Abstract

Bored piles have been used to support transportation infrastructures (offices, a terminal building, power house, warehouses and workshop) in a harbor. The bored piles were penetrated into mostly old alluvial deposits and dilluvial deposits of very stiff marine clay with traces of shell debris. A bored pile was tested as part of this research program to verify the accuracy of the predicted pile capacities. The proposed static prediction capacity methods include Meyerhof, a, b and l methods. The results of the analysis show that Meyerhof method (1951) with inputs of laboratory test data provides closely agreement with static loading test results. The other methods give somewhat conservative prediction. This paper discusses bearing capacity analysis of bored piles based on soil characteristics and static loading test results. Results of the analysis indicate that the bored piles capable of resisting load transmitted from the upper structure. The research will be of interest to many practicing engineers using this kind of piles.

Abstract

In consequence of the increasing of regional economic activities in Pulau Batam, a reliable transportation system is required. Decreasing road network performance as a result of increasing traffic volume needs a strategic planning to anticipate the worsening condition in the future. One of the solutions is by providing mass transit system which is expected to attract private car users. Therefore, determination of potential corridor of mass transit system need to be identified so that the system provide better accessibility. Trip pattern in Pulau Batam must be known by developing trip distribution model. The trip distribution model is calibrated using origin-destination (O-D) data that is based on home interview survey. The validated model will be used to forecast and simulate travel demand onto transport network. Result of model calibration process shows mean trip length difference between model and survey is equal 0.141 %. From simulation of trip assignment is obtained that potential corridor for mass transit system using LRT is Batu Ampar – Batu Aji via Muka Kuning. Passenger forecast in the year 2030 is 193,990 passenger/day (2 directions).

Abstract

Traffic information condition is a very useful information for road user because road user can choose his best route for each trip from his origin to his destination. The final goal for this research is to develop real time traffic information system for road user using real time traffic volume. Main input for developing real time traffic information system is an origin-destination (O-D) matrix to represent the travel pattern. However, O-D matrices obtained through a large scale survey such as home or road side interviews, tend to be costly, labour intensive and time disruptive to trip makers. Therefore, the alternative of using traffic counts to estimate O-D matrices is particularly attractive. Models of transport demand have been used for many years to synthesize O-D matrices in study areas. A typical example of the approach is the gravity model; its functional form, plus the appropriate values for the parameters involved, is employed to produce acceptable matrices representing trip making behaviour for many trip purposes and time periods. The work reported in this paper has combined the advantages of acceptable travel demand models with the low cost and availability of traffic counts. Two types of demand models have been used: gravity (GR) and gravity-opportunity (GO) models. Four estimation methods have been analysed and tested to calibrate the transport demand models from traffic counts, namely: Non-Linear-Least-Squares (NLLS), Maximum-Likelihood (ML), Maximum-Entropy (ME) and Bayes-Inference (BI). The Bandung’s Urban Traffic Movement survey has been used to test the developed method. Based on several statistical tests, the estimation methods are found to perform satisfactorily since each calibrated model reproduced the observed matrix fairly closely. The tests were carried out using two assignment techniques, all-or-nothing and equilibrium assignment.

Abstract

A Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT) is a tunnel that floats in water, supported by its buoyancy specifically by employing the hydrostatic thrust. In order to construct the foundation of the SFT, soil investigation has to be performed in advance. The soil investigation includes identification of subsurface soil profile, geotechnical index properties and parameters. Results of the soil investigation were used to he analyze and develop alternatives of the foundations for anchoring the prototype of the SFT. This paper discusses the alternatives of the foundations based on soil condition and applied tension leg. The research will be of interest to many practicing engineers and researchers regarding the subject matter.

Abstract

Public Private Partnership (PPP), recently is becoming popular issue among stakeholders in infrastructure development in Indonesia. In other countries, infrastructure facilities such as Toll Road, Water Supply Network, Electricity Power, Harbour, Airport, Health Services, and Education have already been using PPP scheme. PPP is needed due to the limitation of government budget, infrastructure life time based on the quantity and the quality, and also the private sector skill/technology capability. In term of infrastructure quality competitiveness, based on the survey resulted in the World Competitiveness Report 2008-2009, showed that Indonesia is on the 96th rank among 134 countires surveyed. It can be argued that Indonesian infrastructure quality is still low in comparison to the other South East Asian Countries, even from its neighborhood countries. Government budget for infrastructure investment including transportation in 2010-2014 is very limited namely around 32% including from bilateral and multilateral loan. Therefore the 62% government budget remains must be fulfilled by another scheme such as Public Private Partnership.

Abstract

Parameter ratios are important information for the ship designer in the preliminary design stages. They can be used as a tool to identify the main parameter of vessel and their other technical characteristics. The information about parameter ratios of mono-hull vessel is currently available in Naval Architecture literatures, but it is not the case for the type of twin-hull vessel called catamaran. Having conducted technical analysis in this research, it has been identified that parameter ratios of passenger catamaran vessel made of FRP has values of L / B ratio from 2.52 up to 3.7, L / D ratio from 5.25 up to 11:24, slenderness ratio (Lwl/BwL) from 9 up to 12. Other values of various parameter ratios like B/T, D/T, L /√ L, and Displacement/L are also discussed.

Abstract

Connecting rod and crank pin bearing are important components of automotive diesel engine. If these components failed, all of engine system would be shut down. In this research, these components failed during operation. Detail analysis of the failed surface showed that the failure in connecting rod and crank pin bearing was caused by improper lubrication system. Evidence of improper lubrication system was proved by the existence of black scratch and chipping on crank pin bearing which formed by high friction during operation. High friction affects performance of other pistons and therefore bolts of connecting rod experienced dynamic tension load. With repeated load during operation, crack initiated on the bolts and propagated until the bolt could not withstand the load anymore before they are finally broken.

Abstract

In this paper a case study about concrete strength assessment of bridge structure experiencing fire is discussed. Assessment methods include activities of visual inspection, concrete testing by Hammer Test, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test, and Core Test. Then, test results are compared with the requirement of RSNI T-12-2004. Test results show that surface concrete at the location of fire deteriorates so that its quality is decreased into the category of Very Poor with ultrasonic pulse velocity ranges between 1,14 – 1,74 km/s. From test results also it can be known that concrete compressive strength of inner part of bridge pier ranges about 267 – 274 kg/cm2 and concrete compressive strength of beam and plate experiencing fire directly is about 173 kg/cm2 and 159 kg/cm2. It can be concluded that surface concrete strength at the location of fire does not meet the requirement of RSNI T-12-2004. So, repair on surface concrete of pier, beam, and plate at the location of fire is required.

Abstract

In order to meet the safety and security of the public transportation, design specification of construction body bus or bus frame structures should have an appropriate structural strength and comply with standard design including the safety factor and selection of material besides static and dynamic testing of the part of body bus. It is also realized that a bus carrying passengers have to give secure to the passengers also driver. The fact that a technology concerning with metal works industry to fascinate the body bus industry is being used in small and medium body bus industries. Eventhough some of the body bus industries having designer background but it may still develop their design capability by using advanced technology. Materials to be used for designing parts of body bus should meet specific requirements. It could be understood that safety and security during operation is a priority matter.Lifetime of the bus parts or components may be predicted through the dynamic or fatigue test from its parts or components. Palmgren and Miner hypothesis may be used in dynamic ratio decision in connection with fatigue test application up to the fraction of the parts or components being tested.

Abstract

Jakarta as a capital city with more than ten million people is facing transportation problems which are already at a critical stage. Such problem can not be solved with conventional approach any more. Alternative solution by deploying Trans Jakarta bus fleet can not bring significant results. Classical constraints such as bad coordination, sectoral interest of related parties still become the main hurdle. Whether we like it or not, mass rapid transport (MRT) system has to be developed in Jakarta. Based on experiences of some cities abroad. MRT solution is absolutely the right choice. This paper presented typical insight of MRT abroad, followed with technical preparation of Jakarta MRT project starting from planning, implementation, up to key factors that should be well considered in order to avoid the failure of project execution.
