Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death in Indonesia. Inactive lifestyles and low awareness of physical fitness are major risk factors that can be prevented through early detection. Objective: This community service program aims to assess the physical fitness of employees of the Nursing Department of the Makassar Ministry of Health Polytechnic as a strategy for preventing NCDs. Implementation Method: The methods used include anthropometric measurements (height, weight, Body Mass Index/BMI, and waist circumference), metabolic parameters (fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels), and cardiovascular fitness assessment (blood pressure). Results: A total of 42 participants aged 30–65 years participated in this activity. The results showed that 61.9% of participants were obese, 47.6% had high blood sugar levels, and 26.2% had high cholesterol levels. These findings indicate that the majority of participants are at high risk for NCDs. Conclusion: This program successfully increased participants' awareness of the importance of physical fitness and early detection of NCD risk factors. Routine implementation of fitness screening in the workplace can be a strategic step in preventing and controlling NCDs and improving the quality of life for healthcare workers. Abstracts should conclude with a commentary on the significance of the results or a brief conclusion.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major public health problem worldwide and a leading risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise, with South Sulawesi ranked among the highest cases. Non-pharmacological approaches are increasingly promoted as complementary strategies to enhance blood pressure control. One promising method is laughter therapy, which has been reported to improve mood, stimulate endorphin release, and reduce vascular tension. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of laughter therapy in reducing blood pressure among patients with hypertension. Methods: This research employed a descriptive case study design conducted in April 2024 at the working area of Gentungang Public Health Center, Gowa District. One hypertensive patient, aged 43 years, was purposively selected as the study subject. Laughter therapy in the form of humor-based video sessions was administered three times over one week. Blood pressure was measured before and after each intervention, accompanied by observation and patient self-report regarding physical and emotional responses. Results: The results showed a consistent reduction in blood pressure across all sessions. Average systolic pressure decreased by 16.3 mmHg and diastolic pressure by 7.6 mmHg. The patient also reported diminished headaches, improved sleep quality, and enhanced mood after the intervention. No adverse effects were observed during the therapy. Conclusions: In conclusion, laughter therapy demonstrated effectiveness as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention for lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. These findings suggest its potential integration into nursing practice, particularly in primary health care settings, to support holistic hypertension management.

Abstract

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common postoperative complication that increases hospitalization and morbidity rates. Nurses are essential in preventing SSI through evidence-based intervention. Objective: This research aims to develop evidence-based nursing intervention modules to prevent surgical wound infection in surgical patients, as well as examine the need and effectiveness of the module in improving the knowledge and skills of nurses. Methods: It utilized a Research and Development (R&D) approach with Borg & Gall model including needs analysis, design, validation, limited trials, evaluation, and implementation. It was conducted at Labuang Baji Hospital Makassar VIP room involving seven nurses as respondents. Observation, interviews, and questionnaires were used. Results: It showed nursing intervention module improved nurses' knowledge and skills in preventing surgical wound infections and strengthening nurses’ education. The module was considered understandable, relevant, and applicable. The obstacles were high workload and less training. Conclusions: This module is effective as an educational medium which can be implemented systematically in clinical practice to reduce surgical wound infections incidence.

Abstract

Background: Typhoid fever remains a major public health problem in low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia, where incidence exceeds 500 cases per 100,000 population despite modest global declines. Pharmacological treatment is essential, but non-pharmacological nursing interventions such as warm compresses may enhance fever management and patient comfort. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of warm compresses in reducing body temperature and improving comfort among hospitalized typhoid fever patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design was conducted with 32 patients diagnosed with typhoid fever at RSUD Haji Makassar between March and June 2025. Warm compresses at 40°C were applied to the axilla, forehead, and neck for 15 minutes twice daily over three days, in addition to standard pharmacological therapy. Body temperature was measured using digital thermometers, and patient comfort was assessed with a numeric rating scale. Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used for analysis. Results: Mean body temperature decreased significantly from 38.6°C (SD = 0.4) to 37.4°C (SD = 0.3) after intervention (t = 12.53, p < 0.001). Median comfort scores improved from 4 (IQR = 3–5) to 8 (IQR = 7–9) (Z = –4.89, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Warm compresses significantly reduced fever and enhanced comfort in typhoid fever patients, supporting their use as a complementary nursing intervention alongside pharmacological therapy.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a growing public health problem in Indonesia and is closely linked to an unbalanced diet and lack of physical activity. This condition directly impacts the high incidence of hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and other metabolic disorders at the community level. Therefore, this community service program was implemented to improve nutritional literacy and public awareness of the importance of physical activity through basic health checks and education on healthy lifestyles. The implementation method included participant registration, blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol levels were checked, interactive education on a balanced nutritional diet was provided, and changes in participant knowledge and attitudes were measured. The results showed that some participants had relatively high blood sugar and cholesterol levels, particularly among women, while men tended to have higher uric acid levels. The education provided increased participants' understanding of the risks of metabolic syndrome and encouraged changes in attitudes towards diet and daily physical activity. Overall, this activity successfully raised participants' awareness of the importance of metabolic syndrome prevention. These findings confirm that health check-based education is an effective approach to changing behavior and can be developed into a sustainable program at the community level.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a major cause of morbidity in toddlers and is often influenced by behavioral factors, sanitation, and maternal knowledge. This situation is also evident in the Mangasa Community Health Center (Puskesmas) work area, where the proportion of toddlers who are not exclusively breastfed remains high, clean water use is suboptimal, and the majority of mothers have low levels of knowledge regarding diarrhea prevention and early detection. Based on these conditions, this community service activity was conducted to improve the ability of mothers of toddlers to prevent and recognize early signs of diarrhea through risk-factor-based health education. The implementation method included counseling, interactive discussions, and demonstrations of clean and healthy living practices, with success measured through pre-post knowledge questionnaires, behavioral observations, and short interviews. The results of the activity showed an increase in mothers' understanding of the causes of diarrhea, the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, clean water use, and initial actions when toddlers experience diarrhea. Behavioral changes were also seen in handwashing practices and improved drinking water storage. These findings indicate that risk-factor-based health education is effective in strengthening diarrhea prevention efforts in toddlers and has the potential to have long-term impacts on family health.
