Abstract

The rise of ride-hailing platforms has significantly transformed the labor market in Indonesia, especially within the gig economy. As a rapidly growing sector, these platforms offer flexible work opportunities, attracting millions of workers. However, the impact of ride-hailing on the livelihoods and social welfare of gig economy workers remains understudied. This research aims to explore how ride-hailing platforms influence the income stability, social security, and overall well-being of gig workers in Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach was used for this study, combining surveys and in-depth interviews with 300 gig workers from major cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. The survey collected quantitative data on income patterns, job satisfaction, and access to social benefits, while qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the social and psychological effects of gig work. The findings indicate that while ride-hailing platforms offer a source of income and flexible working hours, they also expose workers to income instability, lack of social protection, and job insecurity. Only 15% of workers reported having access to formal social security benefits, with many relying on informal networks for support. Additionally, mental health concerns were prevalent due to the unpredictable nature of gig work and the absence of a supportive work environment. The study concludes that while ride-hailing platforms offer significant economic opportunities, there is an urgent need for policy reforms that address workers' rights, social security, and job security to ensure the sustainability of their livelihoods and well-being.

Abstract

Background. The digital divide remains a significant challenge, particularly in rural communities, where limited access to technology and digital resources exacerbates educational inequities. While the first-level digital divide focuses on access to technology, the second-level digital divide addresses disparities in digital literacy the ability to effectively use digital tools to enhance learning. This study explores the effectiveness of digital literacy interventions in rural communities and their impact on educational outcomes. Purpose. The primary objective of this research is to assess how targeted digital literacy programs can improve students’ learning experiences and academic performance in rural areas. Method. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis of academic performance data with qualitative interviews from students, teachers, and community stakeholders. Results. The findings reveal that digital literacy interventions significantly enhance students' technological proficiency, with improvements in both their academic performance and engagement with digital learning platforms. However, the study also identifies challenges related to the sustainability of these programs and the need for continuous support. Conclusion. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of bridging the second-level digital divide through comprehensive digital literacy initiatives, which can help mitigate educational disparities in rural communities and contribute to long-term improvements in educational equity.

Abstract

Background. The rise of fintech and digital financial services has transformed access to finance, particularly for underserved populations. However, concerns have emerged regarding the potential for digital credit scoring algorithms to either facilitate inclusion or perpetuate exclusion, especially for the urban poor. In many developing countries, these algorithms are being used to assess creditworthiness, but their reliance on big data, social media activity, and other non-traditional factors raises questions about fairness and transparency. Purpose. This study aims to evaluate the impact of digital credit scoring algorithms on access to finance for the urban poor, focusing on whether these algorithms contribute to financial inclusion or exclusion. Method. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis from fintech platforms with qualitative interviews from urban poor individuals in Indonesia. Results. The findings reveal that while digital credit scoring has improved access to financial products for some, it has also disproportionately excluded individuals with limited digital footprints or those lacking access to traditional banking systems. Conclusion. The study concludes that digital credit scoring, if not carefully regulated, risks exacerbating financial inequality. Policy recommendations include enhancing transparency, addressing biases in algorithmic decision-making, and ensuring greater financial literacy to bridge the digital divide.

Abstract

Background. The increasing demand for transparency in global supply chains has prompted the exploration of emerging technologies such as blockchain. In particular, the application of distributed ledger technology (DLT) in fair trade industries has the potential to enhance accountability, traceability, and ethical sourcing practices. This study examines the use of blockchain in the fair trade coffee sector, where transparency is crucial to ensure that producers receive fair compensation and consumers can trust the authenticity of ethical claims. Purpose. The primary aim of this research is to investigate how blockchain technology can improve transparency and efficiency in the coffee supply chain, from farm to consumer. Method. The study employs a case study methodology, focusing on a fair trade coffee cooperative that implemented blockchain to track the journey of coffee beans. Qualitative interviews with stakeholders, including farmers, distributors, and consumers, were conducted to gather insights into the practical applications and challenges of blockchain in this context. Results. The findings indicate that blockchain enhances transparency by providing immutable records of transactions, but challenges related to technology adoption, cost, and scalability remain. Conclusion. The study concludes that while blockchain shows promise for social good in fair trade coffee, further research and development are needed to address the limitations and expand its implementation across the industry.

Abstract

Background. This study evaluates the implementation of the Jaring Pengaman Sosial (JPS) program, focusing on vulnerable groups in urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Social protection policies are critical in addressing the needs of marginalized populations, especially during times of economic instability. However, the effectiveness and accessibility of such programs often vary significantly between urban and rural regions due to differences in infrastructure, administrative capacity, and socio-economic conditions. Purpose. The primary aim of this research is to assess the impact of JPS on urban and rural beneficiaries, examining differences in access to benefits, program satisfaction, and the specific challenges faced by each group. Method. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 500 participants (250 urban and 250 rural). Data analysis revealed that urban beneficiaries had higher satisfaction rates and better access to benefits, particularly cash transfers, while rural beneficiaries faced logistical barriers, including delays in benefit distribution and limited access to information. Results. The findings highlight significant disparities in the implementation and effectiveness of social protection programs across geographic regions. Conclusion. The study concludes that tailored interventions are necessary to ensure equitable access to benefits, particularly in rural areas, and recommends improving program delivery and targeting mechanisms to better address regional needs.
