Abstract

A field experiment on aphid predation was. conducted at Lebah Bulus, Jakarta, Indonesia, using a predator bettle, Chilomenes sexmaculata, to obtain information of the beetles feeding performance to its prey, Aphis medicaginia. The experiment was done using an exclussion methode. The result indicates that the aphid population in the caged pods increased remarhabiy up to maximum number when the alate individuals uiere produced. While the aphid populations on the uncaged pods increased tiery slightly due to contineus predc tion by the beetles. The difference between the aphid lumber on the caged and uncaged pods indicates the number of theaphids eaten by the beetles.

Abstract

An ecological sfudy of Telescopium telescopium was conducted in regard to its distribution and=density, and brief observations were made on its foraging activities, The study was carried out in 12 mangrove forests. distributed in Java, Maluku and Iric-i Jaya. The result indicates that the snail occured at a very low frequency and density. It may be due to its preference to an open area, 'as well as its restricted distribution within the forest, The shell is of two forms, the typical and the smooth form, There is a distinct habitat segregation between the two forms owing to the degree of shadiness, The time of activity is related to the tidal regime, with movement begun when animals are exposed to the air, During their inactive phase, these snails are burried into the muddy substrate. The fact that the animal are not active simultaneously leads into a suggestion that the snail is able to maintain its feeding activity from its burrow, even during high tide.

Abstract

An account is given on two species of freshwater flat-fish, Achiroides melanorhynchus (Blkr) and A. leucorhyncus Blkr. The eristing description of the latter species is considered inadequate and is hereby corrected based on twelve specimens collected from Lampung, South Sumatra. It is a new locality record for the species as well.

Abstract

Differences in travel height between age-sex classes of the Sumatran orangutans are determined by locomotory efficiency in relation to body weight. The distribution of travel height in relation to resting heights suggests also possible influence of predation. Travel height does hardly restrain diet choice, because differences in diet between sexes are not associated with differences in strata utilization with regard to feeding.

Abstract

Pterocyclus spiroliratus n.sp. a cyclophorid land snail is described from Aceh province, North Sumatra. This second species of the genus described from Sumatra is characterized: by the present of several spiral ribs.

Abstract

During May-June 2008 survey an individual Leopoldamys was caught withbicolored tail sharply demarcated between the upper and lower part from Haju Maruwaiarea in Kalimantan. Following this two more specimens from the MZB collection werefound with individual bicolor tails from Bukit Baka National Park West Kalimantan andCibodas Botanical Garden Gede Pangrango, West Jawa. Comparative study on theexternal characters and skull measurements with L. sabanus, L. edwardsi and L.siporanus from Kalimantan, Jawa and Sumatra and adjacent islands (using invariable,multivariate and discriminant analysis), revealed significant differences between thenew Leopoldamys sp and established L. sabanus, L. edwardsi and L. neilli from Jawa,Kalimantan, Sumatra and adjacent islands. On the basis of these characteristicdifferences we described it as Leopoldamys diwangkarai sp nov and its exposition isdiscussed.
