Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the perceptions of 25 English for Tourism Industry students at the State Polytechnic of Malang on using ChatGPT as a speaking partner in tour guide role-plays. The research aimed to evaluate its effectiveness in improving fluency, vocabulary, and confidence, while noting challenges such as speech recognition errors, limited response variety, and technical issues. Data were gathered through Likert-scale questionnaires and open-ended responses and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that students valued ChatGPT for vocabulary enrichment and fluency practice, though it was seen as a complement rather than a substitute for human interaction. The study highlighted the potential of integrating AI into Tourism English curricula while calling for enhanced feedback and conversational realism.

Abstract

This research focuses on annotated translation, which involves translating with commentaries. The study examines No Rules Rules: Netflix And Culture of Reinvention (2020), specifically Chapters 1 and 2, using Newmark and Chesterman's translation theories. The researcher identified translation challenges and provided solutions through introspective and retrospective methods. Three main problem categories were found: understanding (16 cases), transfer (9 cases), and a combination of both (15 cases), totaling 40 annotated items.  To overcome these difficulties, the researcher applied various translation strategies, including literal translation, synonymy, cultural filtering, free translation, idiomatic translation, loan/calque, paraphrase, cultural equivalence, functional equivalence, and contextual equivalence. Multiple online dictionaries (Merriam Webster, Oxford, Longman, Cambridge, Britannica, Urban Dictionary, and Collins), relevant websites, and previous studies were also used to support the translation analysis. Keywords: translation, annotated translation, business book, strategies

Abstract

This study analyzes the 1995 film Clueless through Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, which views gender as a construct shaped by societal expectations and repetitive actions. Using qualitative analysis, the research highlights how the film critiques traditional gender norms through its characters. Cher’s hyperfemininity both adheres to and challenges societal expectations, Tai’s fashion-driven transformation reflects identity fluidity, and Christian’s ambiguous masculinity subverts conventional norms. Additionally, humor in the film critiques class and gender constructs. The study situates Clueless within feminist and demonstrating how it portrays gender as dynamic and open to reinterpretation.

Abstract

This study analyzed the errors demonstrated by students in a consecutive interpreting course at the Master’s Program in Linguistics at Universitas Brawijaya, explaining common issues and suggesting ways to promote better training. We adopted a qualitative approach that involved an analysis of 28 utterances from recorded videos of interpreting practice. The results indicated that 18 errors occurred in four main categories: inadequate language proficiency, distortion, omission, and non-conservation of paralinguistic elements. No literal translation errors were observed, indicating that the training was probably biased toward positive learning of the translation of context. However, the frequent errors made by the student interpreter showed that training is needed to overcome these issues. The recommendations include focusing on vocabulary development, practices that develop real-time usage and speech fluency, and cognitive load and/or anxiety training. These findings can be useful for future research in consecutive interpreting error analysis and in designing comprehensive training frameworks toward professionalism among novice interpreters.

Abstract

In preparing vocational students for successful entry into the professional business environment, the development of pragmatic competence, particularly in the use of appropriate language styles across varied business contexts, is essential. This study examines the film The Founder as a medium for analyzing language style usage within diverse business interactions. The objectives of the study are twofold: (1) to classify business situations based on the language styles employed, and (2) to identify and analyze the factors influencing language style selection in specific business contexts. The findings are presented through a series of infographics, systematically illustrating the application of language styles across both formal and informal business activities. These infographics are designed as pedagogical resources for students of the D4 English for Business and Professional Communication program, offering authentic representations of language use in real-world business scenarios. By engaging with these materials, students are expected to enhance their communicative competence and develop the ability to select appropriate language styles in professional settings.
