Abstract

This article examined the conventional assumption that communism and capitalism developed as fundamentally antagonistic systems. It investigated recurring historical claims that influential financial, banking, and political actors interacted with, facilitated, or benefited from revolutionary socialist movements despite apparent ideological opposition. Using a qualitative historical-analytical approach, the study drew upon the writings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Mikhail Bakunin, elite theory, and selected historical debates concerning finance and revolution, with particular attention to the Bolshevik Revolution. The analysis found that ideological conflict alone did not adequately explain historical interactions between revolutionary socialism and influential financial interests. Instead, patterns of political, economic, and institutional centralization emerged as a recurring theme across competing interpretations. The study concluded that the relationship between communism, capitalism, and power was more complex and interconnected than conventional narratives generally suggest.

Abstract

This paper explores the notion of charitable crowdfunding, which sits at the intersection of digital technology and the Filipino value of bayanihan (community spirit).  While charitable crowdfunding is a 21st century phenomenon, it is embedded in a human value that has long been part of Filipino culture. However, there has been a lack of scholarly research on charitable crowdfunding, especially in the Philippine context—a gap which this paper seeks to address through a literature review. The authors initially provide an orientation on the concept of crowdfunding and its related theories and processes. This was followed by a discussion of trends and challenges in an international context prior to focusing on the state and key factors affecting charitable crowdfunding in the Philippines. The article concludes with the study’s implications for research and policy.
