Abstract

The high rate of child marriage in Indonesia, largely driven by out-of-wedlock pregnancies, has presented a series of complex challenges for the men involved. These individuals face significant emotional, social, and economic pressures, including demands to drop out of school and the risk of experiencing depression and loneliness. Additionally, child marriages are often prone to divorce and domestic violence (DV), primarily due to the lack of emotional maturity and poor communication between partners. This study aims to explore the narrative of decision-making during marriage among men who married at a young age due to out-of-wedlock pregnancies. Through in-depth interviews with three informants who experienced child marriage, this research examines how communication influences the decision to marry at a young age, as well as the decisions made throughout the marriage. The study employs Labov's narrative analysis method to delve into and understand this process. The results of this study show that decision-making among men who marry at a young age involves a series of stages, whether in facing premarital pregnancy, economic crises, family planning, or decisions regarding domestic violence (DV) and divorce. Initially, they experience confusion and uncertainty, but with pressure from family and financial situations, they take steps to adapt to their new responsibilities. Decisions to marry and face economic challenges are made through cooperation and open communication with their partners. In terms of family planning, wives tend to take a more dominant role, while husbands support them through full trust. Furthermore, the rejection of DV and divorce reflects an awareness that conflicts can be resolved through patience and thoughtful discussion, indicating a commitment to the continuity of marriage.

Abstract

Long distance marriage is prone to triggering more complex problems if compared to marriages entered into in the same or close geographical conditions or distance. Especially for married couples who are in long distance marriage that crossing the countries, it will certainly be more complicated because it will impact the intensity and quality of communication between the two, considering that there are differences in time zones and the activities that each of they had. Particularly for couples who have just entered the first 0-5 years of marriage, this condition adding risk to the complexity of the conflicts that occur. This research aims to describe in depth how conflict management strategies are carried out by married couples who are in long distance marriage across countries using Conflict Mode Instrument Theory as the main theory, as well as The Interactional View and Relational Dialectics Theory as supporting theories. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and interpretive paradigm, while the data collection technique used is in-depth interviews. The results of this research showed that the conflict management of long-distance married couples is basically the same as that of live-in couples, but there are differences in the conflict escalation which is greater and more complex. In this study, 2 (two) types of responses were found that emerged during the initial conflict, namely silence and efforts to open up. It can also be seen that all couples seek conflict management with collaboration and compromise, although at the beginning of the conflict there was a temporary avoidance attitude by some informants which then made things worse. The challenges that arise in conflict management efforts are caused by 3 (three) main things, namely the difference in time zones, the husband's busy schedule, and technical signal disruptions that affect the intensity and quality of communication between spouses. Limitations in the distribution of affection and biological needs are also a challenge for couples and it is not uncommon for this to trigger conflict. There are 2 (two) effects of the presence of conflict felt by couples, namely being able to introspect themselves and understand each other better. However, these results only apply in this study and are not necessarily the same as the experiences of other couples in general because differences in couples' responses and conflict management are influenced by internal factors (character) and external (time, opportunity, conditions).

Abstract

Suicide is still considered a taboo topic for discussion, and victims or survivors of suicide often face negative stigma from society. This stigma can be formed or reinforced through media reporting, which serves as a primary source of information. Reporting on suicide attempts and actions that is not handled carefully can also trigger copycat suicide phenomena among vulnerable groups, particularly adolescents. Adolescents and young adults are the most at-risk population for suicide. Detik.com views suicide as an important issue to address, but it is crucial to pay attention to the quality and ethics of reporting, especially in relation to the sensitivity of journalists toward suicide reporting ethics. This study aims to analyze how Detik.com frames its reporting on suicide and to identify potential ethical violations in the coverage of suicide actions and attempts among adolescents. One article published during the period of January 2023 to December 2023 was selected based on three dominant narratives and analyzed using the Zhongdang Pan and Kosicki framing model. This analysis includes four elements: syntactic structure, script structure, thematic structure, and rhetorical structure. The theory used in this research is the Social Responsibility Theory and the Ethical Guidelines for Suicide Reporting. The results of the study show that there are seven frames used by Detik.com in reporting on suicide victims, namely: (1) a quiet person, (2) someone experiencing romantic issues, (3) someone who is always determined to die and lacks consideration, (4) experiencing depression or mental disorders, (5) displaying strange and puzzling behavior, (6) suicide victims by hanging, and (7) suicide victims by jumping. Ethically, the frequently violated points are points 1, 4, 9, and 14 from the Suicide Action and Attempt Reporting Guidelines from the Press Council. These violations indicate that the news is presented sensationally, spreading myths about suicide, stigmatizing the victim, and providing excessive detail about the suicide event.

Abstract

This research is based on the idea that there has not yet been an Indonesian film featuring a female superhero main character with local cultural values. The film "Sri Asih," which premiered on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform, seeks to embody the hybridity of Girl Power through Indonesia's first superhero character, aiming to introduce a new alternative related to the identity of female superheroes and to serve as a form of resistance. However, there is a possibility that the strength displayed by the character Sri Asih may not fully resist but rather still reflects residues of dominant ideologies, given that the superhero film genre is highly profitable for the film industry. This study utilizes theories of girl power, cultural hybridity, and representation. The method employed is descriptive qualitative research with a critical paradigm and a critical discourse analysis approach following Sara Mills' framework. The research findings indicate that femininity and hybridity can be strengths and weaknesses in shaping the character of female superhero. Character analysis shows that the character embodies aspects of Girl Power by celebrating femininity, enjoying empowerment, being independent, and having agency to make choices. However, the character also demonstrates that anger and emotionality can be weaknesses attributed to women. The appearance (costume) of the superhero character demonstrates that cultural hybridity can present a new strength in forming the identity of female superheroes. However, the character's weapon is still influenced by cultural appropriation, where despite being part of Javanese culture, the function and logic of the scarf's power still resemble Western weapons. The fragmentation of the female body that emphasizes physical strength shows resistance against the stigma of the female body being considered passive, soft, and commodified, although it is not entirely free from the male gaze. Fragmentation of the face that emphasizes the pleasure of seeing Sri Asih's beauty illustrates a contradiction in portraying Indonesian superhero beauty with Western beauty standards. Focalization indicates that the character Sri Asih as a superhero has not yet fully become the subject of her desire to become a superhero, and her lineage remains crucial in bringing out female strength. Schemata analysis shows that although the character Sri Asih demonstrates femininity and hybridity as strengths through several aspects, the character still shows that women are "the other," and the cultural hybridity embodied through the identity of Sri Asih has not yet fully resisted the hegemony of dominant ideologies

Abstract

Women with experiences of sexual violence are often viewed as individuals who cannot rise and live their lives as they did before. This perception stems from a patriarchal ideology that oppresses women through sexual violence, causing women who have experienced such actions to be seen as degraded, inferior, and impure. However, Gina S. Noer, as the writer and director, along with Chand Parwez Servia, the producer of the film Like & Share (2022), strive to show how women can break free from these oppressive thoughts by portraying female survivors of sexual violence who are able to recover and find meaning in their traumatic experiences. The research titled ‘The Representation of Female Survivors of Sexual Violence in the Film Like & Share (2022)’ aims to describe female survivors and the actualization of Gina and Chand's statements regarding the film through the lens of critical theory: gender and race in organizational communication and the muted group theory. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a critical paradigm and Schleiermacher's hermeneutic analysis approach. The research results show that the character Sarah experiences rape and Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV), while Fita faces OGBV. Both have gone through various stages, ultimately reaching the stage of acceptance as female survivors of sexual violence. Character analysis reveals that Sarah goes through stages of denial, depression, problem-solving, and acceptance, while Fita goes through stages of anger, problem-solving, and acceptance. Furthermore, the hermeneutics of the message conveyed by Gina and Chand regarding female survivors of sexual violence in the film Like & Share is also successfully actualized through scenes in the film that depict female as survivors of sexual violence who are able to heal and accept themselves despite having to overcome various obstacles in society.

Abstract

The cyanide coffee case in 2016 resulted in the death of Wayan Mirna Salihin, and Jessica Wongso had to serve a 20-year prison sentence. In 2023, the documentary Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso appeared, which raised the story and became a hot topic of conversation among the public. The purpose of this study was to find out how the Jessica Wongso murder case is represented in the film Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso. This study uses a qualitative approach with John Fiske's Semiotic analysis method at three levels, namely: reality, representation, and ideology. This analysis includes how the film depicts events, characters, and narratives that can influence the audience's perception of Jessica as the accused. The results of this study show First, how the media shapes public opinion towards Jessica Wongso. Through CCTV footage, interviews, and reconstructions of events that display certain narratives that emphasize the mystery and doubt about Jessica's guilt. Second, cinematic techniques such as camera angles, lighting, and background music to create tension strengthen the narrative that is being conveyed. Third, the narrative in this film suggests that Jessica may be a victim of injustice in the legal system and the media, where the film questions whether justice has truly been served. And finally, the media has a great influence in shaping public opinion, which as depicted in the media in this film emphasizes how a suspect can be perceived based on the social construction formed by the media.

Abstract

Online gambling transactions in Indonesia have increased significantly, despite the fact that such activities are prohibited by Indonesian law. Surveys indicate that the majority of the population is aware of the presence of online gambling advertisements spread across the internet and social media, and many have friends who are involved in online gambling. These findings suggest that despite the legal ban on gambling, various social and technological factors encourage people to remain engaged in such activities. This study aims to examine the influence of exposure to online gambling advertisements and the intensity of communication with peers on the interest in online gambling. The research adopts a quantitative explanatory approach, based on assumptions from cognitive response theory and social learning theory, using non-probability sampling techniques with purposive sampling methods. Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents, consisting of males and females aged 18–43 years, residing in Central Java, who have seen online gambling advertisements and have acquaintances or friends who engage in online gambling. The results show that exposure to online gambling advertisements has a negative influence on the interest in online gambling, while the intensity of peer communication has a positive influence on the interest. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that exposure to online gambling advertisements and the intensity of communication with peers are two significant factors influencing interest in online gambling.

Abstract

Currently, brands worldwide are engaging in sustainability campaigns as part of their green marketing strategies. Uniqlo, a leading fast fashion company, has initiated a sustainability campaign titled "The Power of Clothing," which has been disseminated through its official social media channels. However, Uniqlo's transparency index still ranks below its competitors. Additionally, there are several obstacles to the effectiveness of the campaign, such as the emergence of negative consumer attitudes toward fast fashion and skepticism regarding greenwashing. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 respondents using purposive sampling techniques. The study employs computer-mediated communication theory and cognitive dissonance theory. The research findings from a simple linear regression test indicate that the perceived informativeness of the "The Power of Clothing" campaign (X1) has a significant effect on the perception of Uniqlo as a green brand. The direction coefficient of the regression shows a positive influence of 0.452. Meanwhile, the results of the multiple linear regression test indicate that there is no significant effect of attitudes toward fast fashion and greenwashing on the perception of Uniqlo as a green brand.

Abstract

The Babarsari “Gotham city” ethnic conflict was a conflict involving immigrant ethnic groups, mainly from Eastern Indonesia. The conflict created significant social tensions and affected interactions between local and migrant communities. It created social distance and increased negative stereotypes between the two groups of different ethnicities. As a result, migrants face challenges in adjusting to local norms and values. This then makes a new problem for other immigrant communities to adapt communication with local communities. This research aims to find out the communication adaptation process of immigrant communities in reducing concerns in the Babarsari “Gotham city” conflict by using descriptive qualitative research methods. The data collection technique used is in depth interview. The theories used in this research are integrative communication theory, communication accommodation theory, and adaptation interaction theory. The results of this study explain that the communication adaptation of migrant communities in Sleman, Yogyakarta after the Babarsari Ethnic Conflict “Gotham City” shows that changes in communication behavior by informants by actively participating in social and cultural activities that function as communication accommodation. The results of this study explained that the importance of communication accommodation theory in understanding the dynamics of interaction between immigrant and local communities after ethnic conflict occurred by strengthening social relations and creating harmony in the community.
