Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and processes of artistic expression in early childhood through educative music activities within kindergarten learning contexts. Artistic expression in early childhood represents an essential dimension of holistic development, encompassing cognitive, motor, social-emotional, and creative aspects. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 15 children aged 5–6 years. Data were collected through participatory observation during four music learning sessions, semi-structured interviews with the classroom teacher, and documentation. Data analysis followed an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing conducted continuously throughout the research process. The findings indicate that educative music activities—including singing, movement and song, rhythmic games, and simple instrument exploration—consistently facilitated the emergence of artistic expression. The most dominant form of expression appeared in movement and song activities, followed by vocal improvisation during singing sessions. Children demonstrated variations in intonation, spontaneous lyrical modification, expressive body movements, rhythmic alterations, and exploration of sound intensity. These expressions emerged when learning activities provided opportunities for exploration and improvisation within a play-based environment supported by teacher scaffolding. The study concludes that educative music activities function not merely as instructional tools but as creative spaces that nurture children’s artistic identity and self-expression. The findings suggest that early childhood educators should design music learning experiences that prioritize participation, flexibility, and imaginative engagement to optimize the development of artistic expression.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the negotiation of cultural identity through ritual music practices among coastal communities in Java. Ritual music in coastal societies functions not merely as ceremonial accompaniment but as a symbolic medium through which collective identity is expressed, contested, and reconstructed in everyday social life. This research employs a qualitative ethnographic approach conducted in a coastal village in Java, involving ritual performers, community elders, religious figures, and local residents across generations as participants. Data were collected through participant observation during the preparation and performance of the ritual, in-depth interviews, and audio-visual documentation supported by detailed fieldnotes. Credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation and member checking with key informants. Data analysis was conducted thematically using an interactive cycle of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that ritual music serves as a dynamic arena for negotiating identity between tradition and modernity, local belief systems and formal religious influences, as well as communal heritage and external cultural pressures. Musical elements such as repertoire selection, instrumentation, performance structure, and spatial arrangement reflect adaptive strategies that maintain continuity while accommodating socio-cultural change. The study also identifies generational differences in interpreting ritual music, indicating an ongoing reinterpretation of cultural symbols through discourse and participation. This research concludes that ritual music in Javanese coastal communities operates as an active cultural mechanism that sustains collective identity while enabling flexible adaptation to contemporary transformations. The findings offer empirical grounding for ethnomusicological discussions on ritual, identity, and change and provide practical insight for community-based cultural safeguarding.

Abstract

This study examines the role of viral music on social media in shaping public political perceptions in the digital era. In contemporary political communication, music circulating through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube has evolved beyond entertainment into a persuasive medium influencing audience interpretation of political events, actors, and narratives. This research employs a mixed-method approach combining content analysis of viral political-themed music clips and survey data measuring audience perception changes. The findings indicate that viral music significantly contributes to the construction of simplified political narratives, emotional framing, and collective opinion formation. Algorithmic amplification, repetition, and participatory culture strengthen the persuasive power of music-based political messages. The study also reveals that audiences with higher exposure to viral political music demonstrate stronger affective responses and clearer political positioning compared to those with limited exposure. Music functions not only as an expressive cultural form but also as a strategic communicative instrument that shapes political meaning in digital public spheres. The research concludes that viral music plays a substantial role in influencing public political perception by merging entertainment, emotion, and algorithm-driven visibility.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation and impact of a music-based nutrition campaign within the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). As a national initiative designed to improve children’s nutritional status, MBG requires effective communication strategies to encourage positive eating behavior and program acceptance. This research employed a quasi-experimental design involving elementary school students participating in the program. A music-based campaign was developed in the form of educational songs promoting balanced nutrition, healthy eating habits, and awareness of the MBG objectives. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test questionnaires measuring students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions related to nutrition, as well as observation during program implementation. The findings indicate that the integration of music into nutrition campaigns significantly increased students’ understanding of balanced dietary concepts and strengthened positive attitudes toward consuming the provided meals. Students exposed to the music-based intervention demonstrated higher engagement and recall of nutritional messages compared to conventional verbal explanations. The participatory and repetitive nature of music facilitated message retention and emotional connection to the campaign content. The study concludes that music-based communication serves as an effective and engaging strategy for supporting behavioral change within the Free Nutritious Meal Program. The findings suggest that integrating creative musical approaches into public health campaigns can enhance program effectiveness and sustainability, particularly in school-based contexts.

Abstract

Digital transformation in the last two decades has reconfigured the production, distribution, documentation, and research of traditional music across the globe, including in archipelagic regions like Indonesia. This article aims to conceptually analyze how the digital shift transforms the paradigm of ethnomusicology and its implications for research in the Indonesian archipelago (Nusantara). This study employs a conceptual approach through a critical literature review of platform mediation studies, online ethnography, computational ethnomusicology, artificial intelligence (AI), and archipelagic studies. The analysis indicates that digitalization expands archive access, increases visibility for previously marginalized regions, and enables cross-island and transnational collaborations. However, this transformation also presents serious challenges such as the commodification of identity via algorithms, computational bias against non-Western musical systems, the reduction of ritual context in digital clips, and ethical issues regarding representation and data ownership. This article proposes four dimensions of digital transformation in archipelagic ethnomusicology: platform mediation, computation and AI, digital pedagogy, and methodological adaptation. This framework emphasizes the importance of a hybrid approach between online and offline work, cultural sensitivity in technological design, and decolonial reflection on global digital infrastructure. The contribution of this article lies in the integration of digital transformation theory with the concept of "islandness" as a conceptual foundation for the development of Indonesian ethnomusicology in the digital age.
