Abstract

This study investigates semantic shifts in contemporary Indonesian as observed in social media platforms. With the rapid growth of digital communication, language use has become increasingly dynamic, leading to notable changes in word meanings. The research aims to identify common lexical items that have undergone semantic change, classify the types of shifts (e.g., broadening, narrowing, amelioration, pejoration, and metaphorical extension), and analyze the sociolinguistic factors influencing these changes. Data were collected from Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok through purposive sampling of posts from 2020 to 2024. Qualitative analysis was conducted using a descriptive-semantic approach. The findings reveal that semantic change in Indonesian on social media is driven by youth subcultures, pop culture references, meme culture, and the need for concise and expressive communication. This study contributes to the understanding of contemporary language dynamics and highlights the role of social media as a catalyst for linguistic innovation in Indonesian.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of regional language interference on the sentence structure of the Indonesian language. Language interference, particularly from regional or local languages, is a common phenomenon in multilingual societies such as Indonesia. The research aims to identify patterns of syntactic interference that emerge when speakers use Indonesian influenced by their native regional languages. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, written texts, and recordings of daily conversations among bilingual speakers. The findings reveal that interference occurs in several aspects of sentence structure, including word order, subject-predicate agreement, and the use of conjunctions. Such interference can lead to deviations from standard Indonesian grammar, potentially affecting clarity and mutual understanding. This study highlights the need for increased awareness in both educational and communicative contexts to promote the correct use of standard Indonesian while respecting linguistic diversity.

Abstract

Language education in secondary schools often focuses on grammar and vocabulary, frequently neglecting the social contexts in which language is used. Sociolinguistics, as a discipline that examines language within its social context, offers a powerful framework for enriching language learning. This paper explores the application of a sociolinguistic approach to language instruction in Indonesian secondary schools. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method supported by literature review and classroom observations, the study identifies various classroom strategies such as role-play, real-life simulations, and community-based language projects that align with sociolinguistic principles. Findings reveal that incorporating sociolinguistic elements into language teaching improves students’ communicative competence, especially in terms of pragmatic awareness and adaptability in diverse social interactions. Students also demonstrated increased motivation and engagement when learning was connected to their real-life experiences. The study concludes that a sociolinguistic approach not only enhances linguistic proficiency but also cultivates learners’ sociocultural awareness, preparing them for effective communication in a multilingual and multicultural society.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed the landscape of language education, including the teaching of Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA). This study explores the effectiveness of digital media in facilitating the acquisition of the Indonesian language by foreign learners. The purpose of this research is to investigate how digital platforms—such as learning management systems, mobile applications, video conferencing tools, and interactive content—enhance the linguistic and communicative competence of BIPA students. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using literature review as the main approach to synthesize findings from previous studies. Data were collected from scholarly articles, academic books, and reports relevant to the topic. The findings indicate that the use of digital media significantly improves student engagement, motivation, and understanding of linguistic structures and sociocultural contexts. Moreover, digital tools allow for more personalized learning experiences and real-time interaction with native speakers. However, the study also identifies challenges such as digital literacy gaps, infrastructure limitations, and the risk of cultural disconnection. In conclusion, digital media, when effectively integrated, can serve as a powerful means to enhance BIPA instruction, provided it is supported by pedagogical strategies and adequate teacher training.

Abstract

Language plays a fundamental role in shaping students' character, particularly at the primary education level where moral and social values begin to form. This study explores how language is used as a medium for character education at SDN 2 Berangah, focusing on everyday interactions between teachers and students, classroom discourse, and school programs that integrate character-building values. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that language is not only a tool for communication but also a key instrument in instilling values such as honesty, respect, responsibility, and cooperation. Teachers consciously use positive and directive language to model good behavior and reinforce desirable attitudes. Additionally, structured language-based activities such as storytelling, reflective dialogue, and moral-themed discussions are found to significantly contribute to students’ moral development. The study concludes that a strategic and consistent use of language within the school environment plays a critical role in developing the students’ character, and suggests that language-focused character education should be strengthened across all subjects and learning contexts.

Abstract

Language use is deeply rooted in its social context, where syntactic and semantic choices reflect both situational formality and communicative intent. This article explores how syntactic and semantic patterns differ between formal and nonformal varieties of Indonesian language, focusing on implications for language learning and teaching. The study aims to investigate how sociolinguistic approaches—particularly those emphasizing communicative competence—can be integrated into secondary school language instruction to enhance students’ pragmatic and sociocultural awareness. Using a qualitative descriptive method and literature review approach, data were collected from scholarly sources such as journals, books, and conference proceedings available through platforms like Google Scholar. Thematic content analysis was used to identify patterns and key findings. The results indicate that practical classroom strategies—such as authentic discourse analysis, role-playing, and language variation discussions—can significantly improve students’ understanding of language register, politeness strategies, and contextual appropriateness. This, in turn, enhances their pragmatic competence and social adaptability. The paper highlights the value of sociolinguistic frameworks as a bridge between linguistic knowledge and real-world communication skills, calling for curriculum reforms and teacher training to better address these dimensions.

Abstract

Background: Language acts as a vessel of cultural heritage, reflecting the values, history, and identity of communities. Regional languages in Indonesia are under threat due to language shift toward national or global languages. Sociolinguistic awareness is essential to preserve intangible cultural heritage. Purpose: This literature review aims to examine how sociolinguistic approaches in language education—particularly in teaching regional Indonesian languages—can enhance student communicative competence while preserving cultural identity. Methods: A descriptive‑qualitative methodology was employed. Using a literature review approach, academic documents (journals, books, proceedings) from sources such as Google Scholar were identified and analyzed. Thematic content analysis was used to extract key patterns, concepts, and findings. Main Findings: Implementation strategies include authentic discourse analysis, role‑play simulations, and discussions of language variation. These practices help learners appreciate register differences, politeness norms, and contextual language use. Students who engage in these activities exhibit improved pragmatic and sociocultural competence. They also develop greater awareness of linguistic variation and cultural norms. Conclusion: The study underscores the critical role of sociolinguistics as a bridge between linguistic knowledge and real‑world communicative ability. Integrating sociolinguistic principles into language teaching supports both heritage language preservation and the development of communicative competence.

Abstract

This study explores the structural differences between Indonesian and English within the framework of applied linguistics. The research aims to analyze the syntactic, morphological, and semantic aspects that distinguish the two languages, considering their implications for language learning and translation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study draws on secondary data from linguistic corpora, previous studies, and relevant linguistic theories. The results indicate that Indonesian, as an agglutinative language, relies heavily on affixation to form words, while English tends to use auxiliary verbs and word order to convey grammatical relationships. Syntactically, English follows a strict Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order, whereas Indonesian allows more flexibility depending on discourse context. Semantic analysis shows that English emphasizes tense and aspect, while Indonesian highlights aspect and context-based meaning. These findings contribute to applied linguistics by providing practical insights for second language acquisition, translation studies, and cross-cultural communication. The study concludes that a deeper understanding of structural differences can enhance language pedagogy and facilitate more effective translation practices.

Abstract

Background: Regional languages across the Indonesian archipelago embody rich cultural knowledge and heritage, serving as living repositories of local traditions, values, and expressions. However, globalization and the dominance of national and global languages often marginalize these linguistic treasures, risking cultural erosion. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate how the integration of regional languages in educational settings—through a sociolinguistic approach—can bolster communicative competence while fostering cultural preservation. Specifically, it explores how regional language instruction enriches students’ grasp of variation, register, politeness, and pragmatic adaptation. Methods: Employing a descriptive qualitative design through literature review, the study involves systematic document analysis of academic sources—journal articles, books, and proceedings indexed in databases such as Google Scholar. Data collection targets theoretical frameworks, empirical findings, and pedagogical models pertaining to sociolinguistic language instruction, diverse linguistic registers, and pragmatic competence. Thematic content analysis is applied to identify recurring patterns, concepts, and insights. Key Findings: Implementation strategies include authentic discourse analysis, role-play simulations, and discussions around language variation in both formal and informal contexts. These methods enhance students’ understanding of linguistic variation, register sensitivity, and context-appropriate usage. They further promote pragmatic and sociocultural competence, empowering students to adjust their language use across different social situations. Conclusion: Sociolinguistic instruction serves as a vital bridge between linguistic knowledge and real-world communicative practice. Embedding regional languages into language education not only supports cultural continuity but also equips learners with the skills required for effective, context-sensitive communication in today’s diverse interactional landscape.

Abstract

Language plays a central role in shaping identity, preserving cultural heritage, and facilitating communication across generations. In the era of globalization, local wisdom values embedded in traditional languages are increasingly threatened by the dominance of global languages and modern communication styles. This article aims to explore how language can function as a medium for preserving local wisdom while simultaneously supporting communicative competence in real-life contexts. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive method with a literature review approach. Data collection was carried out through document analysis of academic sources such as journal articles, books, and conference proceedings obtained from Google Scholar. Thematic content analysis was used to identify recurring themes, concepts, and key findings. The main findings indicate that sociolinguistic approaches, such as authentic discourse analysis, role-play simulations, and discussions on language variation, can effectively integrate local cultural values into language learning. These strategies enhance students’ awareness of registers, politeness norms, and context-based language use. Moreover, students develop pragmatic and sociocultural competence, including greater empathy, adaptability, and confidence in communication. This study highlights the importance of viewing language not only as a linguistic system but also as a cultural tool to bridge local traditions and global challenges. In conclusion, sociolinguistic perspectives serve as a bridge between linguistic knowledge and practical communication skills, emphasizing the role of language in preserving local wisdom and preparing students to navigate real-world communicative demands.
