Abstract

This study investigates the symbolic meanings within the concepts of jagad gedhe and jagad cilik in Javanese society, emphasizing the harmonization of human relationships with others and the environment. A qualitative descriptive method based on literature studies was employed, utilizing Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbols. Data were collected through reading and note-taking, and their validity was ensured through source triangulation. The findings reveal that the concepts of jagad gedhe (macrocosm) and jagad cilik (microcosm) underscore the importance of balance among humans, their peers, and nature. By applying symbolic philosophy, these concepts provide practical solutions such as promoting positive cultural expressions, considering socio-ecological impacts, and fostering sustainable development. The study emphasizes that human life harmonization can be achieved by cultivating ethical awareness through cultural symbolic meanings. Practical implications include balanced human-nature relationships, promoting cultural values, and supporting sustainability as the foundation of ethical living.

Abstract

The escalating Palestine-Israel conflict has captured global attention, especially within digital public spaces. This study analyzes public communication regarding the conflict through Habermas' public sphere theory, focusing on platform X as a digital discussion arena. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, combining literature reviews and online observations on platform X. Findings reveal that platform X serves as a key medium for individuals and institutions to express opinions and share information about the conflict. Dominant hashtags such as #FreePalestine and #FreeGaza reflect widespread global concern. However, platform X imposes content moderation, limiting freedom of expression and indicating a lack of communication democracy in the digital public sphere. This study highlights the importance of fostering inclusive and unrestricted public spaces that align with Habermas' principles of democratic communication.

Abstract

Mentawai traditional tattoos are often claimed to be the oldest in the world, sparking debates among academics and controversies within the Mentawai community. This study aims to evaluate such claims by analyzing their theoretical and empirical foundations. A qualitative descriptive method was used, incorporating literature reviews from various sources, including Ady Rosa's thesis and prior research reports. The findings reveal that, while Mentawai tattoos are among the oldest traditions characterized by simple motifs and unique techniques, no historical evidence supports the claim that they are the oldest globally. This conclusion underscores the need for critical examination of cultural claims to prevent misinterpretation or misuse in public policy. The study emphasizes that while Mentawai tattoos hold significant historical and aesthetic value, the assertion of their primacy as the oldest tattoos lacks scientific support.

Abstract

This study examines the potential and impact of Virtual Reality (VR), focusing on Apple's Vision Pro innovation. A phenomenological approach was employed to analyze the social and cultural implications of VR adoption through surveys, interviews, and online observations. Findings reveal that while VR holds significant potential in education and communication, its adoption in Indonesia faces barriers due to limited public understanding. Vision Pro blurs the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds, raising ethical and social challenges. Using Paul Virilio's concept of dromology, the study evaluates the rapid technological acceleration that influences identity and social interactions. The study concludes that public awareness and appropriate supervision are essential to ensure the safe and beneficial use of VR. Technologies like Vision Pro have immense potential, but their management must address social and cultural implications to mitigate negative impacts.

Abstract

The song "Judi" by Rhoma Irama critiques gambling through its preaching and social criticism. Released during the New Order era, it highlights the negative impacts of widespread gambling on individuals and communities. This study examines the intersection of preaching messages and social expressions in the song's lyrics using a sociolinguistic approach. The research employs qualitative methods, analyzing social, cultural, and linguistic aspects. Findings indicate that the song critiques the moral and financial harm caused by gambling. Culturally, it emphasizes values such as hard work and integrity. Linguistically, Rhoma Irama uses simple yet persuasive language, making the preaching message accessible to all audiences. The song delivers a strong religious message, prohibiting gambling while highlighting its detrimental effects on life and faith. In conclusion, "Judi" serves not only as social criticism but also as a preaching medium, remaining relevant today by promoting moral and religious values in society.
