Abstract

Telehealth and telemedicine enable virtual consultations between healthcare providers and patients through video calls, telephone, and online platforms, improving access to healthcare services, particularly for populations in remote areas. These technologies help overcome geographical barriers and enhance healthcare delivery efficiency. This review examines the development, applications, challenges, and future opportunities of telehealth and telemedicine in India, including issues related to technological infrastructure, digital literacy, and regulatory frameworks. It also highlights the potential of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, remote monitoring, and data analytics to strengthen telehealth services, reduce healthcare disparities, and improve health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Stroke remains a major public health concern and a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, particularly among individuals with chronic diseases living in rural areas. Self-care behavior plays an essential role in stroke prevention; however, limited evidence exists regarding how functional status influences the ability of high-risk individuals to engage in preventive health behaviors. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between functional status and self-care behavior among adults at high risk of stroke in rural communities. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional correlational study was conducted among 100 adults aged 30 years and older who were identified as having a high risk of stroke using the Thai Cardiovascular Risk Score (≥20%). Participants were recruited from ten health-promoting hospitals in rural Thailand using a multi-stage random sampling technique. Functional status and self-care behavior were assessed using validated self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product–moment correlation to examine the relationship between the two variables. Results: Participants demonstrated moderate levels of functional status (M = 55.87, SD = 9.34) and self-care behavior (M = 65.42, SD = 6.78). Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between functional status and self-care behavior (r = 0.392, p < 0.001), indicating that individuals with higher functional capacity were more likely to engage in stroke-preventive behaviors such as medication adherence, healthy diet, physical activity, and stress management. Conclusion: Functional status is an important determinant of self-care behavior among adults at high risk of stroke. Interventions aimed at maintaining or improving functional capacity may enhance self-care practices and contribute to more effective stroke prevention strategies, particularly in rural communities with limited healthcare access.

Abstract

Background: Limitations in cognitive and motor skills make these children more dependent on external support, particularly from their families. Family involvement is therefore considered an important factor in promoting independence and improving oral hygiene behaviors among children with intellectual disabilities. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family support and the level of independence of children with intellectual disabilities in maintaining dental and oral hygiene at home. Methods: This study employed a literature review design following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. A systematic search was conducted in several scientific databases, including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed, using combinations of keywords related to family support, oral hygiene, intellectual disability, and children with special needs. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were screened based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the selected studies was evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool. Results: Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The findings consistently indicated a strong positive relationship between family involvement and the oral hygiene status of children with intellectual disabilities. Parental education, supervision, and training programs were shown to significantly improve children’s tooth-brushing behavior, reduce plaque accumulation, and enhance oral hygiene practices at home. However, several barriers were identified, including limited parental knowledge, inadequate supervision, and the motor and behavioral limitations experienced by children with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: Family support plays a crucial role in improving the independence of children with intellectual disabilities in maintaining dental and oral hygiene at home. Strengthening family-based education, parental training, and supportive home-care interventions may enhance oral health outcomes and improve the overall quality of life of children with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

Background: Dietary adherence is a fundamental component of effective management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, maintaining dietary compliance remains challenging in culturally diverse and food-centered societies such as India, where traditional dietary practices, social expectations, and family dynamics significantly influence eating behaviors. Objective: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in India regarding adherence to dietary recommendations, with particular attention to sociocultural, behavioral, and emotional factors influencing dietary practices. Methods: A qualitative case study design with a positivist approach was employed. Fourteen adults diagnosed with T2DM were recruited through snowball sampling from three Primary Health Centers in India. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Strategies to ensure trustworthiness included member checking, audit trails, and data triangulation. Results: Three major themes emerged from the analysis: cultural negotiation of food choices, internalizing health literacy and self-regulation, and family roles and emotional anchors. Participants described challenges in balancing traditional dietary practices with medical recommendations, particularly during social and religious events. Individuals who were able to translate dietary knowledge into daily routines demonstrated stronger adherence behaviors. Family members played an influential role by providing emotional encouragement, assisting with meal preparation, and motivating individuals to maintain dietary discipline. Conclusion: Dietary adherence among adults with T2DM in India is shaped by complex interactions between cultural traditions, health literacy, and family dynamics. Interventions aimed at improving dietary adherence should incorporate culturally sensitive strategies and family-inclusive educational programs to support sustainable self-management.

Abstract

Background: The rapid aging of the global population has increased the demand for long-term care, with family members often serving as primary caregivers for older adults. In China, cultural values such as filial piety strongly influence caregiving responsibilities, placing significant physical, emotional, and social demands on family caregivers. Social support has been identified as an important factor that may alleviate caregiving burden and improve caregiver well-being. Objective: This study aimed to assess perceived social support among family caregivers of older adults in China and to examine demographic factors associated with variations in social support. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 family caregivers of older adults aged 60 years and above in Jiangsu Province, China. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling from urban and rural communities. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize caregiver characteristics and levels of perceived support, while inferential analyses, including independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), were performed to identify demographic factors associated with perceived social support. Results: Caregivers reported the highest perceived social support from family members (M = 5.39), followed by significant others (M = 5.22) and friends (M = 4.88). Male caregivers reported significantly higher levels of perceived social support compared to female caregivers (p = 0.005). In addition, caregivers who had provided care for more than ten years reported significantly greater social support than those with shorter caregiving durations (p < 0.001). No significant associations were found between perceived social support and caregiver age, income, education, employment status, or caregiver training. Conclusion: Family remains the primary source of social support for caregivers of older adults in China. Gender and caregiving duration significantly influence perceived support levels. Strengthening community-based and peer support networks may help improve caregiver well-being and reduce caregiving burden
