Abstract

Oblique lumbar radiographic examinations require assistive devices to facilitate patient positioning and produce accurate radiographs showing the Scottie dog sign. Oblique lumbar patient positioning requires the patient to be tilted 45 degrees to the right or Right Posterior Oblique (RPO) and 45 degrees to the left or Left Posterior Oblique (LPO). The results of the design and construction of the oblique lumbar radiography examination aid need to be implemented in real-world healthcare services within the hospital's radiology unit. The purpose of this community service is to introduce, educate, and implement the results of the design and construction of an oblique lumbar radiography examination aid. The community service methods are thru lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice. The community service element involves Radiographers in hospitals where there is a demand for oblique lumbar radiographic examinations, as well as student interns. The direct application of the oblique lumbar radiographic examination aid by Radiographers on patients has successfully produced oblique lumbar radiographs that clearly show the Scottie dog sign, thereby improving healthcare services, particularly in the field of radiology.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing global health problem, including in Indonesia where the prevalence continues to rise annually. The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has largely been health officer-centered, with limited involvement of patients and families, which leads to suboptimal outcomes. This community service program (PkM) aimed to empower communities in Plalangan Subdistrict, Gunungpati District, Semarang City, through the training of health cadres in T2DM management. The program was conducted in two phases: pre-activity coordination with local stakeholders and the implementation of training activities. A total of 40 health cadres participated in training that included education on diabetes management, child diabetes, and simple blood glucose monitoring techniques using glucometers. Results showed that cadres successfully improved their knowledge and practical skills, demonstrated the ability to conduct capillary blood glucose tests, and acted as community educators in DM prevention and management. The involvement of trained cadres strengthened primary healthcare services by supporting early detection, encouraging healthy behaviors, and enhancing patient adherence. This program highlights the critical role of community empowerment and cadre training in improving diabetes management and quality of life at the community level.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TBC) remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with the country ranking high for TBC cases globally, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The lack of awareness and limited access to early detection methods contribute to the high rate of late-stage TBC diagnoses. To address this, community outreach activities involving health education and chest imaging screenings were conducted in Batursari Village, Kecamatan Mranggen, Demak. The primary objective was to enhance community awareness regarding TBC and provide accessible chest imaging screening. A total of 42 participants, including suspected TBC patients and their families, participated in the program. The results revealed that while most participants had normal chest imaging findings, some required further examinations due to suspicious abnormalities. This paper discusses the methods used, outcomes, and the importance of such preventive measures in combating the spread of TBC.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is vital for infant health, yet record-keeping and reporting at primary health centers in Semarang remain suboptimal. A preliminary study at Puskesmas Tlogosari Kulon revealed the absence of a dedicated cohort register for breastfeeding mothers, resulting in inaccurate and inconsistent data. Accurate data, however, is essential to inform policy and decision-making. This community service program aimed to establish and train the DAKASI (Dasa Wisma Kawal ASI Eksklusif) team as companions for breastfeeding mothers while implementing exclusive breastfeeding record-keeping practices. The program followed five stages (5P): preparation, member recruitment, training, mentoring and practice in exclusive breastfeeding record-keeping using a cohort register, and program strengthening. Results showed the formation of a 15-member DAKASI team, improved knowledge (mean score increased from 60.61 pre-test to 82.84 post-test), and improved practical skills in record-keeping (from 63.34 to 87.21). The training effectively enhanced both cognitive and practical abilities of DAKASI cadres. In conclusion, DAKASI successfully provided mentoring and exclusive breastfeeding documentation at the community level while also delivering education and motivation to mothers.

Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability among older adults and has a significant impact on physical function, nutritional status, oral health, and quality of life. Post-stroke elderly often experience motor impairment, dysphagia, malnutrition, and poor oral hygiene, resulting in increased dependency and decreased well-being. This community service program aimed to strengthen community empowerment through the development of SERI Elderly Villages (Healthy and Independent) for post-stroke patients in the working area of Bandarharjo Community Health Center, Semarang. The program applied a research-based community empowerment approach involving health education, basic health screening, oral hygiene examination, dental scaling, nutrition counseling, physical fitness training, and oral exercise assistance. The targets were post-stroke elderly and their family caregivers in Bandarharjo sub-districts. The results showed improved knowledge, awareness, and independence of post-stroke elderly in performing physical fitness exercises and oral exercises, as well as better self-care and oral hygiene practices. This program supports primary health care transformation through sustainable community empowerment toward healthy and independent elderly communities.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in children, characterized by impaired physical growth and cognitive development due to long-term chronic malnutrition. This condition occurs from the fetal period through early childhood, commonly referred to as the first 1,000 days of life. Preventing stunting requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including the active role of adolescents as agents of change within the community. This community service program aimed to enhance adolescents’ capacity for early detection of stunting and to strengthen collaboration with primary health centers in addressing stunting. The methods included health education, capacity building for adolescent cadres, and cross-sector collaboration with community health centers. The results showed that adolescent cadres, in collaboration with partners, were able to implement iron supplementation (iron tablets) programs for elementary, junior high, and senior high school students. In addition, adolescent cadres actively provided education to parents and adolescents on adequate nutrition and early stunting prevention. This program is expected to serve as a sustainable strategy to support the acceleration of stunting reduction in the community.

Abstract

The postpartum period is a critical phase for maternal health, characterized by physiological recovery and increased risk of complications such as postpartum hemorrhage and musculoskeletal discomfort, including back pain. Traditional abdominal binding practices, such as bengkung, are widely used in Indonesian communities and are believed to support uterine involution, improve abdominal muscle tone, and reduce postpartum discomfort. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of community health cadres through training on the correct and safe application of bengkung as part of postpartum care in Pudakpayung, Semarang. The program employed a community-based training and mentoring approach conducted offline with strict health protocols. Participants consisted of 20 community health cadres who received health education on postpartum physiological changes and hands-on training on bengkung application. Cadres’ skills were assessed using pre-test and post-test evaluations. The results showed that prior to the training, 75% of cadres demonstrated poor skills and 25% demonstrated moderate skills in bengkung application. Following the intervention, 100% of cadres achieved good skill levels. Statistical analysis indicated a significant improvement in cadres’ skills after the training (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that bengkung application training is effective in improving the competencies of community health cadres. This program supports community empowerment and contributes to strengthening community-based postpartum care, with potential benefits for improving maternal comfort and preventing postpartum complications.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus remain major public health problems worldwide [1,2]. This community service program aimed to improve community knowledge and awareness in preventing NCDs through the utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). The activity was conducted in Meteseh Subdistrict, Semarang City, involving PKK women. Methods included pre-test assessment, free health screening, interactive education, physical exercise, and post-test evaluation. The program demonstrated increased community understanding of NCD prevention and TOGA utilization. Integrated education and empowerment activities effectively support sustainable community health promotion. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus remain the leading causes of morbidity, mortality, and health financing burden in Indonesia. The increasing prevalence of NCDs poses a significant challenge to the sustainability of the national health system, including the National Health Insurance (JKN). Comprehensive and preventive approaches based on community empowerment are therefore urgently needed in line with the pillars of Indonesia’s Health System Transformation. This community service program aimed to strengthen community capacity in preventing NCDs through integrated health education, early screening, and the utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (Tanaman Obat Keluarga/TOGA) as culturally appropriate preventive resources, while supporting digital health integration through the SATU SEHAT platform. The program was conducted in Meteseh Subdistrict, Semarang City, involving members of the PKK women’s group. Methods included pre-test assessment, blood pressure and random blood glucose screening, interactive education on NCD prevention and TOGA utilization, healthy heart exercise sessions, and post-test evaluation. The results demonstrated improved community knowledge regarding NCD risk factors, preventive behaviors, and evidence-based utilization of TOGA such as ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, and galangal. The program also increased awareness of routine health monitoring and data integration within the national health information system. This study concludes that community empowerment integrating traditional resources, lifestyle modification, and digital health awareness effectively supports NCD prevention and contributes to health system resilience. Sustained community engagement and policy alignment are essential to ensure long-term impact.
