Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of sweet potato leaf extracts from several varieties as an antihypertensive functional beverage. The study used an experimental method with a completely randomized design to evaluate the effect of sweet potato leaf varieties (Sukuh, AC, Ungu, and Cilembu) on the organoleptic characteristics and nutritional analysis of sweet potato leaf extracts. The analyses included an organoleptic test (acceptance test using a 1–9 scale) and chemical analyses (proximate composition, potassium content, and DPPH antioxidant activity). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Panelists preferred Cilembu sweet potato leaf extract to the other varieties, but there were no differences in preference for color, aroma, taste, and viscosity. The highest potassium content was found in Sukuh sweet potato leaf extract (72.27 mg/200 mL), while Ungu sweet potato leaf extract had the highest antioxidant activity (840.92 mg/100 g AEAC). The nutritional contributions of the beverage per serving (200 mL) to energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and potassium requirements were 3.66%, 2.09%, 1.18%, 5.63%, and 1.22%, respectively, of the RDA for adult women aged 19–29 years. The results indicate that sweet potato leaf extract has potential as an antihypertensive functional beverage. Keywords: antihypertensive, functional beverage, sweet potato leaves

Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and can be influenced by sodium intake and stress levels. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sodium intake, stress levels, and blood pressure among production department employees at PT Eurochair Internusa. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted, involving 74 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Sodium intake was assessed using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), stress levels were measured using the DASS-21 questionnaire, and blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results showed a significant association between sodium intake and systolic blood pressure (p=0.003; r=0.344), but not with diastolic blood pressure (p=0.379; r=0.104). Stress levels were not associated with systolic blood pressure (p=0.336; r=0.113), but showed a significant association with diastolic blood pressure (p<0.001; r=0.407). These findings indicate that limiting dietary sodium and managing occupational stress are critical preventive strategies for blood pressure control among industrial production workers. Keywords: blood pressure, employees, hypertension, sodium intake, stress

Abstract

Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease with a continuously increasing prevalence, including among young adults. Coffee consumption and smoking behavior are lifestyle factors suspected to be associated with increased blood pressure. This study aimed to analyze the association of coffee consumption and smoking behavior with blood pressure among male students at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 46 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data on coffee consumption and smoking behavior were collected using questionnaires, while blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Most respondents were categorized as moderate coffee drinkers (71.7%), light-to-moderate smokers (84.8%), and had normal blood pressure (52.2%). Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test and Fisher’s exact test. The results showed no significant association between coffee consumption (p = 0.774) or smoking behavior (p = 0.418) and blood pressure. It was concluded that coffee consumption and smoking behavior were not significantly associated with blood pressure in this population. Keywords: coffee consumption, smoking behavior, blood pressure, hypertension, students

Abstract

Hypertension is a public health problem associated with central obesity, muscle strength, and dietary patterns. This study aimed to analyse the associations of waist circumference, handgrip strength, and adherence to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet with blood pressure among pre-elderly and elderly hypertensive patients at the Hortus Medicus Jamu Research Centre, Tawangmangu. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from a parent study conducted in August–September 2024. Of 100 patient records, 85 met the inclusion criteria and were analysed. Waist circumference was measured using an anthropometric tape, handgrip strength using a handgrip dynamometer on the dominant hand, blood pressure using a digital sphygmomanometer, and dietary adherence using a DASH score. Univariate and bivariate analyses used the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test, stratified by sex, at a 95% confidence level. Most respondents had central obesity (70.6%), suboptimal systolic blood pressure (89.4%), and low DASH diet adherence (51.8%). None of the three variables was significantly associated with systolic blood pressure (p > 0.05). A significant association was found only between handgrip strength and diastolic blood pressure among women (p = 0.034). Handgrip strength may serve as a cardiometabolic risk indicator among pre-elderly and elderly women. Keywords: blood pressure; DASH diet, elderly, handgrip strength, waist circumference
