Abstract

The main purposes of the research were to support taxonomic evidence data in particular of palinology spesies classified inMyristicaceae family at Java and determine phenetic relationship as an effort of increasing objectivity and repeatability of classification result. Pollen was collected in Herbarium Bogoriense and Bogor Botanical Garden, and prepared for light and Scanning Electron Microscope. Acetolysis method was used for light microscopy of the pollen preparation, and coating with gold was prepared for SEM. Abstract

Pinanga coronata is one of palms species that has complex characters in morphology, because distribution of the species isvery diverse. In the wild, P. coronata is found throughout Java and Bali, occuring on lowland forest to montane forest at altitude 1.900 m asl. This paper presents leaf anatomy observation on 21 samples from different localities and altitudes throughout Java and Bali. Observation results show that all samples have simillar form and structure of epidermis cells and stomata, so the results gave evidence that leaf anatomy observation has simillar results with morphological observation of this species.© 2003 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: leaf epiderm structure, Pinanga coronata, Java, Bali

Abstract

Baron beach is a specific habitat due its characteristic as a narrow beach with outlet of sub-surface rivers. This researchhad been done in order to know its microbial characteristic. Research used survey method and bacterial identification wasdone based on comparative description. The research showed that during high tide of seawater, the total bacterial countwas 1.0 to 6.0 x 107 cfu/ml on NA and 2.0 to 7.0 x 107 cfu/ml on NA+0.5% NaCl. Furthermore, during the low tide of seawater, the total bacterial count was 1.4 to 8.8 x 108 cfu/ml on NA, and 3.2 to 9.0 106 cfu/ml on NA+0,5% NaCl. This studyfound 14 genera of bacteria and dominated by Gram-negative bacteria. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to study the genetic variation and allozyme band pattern of Pristipomoides multidens from several locations of Indonesian sea based on the pattern of allozyme. Samples of the fish were collected from three geographically different water areas of Bali, Sumbawa and Moluccas. Ten different enzymes, ADH, MDH, LDH, α-GPD,PGM, GPI, IDH, ME, EST and SP were used in this study. Polymorphic loci of genetic variation were in line with the Hardy-Weinberg’s equilibrium. The genetic variation was calculated based on the proportion of polymorphic loci, frequency ofallele, amount of allele per locus, and heterozygosity. The results of this research indicate that from the 10 differentenzymes, 16 loci were detected, and 3 of them were polymorphic (PGM-1, GPI-1 and EST). Population of Moluccas has 2 polymorphic loci (PGM-1 and GPI-1) by proportion of 13%, however, population from Bali and Sumbawa has only 1polymorphic locus (EST-1) with the value of 6%. The allelic number per locus was 1.06 – 1.125, while the observedheterozygosity (D) of the populations was 0.005. The fish population of Moluccas is having better genetic variation than that of population from Bali and Sumbawa. The genetic distance between populations was between 0.002 – 0.005. The closestgenetic distance is between Bali and Sumbawa (D = 0,002), while the longest genetic distance was resulted betweenpopulations of Sumbawa and Moluccas (D = 0.005). Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis for the genetic distances,indicated that there was 2 main geographic groups, (1) Moluccas, and (2) Bali and Sumbawa as single population.© 2003 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: allozyme, genetic variation, Pristipomoides multidens.

Abstract

Muara Kendawangan Nature Reserve is one of the biggest nature reserves in West Kalimantan. However, data andinformations especially floras diversity and its potential in this area has not been investigated intensively. Two hundred andnineteen species of plant are collected from this area, and 140 species of them are reported as potential plants. Fourty eight, and fourty two species of the potential species are respectively useful as timber and medicinal plants. Abstract

The objectives of this research were to monitoring natural food of Sumatran elephant; determine rank taxonomy of species,and to give information quantitative value of taxa for vegetation analysis. The wide of area total Taman Hutan Raya Cut Nya’ Dhien Seulawah were 6.220 Ha. About 20% of area total used as an observed area. The data was collected bytransect and quadratic plot method. The observed area it was took 10 transect with 500 m of long for observed station.Each observed station was put seven and ten plot samples systematically. Each plot samples has a 5 m2 of width. Theresult indicated that there were 69 species of the plant including 23 families. Diversity index was between 1.9838-2.7202;an evenness index was between 1.6868-2.0631. The importance value is relatively low on all station observed. The refer of importance value show that Oplismenus burmanii, Imperata cylindrica, Crassocephalum crepidiodes, Mimosa pudica, and Zingiber aquosum were dominated on secondary forest and Zingiber zerumbet, Zingiber purpureum, and Oplismenus burmanii were dominated on primary forest. The result of diversity index show that regeneration of natural food in Taman Hutan Raya Cut Nya’ Dhien Seulawah is available constant because grazing occurred with continue by elephant.© 2003 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: elephant, Taman Hutan Raya, importance value, diversity index.

Abstract

Birds can be used indirectly or directly as a bioindicator of environment. Birds species living in six habitat types of PTInhutani I Labanan Kalimantan Timur (namely, logged-over areas that has been exploited in 1976/1981 and 1981/1986,forested area that is being exploited in 1999/2000, primary forest that will be exploited in 2001/2002, Labanan Jaya Villageinhabited in 1982/1983, and Segah-Malinau Transmigration Settlement inhabited in 1997/1998) were recorded with transectmethod (long of 3 km and within sighting distance of 25-50 m) at 06.30-10.00 and 15.00-17.30 in both dry and rainy seasons. One hundred and two identified species belonging to 34 families and 6 unidentified species were found. Habitat types and seasons affect bird diversity (the number of species and abundance). Percent dissimilarity of birds between habitats ranged 0,53-0,95 in rainy season and 0,54-0,95 in dry season and between seasons ranged 0,50-0,80. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to study on habitat distribution and the diversity of forest plants as feed resources of mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) and barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak) was conducted in Nature Preserve ofNusakambangan. Preferred Habitat of mouse deer is the dense of bushes with many fallen dry leaves which seemingly theyuse for their mattress cover as well as the places with bush dense of zalacca palm and generally not far from the river.While the barking deer prefers the dense of bushes on the edges of forest with coarse grass grow there. Abstract

Nepenthes gracilis and Drocera burmannii are rare species, found at Padang Pinang Anyang, Belitung island . These unique plants are also known as insectivorous species. Field observation was conducted on June, 2002. The number ofpopulation of N. gracilis and D.burmanii as well as identification of plants associated with have been carried out. Six transects, 50 x 5 m2 in each transect were established, of which one transect consists of 10 small 5 x 5 m2 plots. All plant species in plots were identified. The degree association is computed by contingency table 2x2 while distribution type is considered by variant. As the result, 19 species have recorded including grass species (44%), shrub (28%), tree (19%), and insectivorous plants (9%). Abstract

The coastal area of Baron, Kukup, and Krakal in the southern coast of Yogyakarta is an arid and dried area, and marginalagriculture land. The potential vegetation resources only live on the lands that produce cassava, corn, peanut, and soybean. The increasing benefits of sea products such as fishes still need to be invented. The aims of this research are to inventories and to increase the use of disadvantage resources. This research was conducted from October 1995 to March 1996. The result invents 70 species of useful plants and 21 species of weed that can be used by the people for the needs of their own households. The remainder products of Anona squamosa L., which might easily rot and until now unprofitable, could be used to make some jam. Phylantus emblica L. can be put into a useful product by making them to become candies. Another natural resources that are neglected are the cattle excrement and sharkskin. All kind of sharkskin’s can be manufactured into leather products. While cattle excrement can be produced methane for cooking and lighting. There are 163 species of ornamental fishes in Kukup, and 20 species of consumed fishes in Baron. In search of ornamental fishes, the fishermen have a bad-habit of using hazardous materials such as potassium cyanide. Besides endangers the reef communities, algae and fish-larvae, it makes the ornamental fishes they caught unhealthy and cannot be exported since their lifespan is very short.
