Abstract

Single mode directional couplers are key components in many optical communication and sensor applications, including optical power splitting, optical filtering, optical reflecting, wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing, and optical polarisation splitting. The general basic principle in most directional coupler is that under appropriate conditions light transfer can occur between the two adjacent fiber cores via a mechanism called evanescent wave coupling. When the two cores are put closely together the evanescent field travelling from the throughput fiber reaches the coupled waveguide and excite a mode in it. In this paper we use two approaches in analyzing the properties of directional couplers, namely the coupled mode thery and the method of lines. it is found that the two methods agree very well.

Abstract

One aspect of the agricultural development is an information corresponding to potency and availability of land resources for both intensification and extensification. In order to derive a such information, a study on Remote Sensing and GIS Technology Application for Agro-ecological and Land Resource Zoning has been done in Agam District, West Sumatra. The aim of the study is to set up maps of agro-ecological zone and its availability for a sustain agricultural development. A brief explanation of the methodology used in the study is presented referring to FAO procedure. The step of the activities consist of secondary data compilation, field survey, spatial analysis, and mapping. All of the spatial data analysis were conducted by using GIS and Remote Sensing soft-wares, that is to say, Arc-View and ER-Mapper. Explanation of the physical environment are exposed as preliminary knowledge of the study area. The results of the land evaluation for agricultural cultivation are divided into three groups, those are (a) Food crops and vegetables, (b) food crops, vegetables and annual crops, and (c) Annual crops. Those of each group has 43,079 hectares (19.3 % of district area), 29,514 hectares (13.2 % of district area), and 56,390 hectares (25.3 % of district area) that suitable for corresponding agricultural development, respectively. The rest covering 42.21 % of the district area are not suitable for agricultural cultivation because of natural limiting factors, such as topography, soil and climate. Regarding to the existing land use, not all suitable lands are available for agriculture extension. In this evaluation, 32,009 hectares or 14.3 % of the district area are available for those of agriculture extension.

Abstract

A preliminary research on the roles of information can communication technology for poverty alleviation has been done. The research based on analysis of secondary data on ICT access and poverty data during the year 200-2006. It was found that there exist paradoxes where ICT infrastructure mainly concentrated in the capital city and other big cities but poverty mainly concentrated in rural area. These have created complex problem to solve poverty by using ICT. This paper is trying to introduce the roles of ICT and its solution in helping to reduce poverty in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper presents mobile robot navigation in an environment that is unstructured, dynamic and not predefined. This navigation is based on continually sensing the local environment. Robot and personnel safety is a dominant and essential requirement for this navigation. Therefore a method for obtaining safe directions in a tessellated map of the environment is introduced. Linear combination of vectors is used to obtain the path that is a compromise between the safest and the shortest path. The path enables a mobile robot to reach its goal directly and safely.

Abstract

Optical directional couplers are fundamental building components for the design ofoptical circuits. The proper treatment of a device that couples the guided modes ofa waveguide with the radiation in free space is particularly difficult because of thecontinuum nature of the radiating modes. The desire of high-density integrationposes additional problems due to the fact that the simplest used couplingstructures need to be quite large. In order to reduce the size of the device we studynon-periodic structures based on air gap isolated directional couplers, for whichadditional degrees of freedom are available. The analysis of this type of structuresrequires a rigorous method for the solution of the field equations. We employ themethod of lines for the computation of such coupler characteristics.

Abstract

Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll-a (SSC) can be detected by Ocean Color and Thermal Scanner (OCTS) derived from the Advance Earth Observation Satellite (ADEOS) sensor. These parameters are useful to estimate the potential fishing ground by identification of the upwelling and marine productivity on the study of fisheries oceanography within the tropical area of Indonesia.
