Abstract

Bahasa Mandailing is facing a serious threat from globalization, and the major language is starving its development. As a low-resource language, preservation efforts are still limited and have not yet used digital technology systematically. On the other hand, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) opens new opportunities in documenting and revitalizing minority languages. This study aims to develop a trilingual digital dictionary (Mandailing–Indonesian–English) as a strategic effort to preserve Mandailing while simultaneously providing theoretical contributions to linguistic studies and technological applications. The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDI (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation) model. The research process includes needs analysis, dictionary entry structure design, development of a React Native/Flutter-based application prototype, and limited trials involving native speakers and university students. The study results produced an application prototype with a three-way search feature, contextual sentence examples, and systematic dictionary entries. A total of 200 basic Mandailing vocabulary words were successfully collected as an initial corpus. The trials showed that the application is easy to use, although further development is needed in the form of vocabulary expansion and the addition of audio features. These findings suggest that creating an AI trilingual digital dictionary could be vital for preserving the Mandailing language. In addition to providing a practical learning tool, this initiative promotes digital literacy, strengthens the transmission of knowledge across generations, and serves as a foundation for research and technological innovation in linguistics.

Abstract

As media become embedded in everyday life—what scholars describe as media life—the circulation of Islamic knowledge is increasingly shaped by digital infrastructures that challenge traditional forms of authority and preaching (dakwah). This study analyzes how Islamic dakwah practices evolve within media life, with particular attention to emerging forms of religious literacy shaped by digital platforms. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through netnography, the study observes online interactions, discourse production, and audience engagement across selected digital platforms, emphasizing how media affordances and algorithms mediate the circulation and reinterpretation of Islamic messages. Results: The findings demonstrate three major transformations. First, dakwah content increasingly shifts from traditional oral–textual formats to algorithmically curated digital narratives, such as short-form videos and meme-based interpretations. Second, religious literacy becomes participatory, with audiences actively remixing, reframing, and redistributing Islamic messages through comments, duets, stitches, and creative digital production. Third, online environments intensify the contestation of religious authority, as nontraditional actors—including influencers, content creators, and anonymous users—gain visibility comparable to ulama, thereby destabilizing established hierarchies of Islamic knowledge. These transformations highlight the need for renewed frameworks of religious literacy that integrate digital competence, critical awareness, and ethical engagement within contemporary Islamic communication.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of sarcastic speech acts used by netizens in the comment section of the Instagram account @fuji_an. Sarcasm in digital interactions often appears implicitly through simple utterances that actually contain hidden meanings in the form of criticism, ridicule, or insult. The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the forms of sarcastic speech acts in the comments, (2) to reveal the literal meanings and implicatures contained within them, and (3) to explain the pragmatic functions of sarcasm, particularly as insults, defamation, and provocation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through screenshots of Instagram comments, which were then observed and recorded. The data were analyzed using Searle’s speech act theory, which categorizes speech acts into five types: assertive, expressive, directive, commissive, and declarative.  The findings indicate that sarcastic speech acts by netizens most frequently appear in assertive, expressive, and directive forms. Literally, the comments appear simple, yet the implicatures reveal hidden intentions to demean or mock public figures. Pragmatically, these speech acts function as insults by belittling appearance and social environment, as defamation by damaging one’s public image, and as provocation by inciting other netizens to respond negatively. This study highlights the significant role of sarcasm in shaping public discourse on social media and contributes to the study of digital pragmatics within the context of Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Despite Indonesia’s vast linguistic landscape, the historical relationships among its regional languages—particularly between closely situated yet understudied varieties such as Tegal and Balinese—remain insufficiently explored. This research aims to examine the genetic relationship between the Tegal language and the Balinese language using a comparative historical linguistics approach. Against the backdrop of linguistic diversity in Indonesia, this study seeks to answer questions regarding phonemic correspondence patterns, lexical similarity levels, and the classification of the two languages' relationship. The research methods employed were a combination of quantitative (lexicostatistics) and qualitative (phonological analysis) approaches, focusing on 100 basic vocabularies collected through online interviews. The results show a genetic relationship with a cognate percentage of 42%, which indicates that these two languages are classified as a single language family. Based on glottochronology calculations, the Tegal and Balinese languages are estimated to have separated from a single proto-language approximately 20 centuries ago. This research contributes to mapping the relationships between regional languages in Indonesia and enriches the knowledge of comparative historical linguistics.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become essential in digital navigation systems such as Google Maps, whose Indonesian Text-to-Speech (TTS) feature still struggles with mispronouncing abbreviations, acronyms, and proper names, often producing speech that sounds unnatural or confusing. This study aims to identify the linguistic and technical causes of pronunciation errors in Google Maps’ Indonesian TTS system. This study employs a qualitative approach combining content analysis and computational linguistics. Audio samples from Google Maps were analyzed to identify recurring pronunciation issues, followed by a technical examination of phonetic modeling, text-to-phoneme conversion, and text-normalization processes within the TTS system. The results show that inaccuracies arise from three key factors: insufficient contextual recognition of abbreviations, limited lexical databases, and weaknesses in text-normalization mechanisms. These findings suggest that the challenges are not purely technical but also linguistic and sociocultural, reflecting the complexity of Indonesian with its diverse dialects, orthography, and local naming practices. The study recommends improving lexical coverage, developing more context-aware linguistic models, and training AI with voice and text data that better represent Indonesian language variation. Overall, this research contributes to the development of a more accurate, natural, and culturally attuned TTS system while underscoring the importance of integrating AI innovation with linguistic sensitivity.

Abstract

In the increasingly politicized landscape of Indonesian social media, public dissatisfaction is frequently voiced through complaint expressions, yet the pragmatic dynamics of such complaints—especially in YouTube comment sections responding to presidential statements—remain insufficiently examined. This study examines the use of complaint language by netizens in the YouTube comment section of the press statement delivered by President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace on August 31, 2025, as uploaded by the TvOneNews channel. The focus of the analysis is directed toward forms of complaint that emerge as expressions of social and political sentiment in digital spaces, using Trosborg’s (1995) theory of The Communicative Act of Complaining. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling as the data collection technique. The data consists of 50 comments confirmed to represent complaint language, which were then analyzed to identify the complaint strategies used. The findings reveal that netizen comments on social media exhibit various forms of complaint, which can be categorized into direct and indirect types. This analysis identifies eight complaint strategies, ranging from subtle hints to explicit condemnation of individuals. Each strategy reflects the speaker’s way of expressing dissatisfaction—either implicitly or assertively shaped by social context, emotional tone, and communicative intent. These findings demonstrate that complaint language in digital spaces is expressive, creative, and rich in pragmatic meaning.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed the way people communicate, one of which is through the spread of humor on social media. Memes, as a popular form of digital expression, combine simple text and images yet can simultaneously create humor and convey social messages. This phenomenon is worth studying because memes are not merely a form of entertainment but also a medium of communication that reflects people’s mindsets and digital culture. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the role of memes in delivering digital humor on social media, identify the humor strategies used in memes, and examine how memes influence audience interaction and responses. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis techniques. The data consist of meme images collected from social media platforms such as Instagram, X (Twitter), and TikTok. The selected memes were analyzed based on visual content, text, and the context of humor displayed. The findings show that memes play a significant role as a means of digital humor because they are easy to understand, spread rapidly, and can adapt to current issues. The dominant humor strategies include irony, satire, and wordplay that evoke emotional engagement from the audience. Memes are not only entertaining but also serve as an effective medium of digital communication that reflects social phenomena, fosters interpersonal connection, and strengthens the culture of humor in cyberspace.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital communication has intensified the use of emoji as multimodal resources that shape meaning beyond verbal language. This study aims (1) to analyze the functions of emoji as substitutes for words or expressions in netizen comments on Metro TV’s TikTok video reporting the case “Bima Permana, one of the three missing persons has been found,” and (2) to identify the role of emoji in conveying specific communicative intentions within these comments. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research examines the meaning, function, and contextual use of emoji in comments posted within the first 24 hours of the video’s upload, which generated more than 1,000 responses. Data were collected through documentation in the form of screenshots and transcribed comments containing emoji, and were analyzed to uncover their pragmatic and multimodal functions. The results show that the emoji dominates the comment section, functioning primarily as a marker of sarcasm and social solidarity, while the emoji  signals reluctant or uneasy laughter. Pragmatic analysis reveals a generally cynical stance among netizens, trivializing a serious issue while expressing reactions through multimodal cues. The study concludes that emoji play a crucial role in digital interaction, not only enriching textual communication but also effectively substituting verbal expressions to convey nuanced meanings in online discourse.

Abstract

The era of Big Data has reconstructed the communicative practices of society. Social media, as the most massive space for public interaction, has generated new patterns of politeness that are more fluid, expressive, and often marked by tension. The controversy surrounding Ahmad Sahroni, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, who described the call to “dissolve the DPR” as the attitude of “the world’s stupidest people,” provides a compelling case for analysis. This utterance triggered a wave of public criticism on social media, particularly on X (Twitter) and TikTok. This study aims to: (1) identify the dominance of bald-on-record strategies in public criticism, (2) examine the use of sarcasm and humor as forms of digital politeness, and (3) analyze the intensification of impoliteness practices as a consequence of anonymity and social media algorithms. M Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and pragmatic discourse analysis, this study draws on Searle’s speech act theory, Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, and Yus’s cyberpragmatics perspective. The findings reveal that public criticism was dominated by bald-on-record strategies, characterized by direct attacks on Sahroni. In addition, sarcasm and political humor emerged as distinctive forms of digital politeness within online spaces. The study also demonstrates that impoliteness practices increased significantly due to user anonymity and social media algorithms that tend to amplify the visibility of extreme comments. This study underscores the need to update classical politeness frameworks in order to better understand the dynamics of digital political communication in the era of Big Data.

Abstract

The media’s linguistic framing plays a pivotal role in shaping public understanding of socio-political events, particularly through the strategic use of personal deixis in news discourse. This study aims to (1) examine the frequency of personal deixis in news reports covering the 2025 “17+8” protest movement in Indonesia, and (2) analyze the pragmatic functions of these pronouns in influencing readers’ perspectives as the news circulated widely across digital platforms. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining big-data techniques to calculate the distribution of personal pronouns with pragmatic analysis to interpret their communicative functions. The dataset consists of news articles published between 20 August and 10 September 2025 from major Indonesian portals—CNN Indonesia, Tempo, Kompas, Detik, Jawa Pos, and Liputan 6. The corpus was processed using AntConc to identify pronoun patterns, followed by qualitative interpretation to determine their pragmatic roles within the discourse. The results reveal a clear dominance of first-person plural pronouns (kami, kita), while second-person singular forms (kamu, engkau, Anda) appear least frequently. These deixis choices function to construct solidarity, delineate social distance, and reinforce power relations within the narrative of the movement. The study concludes that personal deixis is not merely grammatical but a strategic linguistic tool that shapes ideological positioning in media coverage, underscoring its significance in understanding public discourse on social movements.
