Abstract

This study provides a comparative analysis of the Indonesian and Korean address systems, aiming to identify their linguistic structures, socio-pragmatic functions, and cultural foundations. The research specifically investigates how address terms encode politeness, hierarchy, and interpersonal relations in both languages. Using a qualitative-comparative method, data were collected from natural Indonesian conversations and semi‑structured interviews in Bali, while Korean data were derived from published sociolinguistic studies and interviews with Korean language instructors. The analysis reveals that Indonesian predominantly employs flexible lexical address forms-such as Pak, Bu, Mas, and Mbak-that reflect solidarity and contextual negotiation, while Korean relies on a highly structured honorific system rooted in age, hierarchy, and Confucian values. The findings contribute theoretically to contrastive pragmatics and culturally embedded politeness systems, and practically to intercultural communication and language teaching. The study recommends future quantitative research on generational shifts and register‑based address usage.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed foreign language learning in secondary education. Language learning applications are increasingly used to enhance student engagement and learning motivation. This study aims to examine the effect of language learning applications on foreign language learning motivation among students of SMA Negeri 1 Mataram. The research employed a quantitative approach using an explanatory survey design. The sample consisted of 120 eleventh-grade students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire measuring learning motivation. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression. The results indicate that the use of language learning applications has a positive and significant effect on students’ foreign language learning motivation. Applications featuring gamification, immediate feedback, and autonomous learning significantly enhance both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These findings support established theories of language learning motivation and are consistent with previous studies on technology-enhanced language learning. The study recommends the systematic integration of language learning applications into foreign language instruction at the senior high school level.

Abstract

The shift in the use of local languages among the younger generation has become an increasingly pressing sociolinguistic issue in the context of cultural preservation. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the decline in local language usage and identify emerging linguistic patterns among youth in urban and semi-urban environments. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through interviews, observations, and questionnaire surveys involving 75 respondents aged 15–25 years in three major cities in Indonesia. The findings reveal that the shift is primarily driven by modernization, the dominance of Indonesian and foreign languages in digital media, and limited intergenerational transmission within families. Moreover, local languages are increasingly confined to specific cultural or ceremonial contexts, with daily communication dominated by Indonesian and mixed codes. The study concludes that revitalization efforts require collaborative action between families, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. Strengthening local-language-based learning, increasing media exposure, and promoting positive linguistic attitudes are essential strategies to preserve intergenerational language continuity.

Abstract

This study investigates how language functions as a medium of power representation within political texts through the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Political discourse often embeds ideological structures that influence public perception, construct dominance, and legitimize authority. The purpose of this research is to analyze linguistic features and discursive strategies used in selected political speeches to uncover implicit power relations. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design, this study adopts Fairclough’s three-dimensional CDA framework, focusing on textual analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural context. Data were collected from three political speeches delivered during national political events in Indonesia and were analyzed through coding, thematic classification, and interpretive discourse analysis. Findings indicate that lexical choices, modality, metaphors, and intertextuality are strategically employed to naturalize political ideologies, strengthen authority, and shape collective identities. The study concludes that political texts do not merely communicate information but actively construct and maintain power structures. These findings highlight the importance of CDA in fostering critical awareness of language use in political communication and encourage further research on multimodal political discourse.

Abstract

Foreign language proficiency has become a crucial competence for students in the context of globalization and educational competitiveness. This study aims to examine the influence of foreign language skills on students’ academic and non-academic achievement. A quantitative correlational research design was employed involving 180 senior high school students selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using standardized foreign language proficiency tests, academic achievement records, and questionnaires measuring non-academic achievement, including participation in competitions, leadership activities, and extracurricular involvement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between foreign language proficiency and academic achievement (r = 0.62, p < 0.01) as well as non-academic achievement (r = 0.58, p < 0.01). Regression analysis shows that foreign language proficiency significantly predicts both academic and non-academic outcomes. These findings suggest that students with higher foreign language competence tend to demonstrate better academic performance and greater engagement in non-academic activities. The study concludes that strengthening foreign language education can contribute to holistic student development. The results provide empirical evidence for policymakers and educators to integrate foreign language learning as a strategic component in improving educational quality.
