects of the study were fourth-grade students at SDN Buntu Sarek, Latimojong Subdistrict, Luwu Regency. The results revealed that the use of Luwu-Indonesian language among elementary school students exhibits complex dynamics. In formal learning interactions within the classroom, students tend to use Indonesian more frequently. Conversely, outside the classroom, Luwu dominates informal social interactions. This pattern reflects students' adaptation to various communication contexts, with environmental factors such as family, peers, and media playing significant roles in shaping their speech patterns. Families that actively use the Luwu language support the maintenance of cultural identity, while interactions with peers and media influence the use of Indonesian in informal settings. The use of mixed languages has positive impacts, enriching students' language skills by expanding their vocabulary through the ability to switch between Luwu and Indonesian. However, challenges arise in mastering either language deeply and in potential cultural identity conflicts due to exposure to formal Indonesian. Therefore, educational strategies that support understanding and developing language skills in both languages are necessary to address these challenges in Indonesian language learning at the elementary school level.
