Abstract

Durian is a high-value tropical fruit with increasing market demand, yet productivity in smallholder farms often remains suboptimal due to conventional cultivation practices. This study analyzes the implementation of a sustainable durian cultivation system at Agro Plalangan, Semarang, and its impact on plant productivity, soil fertility, and ecosystem resilience. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with eight purposively selected informants, and documentation. The findings reveal that the applied cultivation practices emphasize resource efficiency and sustainability principles through balanced use of organic and inorganic fertilizers, drip irrigation, and eco-friendly pest and weed management without synthetic chemicals. The avoidance of chemical fruit stimulants helps maintain plant physiological health and extend productive lifespan. A gradual three-year transition from conventional to organic farming successfully improved soil structure and enhanced plant resistance to extreme weather variations. Moreover, the adoption of multiple durian varieties such as Musang King, Montong, Malika, and Bawor strengthened genetic diversity and supported germplasm conservation. This study concludes that sustainable durian cultivation effectively balances ecological, economic, and social dimensions, providing a replicable model for environmentally friendly durian farming in Indonesia while contributing to long-term agricultural sustainability and food security

Abstract

The rapid expansion of modern retail in rural and suburban areas has created a market dualism that significantly influences community consumption patterns. This study aims to analyze the specific consumer characteristics associated with the preference for shopping for basic food commodities (Sembako) in traditional versus modern markets within the Wanokaka District. A descriptive-comparative quantitative method with a cross-sectional design was employed. A sample of 100 respondents was selected using the accidental sampling technique, utilizing structured questionnaires as the primary research instrument. Data analysis involved univariate analysis to describe respondent profiles and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test to examine the relationships between variables. The findings indicate a significant correlation between education level (p=0.000), income level (p=0.001), and age (p=0.004) with the choice of shopping location. Consumers with higher education, younger age, and middle-to-upper income levels tend to prefer modern markets due to factors such as environmental comfort, price transparency, and transaction efficiency. Conversely, traditional markets continue to dominate the low-income and older consumer segments, maintaining their relevance through price negotiability, flexible retail units, and strong social interactions. This study concludes that socio-economic characteristics are the primary predictors of market segmentation in Wanokaka. It is recommended that local governments prioritize the revitalization of traditional market infrastructure to ensure its competitiveness amidst the ongoing expansion of modern retail sectors

Abstract

Sidikalang is one of Indonesia's most prominent coffee-producing regions with a long historical reputation for quality; however, it faces challenges in maintaining market position amidst global competition and inefficient supply chains. This study aims to analyze the competitiveness and formulate a sustainable development strategy for the coffee agribusiness in Sidikalang, Dairi Regency. The research employed a descriptive-comparative method using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from 60 coffee farmers through simple random sampling and 10 key stakeholders through purposive sampling. Competitiveness was measured using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index, while the development strategy was formulated using the Internal-External (IE) Matrix and SWOT Analysis. The results indicate that Sidikalang coffee possesses a strong comparative advantage with an RCA score of 2.38, driven by its unique sensory profile and geographical indications. Bivariate analysis reveals that institutional strength and post-harvest technology significantly influence the added value at the farm level. The SWOT analysis positions the Sidikalang coffee agribusiness in Quadrant I (Aggressive Strategy), with a total weighted score of 3.05. The recommended strategy focuses on an "Upstream-to-Downstream Integration" model, which includes strengthening farmer cooperatives, accelerating Geographical Indication (GI) certification to prevent brand imitation, and adopting digital marketing to shorten the supply chain. This study concludes that while Sidikalang has high comparative potential, its competitive edge must be enhanced through technological modernization and institutional empowerment to ensure long term economic sustainability for local farmers

Abstract

Smallholder plantations account for a significant portion of Indonesia's total oil palm area, yet they consistently face a substantial yield gap compared to industrial estates. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of production management and technical maintenance in smallholder plantations and analyze the influence of management variables on Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) productivity. The research was conducted using a descriptive-quantitative approach with a survey method involving 80 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using correlation and simple linear regression to determine the relationship between maintenance intensity and yield. The findings reveal that the implementation of technical culture standards—including fertilization, weed control, and pruning—among smallholders averages only 53% of the ideal standard. A critical discovery is that 55% of farmers still utilize uncertified seeds, which significantly limits their long-term production potential. Statistical analysis demonstrates that Seed Quality (r = 0.82) and Fertilization Dosage (r = 0.78) are the most dominant variables influencing productivity. Farmers utilizing certified seeds achieved 18–22 tons/ha/year, while those using uncertified seeds only produced 8–11 tons/ha/year under similar conditions. This study concludes that poor production management is primarily driven by financial constraints and limited access to technical information. Strengthening farmer institutions and facilitating access to high-quality inputs are essential to bridging the yield gap and ensuring the economic sustainability of smallholder oil palm agribusiness
