Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death in Indonesia. Inactive lifestyles and low awareness of physical fitness are major risk factors that can be prevented through early detection. Objective: This community service program aims to assess the physical fitness of employees of the Nursing Department of the Makassar Ministry of Health Polytechnic as a strategy for preventing NCDs. Implementation Method: The methods used include anthropometric measurements (height, weight, Body Mass Index/BMI, and waist circumference), metabolic parameters (fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels), and cardiovascular fitness assessment (blood pressure). Results: A total of 42 participants aged 30–65 years participated in this activity. The results showed that 61.9% of participants were obese, 47.6% had high blood sugar levels, and 26.2% had high cholesterol levels. These findings indicate that the majority of participants are at high risk for NCDs. Conclusion: This program successfully increased participants' awareness of the importance of physical fitness and early detection of NCD risk factors. Routine implementation of fitness screening in the workplace can be a strategic step in preventing and controlling NCDs and improving the quality of life for healthcare workers. Abstracts should conclude with a commentary on the significance of the results or a brief conclusion.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a growing public health problem in Indonesia and is closely linked to an unbalanced diet and lack of physical activity. This condition directly impacts the high incidence of hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and other metabolic disorders at the community level. Therefore, this community service program was implemented to improve nutritional literacy and public awareness of the importance of physical activity through basic health checks and education on healthy lifestyles. The implementation method included participant registration, blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol levels were checked, interactive education on a balanced nutritional diet was provided, and changes in participant knowledge and attitudes were measured. The results showed that some participants had relatively high blood sugar and cholesterol levels, particularly among women, while men tended to have higher uric acid levels. The education provided increased participants' understanding of the risks of metabolic syndrome and encouraged changes in attitudes towards diet and daily physical activity. Overall, this activity successfully raised participants' awareness of the importance of metabolic syndrome prevention. These findings confirm that health check-based education is an effective approach to changing behavior and can be developed into a sustainable program at the community level.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a major cause of morbidity in toddlers and is often influenced by behavioral factors, sanitation, and maternal knowledge. This situation is also evident in the Mangasa Community Health Center (Puskesmas) work area, where the proportion of toddlers who are not exclusively breastfed remains high, clean water use is suboptimal, and the majority of mothers have low levels of knowledge regarding diarrhea prevention and early detection. Based on these conditions, this community service activity was conducted to improve the ability of mothers of toddlers to prevent and recognize early signs of diarrhea through risk-factor-based health education. The implementation method included counseling, interactive discussions, and demonstrations of clean and healthy living practices, with success measured through pre-post knowledge questionnaires, behavioral observations, and short interviews. The results of the activity showed an increase in mothers' understanding of the causes of diarrhea, the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, clean water use, and initial actions when toddlers experience diarrhea. Behavioral changes were also seen in handwashing practices and improved drinking water storage. These findings indicate that risk-factor-based health education is effective in strengthening diarrhea prevention efforts in toddlers and has the potential to have long-term impacts on family health.
