Abstract

Islamic civilization has given birth to many great and famous philosophers and scientists in their respective fields. Al-Razi was one of the scientists in the Islamic world, and had a great influence on European science and medicine. Abu Bakar Muhammad bin Zakariya al-Razi (865-925 AD), he is known as one of the leading scientists, philosophers and doctors in Islamic civilization. His thinking is rational and humanist. brought great influence in various fields, especially in the fields of philosophy and medicine. One of al-Razi's most controversial philosophical contributions is his concept of al-Qudama al-Khomsa or the five eternals. In this view, al-Razi proposed five eternal entities: God, soul, matter, time, and space. In contrast to the dominant theological views of its time, this concept emphasized a rational approach aimed at explaining the origin of the universe metaphysically. In the figure of Al-Razi, the qualifications of the theocentric paradigm as well as the anthropocentric paradigm were gathered but rejected the “concept of prophecy” which put him in big trouble and received the verdict of al-mulhid (atheist).

Abstract

The philosophical thought of Al-Ghazali (1058–1111 CE) had a great influence on the Islamic intellectual tradition, especially in the relationship between reason and revelation. Al-Ghazali is known for his efforts to criticize and reduce the dominance of peripatetic philosophy influenced by Aristotelian thought, especially through his monumental work Tahafut al-Falasifah (The Confusion of the Philosophers). In this work, Al-Ghazali challenged the rationalistic view that considers reason as the only source of truth, stating that human reason has limitations that cannot reach absolute truth without divine revelation. In addition, Al-Ghazali criticized the views of philosophers such as Ibn Sina, who he said were unable to balance between rational philosophy and the spiritual dimension in the search for knowledge. His thinking also involved the importance of Sufism (Islamic mysticism), which was considered a more appropriate path to achieving a deeper understanding of God and the nature of human existence. Al-Ghazali argued that direct spiritual experience through contemplation and purification of the soul is far more profound than knowledge obtained only through reason and rational argument.  In Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din, Al-Ghazali presents a practical ethics and philosophy that teaches self-control, simplicity, and a higher purpose in life as a means to attain closeness to God. By emphasizing the balance between reason, revelation, and spiritual experience, Al-Ghazali successfully combined philosophy with religious teachings, making a major contribution to the development of Islamic theological and philosophical thought that remains relevant today.

Abstract

Suhrawardi (1154-1191) is one of the leading philosophers in the Islamic philosophical tradition who introduced the Philosophy of Illumination (Hikmat al-Ishraq) as a synthesis between Peripatetic rationalism and mystical experience. Suhrawardi emphasized that enlightenment (isyraq) through intuitive experience has a fundamental role in understanding reality. The main concept in his philosophy is the hierarchy of light, where everything in existence is a graded manifestation of the Light above all light (Nur al-Anwar). This research uses the literature review method by examining texts. The results show that Suhrawardi's theory of illumination not only contributed to the development of Islamic philosophy, but also had an influence in mysticism and Sufism. By emphasizing the importance of inner experience and illumination in achieving the essence, Suhrawardi's thought remains relevant in the study of Islamic philosophy and contemporary epistemological discussions.

Abstract

This article aims to comprehensively examine the theological schools of Ash'arism and Maturidism, along with their relationship to Mu'tazilite thought. Ash'arism and Maturidism emerged as responses to the extreme rationalism promoted by the Mu'tazilites. Both schools offer a balanced approach between reason and revelation, with Ash'arism prioritizing scriptural authority and Maturidism granting a greater role to rational inquiry within the boundaries of Sunni orthodoxy. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method using a library research approach based on both classical and contemporary literature. The findings reveal that, although Ash'arism and Maturidism share the same Sunni foundations, they differ significantly in their epistemological emphasis and doctrinal details. This article highlights key similarities and differences among the three schools, particularly regarding the nature of God, human free will, the createdness of the Qur’an, and ethical reasoning. It is hoped that this study contributes to the strengthening of a moderate Islamic theology that is both faithful to revelation and responsive to contemporary challenges.
