Abstract

Zakat is an Islamic financial instrument that plays a variety of roles in human life, including providing assistance to vulnerable members of society, with particular reference to people with disabilities. This paper examines the institution of Zakat as a tool for alleviating poverty in Nigeria in general and Gombe state in particular, as well as the key roles of Zakat institutions and their problematic operation in the study area. The qualitative method for the study was developed through a literature review and interviews with relevant individuals. The study's findings revealed that the poverty rate of individuals with disabilities is higher than that of any other sub-group of individuals without a disability; thus, societal attitudes toward people with disabilities must be reconsidered immediately. The use of zakat income is a relevant tool for strengthening the skills of vulnerable people, part of which is disabled people. The implications of this study serve as a basis for making recommendations for expanding the scope of distribution of Zakat properties by including consumable properties and cash, as well as textile materials and entrepreneurial packages for the most talented disabled individuals to develop and finance the businesses they have in order to develop poverty alleviation programs in the state.

Abstract

This study performs an exhaustive bibliometric analysis to delineate the global dynamics, thematic progression, and intellectual framework of zakat and poverty research from 2009 to 2025, utilizing Scopus-indexed publications. Following PRISMA-guided screening procedures, 290 English-language journal articles were chosen. We used bibliometric methods, with the help of VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel, to look at publication trends, important authors, popular journals, networks of collaboration between countries and institutions, and patterns of keyword co-occurrence. The results show that the number of publications is growing quickly and significantly, with Malaysia and Indonesia being the primary contributors to the field. Institutional networks reveal robust academic clusters in Southeast Asia, whereas journal coupling points to the importance of publications like the Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research and the International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management. Keyword mapping shows six main thematic clusters: poverty alleviation, zakat governance, Islamic microfinance, financial inclusion, digital innovation, and sustainable development. Overlay visualization shows that the topics have changed from traditional ones like charity, welfare, and poverty to more modern ones like fintech, blockchain, productive zakat, and the SDGs. Even though the field is growing quickly, there are still gaps in high-impact scholarship, governance frameworks, and global collaboration.

This study aims to analyze the growth of collection and the effectiveness and operational efficiency of zakat institutions activities. To achieve this goal, this research uses qualitative methods with a content analysis approach. This study examines 9 zakat institutions in Indonesia for 3 years from 2019 to 2021 with 27 observations. Data analysis uses a value for money approach modified by Puskas BAZNAS. To measure effectiveness using the net allocation to collection ratio (NACR), while to measure efficiency using the operational costs ratio (OCR), human resource costs ratio (HRCR), and operational costs ratio of amil rights (OCRAR). This study found that there were quite significant fluctuations in the growth of zakat institutions in the last two years. This study also found that the average NACR at zakat institutions for the last three years was considered very effective. While the efficiency ratio measured using OCR, HRCR, OCRAR is considered efficient. The performance of zakat institutions in Indonesia from a value for money perspective can be said to be good.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the community empowerment model within the Beasiswa Tahfidz Qur'an (BTQ) for Leaders program, developed by LAZNAS PPPA Daarul Qur'an for Qur'an memorization students in Yogyakarta and Central Java. This research employed a qualitative approach. Data were collected through seven years of observation and researcher involvement, interviews with stakeholders, and document studies. The data were then analyzed using an in-depth descriptive qualitative method. The findings indicate that the educational empowerment model implemented by LAZNAS PPPA Daarul Qur'an is highly unique and distinct from other models in the education sector. It encompasses skill development, strengthening of religious knowledge, control of Qur'anic memorization, empowerment training, and a mandatory one-year dedication period after graduation. This model proves to be highly effective for underprivileged families who aspire to pursue higher education while memorizing the Qur'an. Consequently, it produces hafidz and hafidzah (male and female Qur'an memorizers) who are prepared to become future leaders. Furthermore, this scholarship program enhances the welfare of its recipients, as individuals with high education and sufficient life provisions are well-positioned to improve their families' future socioeconomic status.
