Abstract

The physiological character, especially the effect of pH and organic substrate on the growth and activity of some ammoniaoxidizing bacteria was carried out. The results show that eight out of twenty isolates have ability to reduce ammonium, two of them i.e. isolate AOB1 and AOB2 could reduce more than 90% of ammonium. The growth and activity to reduce ammonium to nitrite was attained optimum at pH 7-8. From the result also indicated that the growth and activity of both isolate AOB1 and AOB2 were higher on the organic carbon (acetate)-containing media. Abstract

Research about species description of Rhizophoraceae family in mangrove forest at Baluran National Park was conducted from June to October 2003. The method were plot and survey. There were nine species of Rhizophoraceae. The species at mangrove were Bruguiera cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, B. sexangula, Ceriops decandra, C. tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, R. lamarckii, R. mucronata, and R. stylosa. Abstract

Agricultural wastes, such as coconut meal and kernel palm meal can be used to fulfill the need of feed for ruminants ormonogastrics. Fermentation technology using Aspergillus niger has been reported allow to increase their nutritive value.Isolation of the asporogenous strain which could spored at room temperature but could not spored at 37oC is expected to sole the fermentation of spores in the fermentation product. The spore formation of mutants at the fourth day incubationtime (10%) was less than the wild type (100%). The variance analysis of protein content in vitro Dry Matter Digestibility (IVDMD) and in vitro Protein Digestibility (IVPD) showed that the kind of mutants were interacted with the incubation time(P<0,01). The highest protein content of coconut meal was obtained from E27 mutant (33.0%), kernel palm meal wasobtained from E14 mutant (31.4%) at the fourth day of incubation time. The highest IVDMD of coconut meal (62.1%), kernel palms meal (61.8%) at the fourth day incubation time and from all E27 mutant. The highest IVPD of coconut meal was obtained from E27 mutant (20.49%) at the fourth day incubation time, kernel palm meal was obtained from E27 mutant (18.66%) at the fourth days incubation time.© 2004 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeywords: mutant Aspergillus niger, coconut meal, kernel palm meal, fermentation

Abstract

The selection of appropriate rattan for a certain use must be based on adequate information about its potency, anatomicalstructure, and chemical properties. Standards methods of inventory development by Curtis method was used to obtain data on its density and frequency. To know the anatomical structure of preparation were made according to Schultze method and microtome preparation according to Staining Paraffin Section with Safranin. While to know the chemical component of rattan stem the analyzed by Standard Industry Indonesia procedures. Calamus occidentalis is one among other Java rattan species which its distribution is limited in the area of Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java. C. occidentalis may be utilized for various purposes based on the following characteristics: species density of 21 cane/ha; and anatomical structure: fiber length of 2204 μm, fiber-wall thickness of 4.26 μm, vascular bundle diameter of 812.5 μm, metaxylem diameter of 293.75 μm, proxylem diameter of 43.5 μm, and phloem diameter of 37.5 μm. Its chemical components are cellulose (49.95%), lignin (22.39%), and air-dry moisture (12.27%). Based on the above information, C. occidentalis rattan species possibly can be used as an alternative substitute of Calamus manan, an endangered rattan species, because several properties of C. occidentalis has similar with that of C. manan.© 2004 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeywords: commercial-value, possible utilization, Calamus occidentalis

Abstract

Mount Kelud is an upper shed Brantas area which has high potential plant diversity. But the land in that upper shed hadexperienced much erosion. Beside erosion process, human disturbances in the resort added the burdens to the existenceof the vegetation. That is why the existence and condition of the plants must be monitored and studied. Assessment of theplants was conducted through literature studies, field surveys and using quadrate plot methods Oosting (Kent & Paddy,1992) 0.75 ha each at different altitudes (600 m, 800 m and 1000 m) above sea level. The results showed that a totalnumber of 125 species belonging to 94 genera, and 49 families were recorded. Abstract

Bukit Tapak (1903 m) the natural reserve of Batukau I (816.4 ha) is one of three natural reserve area of Batukau (1762.8ha, 1974). Located at the tourism object of Bedugul, the eastern part boundaries to the Botanic Garden Eka Karya-LIPI(154.5 ha, 1959) and settlement of Candikuning area (1152 family, 4475 persons) and near the three lakes of the waterresources of Bali; Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan lake. The special plants; cemara geseng (Casuarina junghuhniana Miq.),cemara pandak (Dacrycarpus imbricatus (Blume) de Laub.), nyabah (Pinanga arinasaensis J.R. Witono), paku kidang(Dicksonia blumei Planch.), and purnajiwa (Euchresta horsfieldii (Lesch.) Benth.). The pioneer plant of the hill is cemara geseng and the endemic is cemara pandak. The plant of needle leaves that basically the existence of Bali Botanical Garden as the conservation ex situ flora of noodle leaves especially at the eastern Indonesian area. Nyabah, which is supposed to be the new kind of palm named Arinasa, driven from the staff name who is the pioneer of the conservation. Paku kidang is rare. There are ethnobotany plants of ritual ceremony such as: kayu tulak (Schefflera sp.), kayu tulung (Brasaia sp.), penjalin (Calamus sp.), paku pidpid (Nephrolepis sp.), trijata (Medinilla speciosa (Blume ex Mart.) Blume), etc. Balinese people believe that forest is holly and sacred. But because of the existence of Pura Teratai Bang (16 century) at the slope, moslem cemetery (found in 1938) at the peak, and other needs (climbing, food, medicine, etc.), it can not be avoided the entrances of people that caused the forest is damaged. The forest reservation needs the approach to the local people, so the solution are morally and integration. Abstract

An experiment on the effect of microbe as fertilizer on the growth of Acacia mangium on the sand sterile in greenhouse. The aim of the experiment the effect and potency of the microbe as fertilizer to increase the growth of A. mangium. The experiment was carried out in green house condition in Microbiology division, Research Center for Biology-LIPI with sterile sand medium. The Rhizobium strains used of: 1.Bio 199R, 2. Bio 203R, 3. Bio 205R, 4 Bio 238R, 5. Bio 251R, 6.Bio 7R, and 7. mixed strains (Bio 199R+Bio 203R+Bio 205R+Bio 238R+Bio 251R+Bio 7R) The controls were uninoculated withRhizobium strain and without urea fertilizer (K1), uninoculated and with urea fertilizer equal 100 kg/ha (K2). The researchdesign was Completely Randomized Design with three replications for each treatment. The plants were harvested after 70 days; the parameters of investigation were the dry weight of canopy, roots, nodules root, total plants, number of nodules and “symbiotic capacity”. The results showed that all of experiment plant able to from nodule. Abstract

The Malesian genus Koilodepas Hassk. has been revised based on the morphological and anatomical character using available herbarium collection in Herbarium Bogoriense and loan specimens from Kew Herbarium and Leiden Rijksherbarium. The present study is based on the observation of 176 specimens. Eight species has been recognized, namely K. bantamense, K. cordifolium, K. frutescns, K. homalifolium, K. laevigatum, K. longifolium, K. pectinatum, and two varieties within K. brevipes. The highest number of species is found in Borneo (5 species), three of them are found endemically in Borneo, K. cordisepalum endemically in Aceh, and K. homalifolium endemically in Papua New Guinea. A phylogenetic analysis of the genus, with Cephalomappa as outgroup, show that the species within the genus Koilodepas isin one group, starting with K. brevipes as a primitive one and K. bantamense occupies in an advance position.© 2004 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeyword: Koilodepas Hassk., Malesia, outgroup, phylogenetic analysis, outgroup

Abstract

Dipterocarpaceae is one of the biggest family with >500 species in the world, and most of dipterocarps population aregrown in Indonesia which have high economical value of wood. One of the most important value from dipterocarps species is high on endemicities; there are up to 128 species (53.78%) from 238 dipterocarps species in Indonesia. Distribution of dipterocarps species would be affected by some factors especially edaphic, climate, and altitude. In Indonesia the dipterocarps species distribution could be shown from islands groups, number of species and forest types. Based on the observation of herbarium collection in Herbarium Bogoriense the distribution of the most dipterocarps species was in the altitude of 0-500 m and 500-1000 m on the dipterocarps forest type. Abstract

Acacia nilotica (L.) Del. is a thorny wattle native in India, Pakistan and much of Africa. This acacia is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Africa from Agypt and Mauritania to South Africa. In Africa and the Indian Subcontinent, Acacianilotica is extensively used as browse, timber and fire-wood species. The bark and seeds are used as source of tannins.The species is olso used for medicinal purposes. Bark of Acacia nilotica has been used for treathing haemorrhages, colds, diarrhoea, tuberculosis and leprosy; while the roots have been used as an aphrodisiac and the flowers for treathing syphillis lessions. The invasion of Acacia nilotica has resulted in the reduction of savanna in Baluran National Park reaching about 50%.
