Abstract

Study on species status of a rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was conducted. The objectives of the study were to explorethe genetic variation among populations of S. incertulas in Java and to clarify itsspecies status based on CO I gene sequences. The results showed that from the entire680-bp region of sequences from10 population in Java, 99 % were constant. The averageof estimated sequence divergences in the comparisons among populations withinS.incertulas was very low about 0.01%. The base composition was slightly A+T biased(C:0.15) with G+C contents was 37.09%. The result of phylogenetic analysis showedthat S.incertulas is a single species with S.innotata as its sister group. The differenceson the body-size, black spot at female’s forewing, forewing length within S.incertulasare solely natural variation.

Abstract

A study of the eulophid wasp subfamily Eulophinae was carried outbetween 2004-2006 in Java and the adjacent small islands (e.g. Bali, Madura,Nusa Barong, Sempu, Nusakambangan and Krakataus) to determine theEulophinae fauna of Java. As a result, 23 genera and 86 species, belonging tothe subfamily Eulophinae were found, from those 11 genera and 35 species arenew record for Java and Indonesia. Key to genera, generic diagnostic and theavailable eulophine species to the islands are presented.

Abstract

Fourteen species of parasitic wasps in the genus Pediobius Walker(Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are reported from Java, Indonesia, based on existingliteratures and an examination of about 130 specimens of the genus newlycollected from many localities in Java. The following five species are recordedfrom Java for the first time: Pediobius agaristae (Cameron), P. aspidomorphae(Girault), P. foveolatus (Crawford), P. inexpectatus Kerrich, and P. viridifrons(Motschulsky). Detailed citation, hosts, locality records, material examined aregiven for all species and arranged in alphabetical order.

Abstract

Green turtle (Chelonia mydas L.) tend to have their nesting sites in sunken places above high tide mark on sea shore which are gently sloping into deep water. Sand particles form more than 90% .and the remaining are dust and clay particles. The particles can be classified as fine to medium size. Mineral fractions of sand in the nesting sites are varied, it depends on its parent material. Quartz is one of the.most significant component on turtle nesting sites. Vegetasion along the beach where turtles build their nest are usually composed of Pandanus tectorius and Ipomoea pescaprae.

Abstract

Frequent volcanic eruptions, submergence and emergence of some of theIndonesian islands has made them ail object of intense biogeographical significance. These geological catastrophies resulted in complete sterilization of the area biologically, wiping out all forms of life. Subsequent reuegetation and establishment of new fauna attracted many scientists, some of them having made very significant contributions. The present contribution deals with termite fauna of Krakatau and associated islands. In all, twenty five species and 13 genera, the highest number so far reported, from Carita (9 species), Panaitan Islands (6 species), Rahota Besar (2 species), Anak Krakatau and Sertung (1 species each) have been recorded in this publication. Of these, while, Prorhinotermes panaitanensis is new to science, two species (Glyptotermes besarensis and G. panaitanensis) have been described recently by the senior author (MLT). Similarly Glyptotermes minutus, Nasutitermes culasiensis and Hospitalitermes buzpnensis have been recorded for the first time from the Indonesia. Several other species are new distributional records. Nasutitermes matagensis matagensiformisand Schedorhinotermes javanicus are the most successfully colonizedspecies, recorded almost in all the islands under reference. Besides the taxonomic treatment of the fauna, the paper also gives key to genera based on soldier caste.

Abstract

Collection of Psocidae in Bali und Lombok in August-December 1987 by I.W.B.T., in September 198'1 by C. Lienhard, and in August 1990 by E.S.K. were examined to characterise taxonomically this family on these islands. Thirteen species of the family had previously been reported on one or both islands. Species in the collections under study not previously recorded from the islands are: Ptycta incurvata Thornton (known from Hong Kong); Trichadenotecnum malayense New (known from the Malay Peninsula); Cycetes thyrsophoroides Enderlein (known from Java)two species (representing a new genus, Indoblaste); and seven other newly described species, one each of Sigmatoneura and Ptycta, three of Psocidus s.str. and two of Trichadenotecnum. Moreover, two species, one psocine and one amphigerontine could not be placed into presently diagnosed genera and may represent new genera. Descriptions of previously undescribed species are provided, as are descriptions ofthe males of Clematoscenea lemniscata Enderlein, Psocidus reidi Thomton, and a further description of Cycetes thyrsophoroides. Ptycta frontalis Thornton. A key to genera, and keys to species within larger genera, are provided, using, where possible, features observable without dissection. Five species from Bali are endemic, and 5 from Lombok; both islands share a further 7 species endemic to the two islands. Additionally, 10 species known from the islands are found elsewhere. The Bali-Lombok fauna of Psocidae now stands at 27 species and there is no evidence from the species discovery curve that the total fauna has yet been sampled. Of the 10 single-island endemics none is eurytopic (found at a wide range of altitudes). In contrast, of the 11 species found on both islands, 8 (73%) are eurytopic. Bali endemics tend to be highland stenotopes (on present evidence) whereas Lombok endemics tend to be restricted to middle, elevations. Of the ten species known from elsewhere, only two are known from east of Lombok (from Komodo). The others are from the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Madura, and Hong Kong.

Zeugophora javana sp, n. is described from West Java and placed in the subgenus Pedrillia. Diagnostic characters are given to separate Z. javana from other species in Australia.

Abstract

Trachypharynx cibodasi sp.n. a new strongylid from a rat, Rattus tiomanicusfrom Cibodas-West Java, lndonesia is described. It differs from other species of Trachypharynx in having less number corona radiata internal elements (20), smaller body measurements and esophageal structure.
