Abstract

Media infiltration in the Indonesian Muslim community has made the existence of religious authority increasingly fragmented. This fragmentation eventually gave birth to some serious consequences: loss of control to religious symbols, overlapping truth claims and relativization of religious authority. Several recent cases, starting from the mushrooming of Muslim celeb-clerics, cases of criminalization of ulama, bullying the figures of senior ulama on social media, to the politicization of ulama identities in elections, are clear tokens of the consequences. The question is how to manage those consequences of the fragmentation of religious authority? This paper discusses the problem based on a comparative analysis of the data collected during fieldwork in Malaysia and Singapore in 2018. The data was collected by interviewing imams, asatizah, and university professors in both countries as well as Indonesian professors and the grand imam of the Istiqlal Mosque as the complementary. Using the mediatization theory as its theoretical basis, this research found that there are several important arguments to deal with the consequences. As a concluding remark, this paper proposes a formula of maq??id -based media ethics as an alternative point of view of an ethical construction of Muslim society’s interaction with media.

Abstract

Violence in the name of God—terrorism attacks, violence toward minority even inter religious conflicts—has nowadays become a global issue. In Indonesia, there are at least 30 cases of “holy” violence committed in the last ten years. The demand to have such freedoms, as of expression, of speech, of getting access to information, could be seen as a process of an ongoing democracy. Internet, in this context, is one of the popular media to channel this ambitions of democracy. On the other hand, many Muslim extremists use this change and this media to channel the ideology of jihad. This article aims to shed light on how the Indonesia netizen’s (cyber community) response to those kind of radical Islamist messages. By using descriptive content analysis to the comments of the respective issue in Kaskus website, this paper sees the variety of the responses that would contribute to the prevention of violence in the name of religion and suggest some solutions.

Abstract

This paper attempts to explore the phenomenon of Islamic propagation (dakwah) on the Internet known as "e-dakwah." It problematizes the authority of religious messages within cyberspace vis a vis Internet’s anonymity. This 'cyber ethnographic' research shows that people in cyberscape are concerned more with the messages than their authors. This study confirms the autonomic truth of the messages as it is supported by Imam ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib’s popular argument “listen to what has been said, not who has said that." Consequently, the truth and acceptance of it in the dakwah activities or messages within cyberspace does not depend on the preachers (dā‘ī) and their professional capacity and intellectual knowledge, but on the object of dakwah (mad‘ū). This paper proposes the term “The death of the da’i,” which is adapted from Roland Barthes' term “The death of the author” in his image-music-text, to discuss the phenomenon.

Abstract

Abstract Internet becomes an integral part of current Indonesian society‘s life. Meanwhile, the figure of kiai clearly cannot be separated from the history of Indonesian socio-religious life up until recently. Both the kiai and Internet are inseparable parts of current Indonesian social reality, in which, each of them possessed their particular share of power and ran according their own logics. Focusing on the case of Pandalungan Muslims community, where the kiai‘s authority is greatly acknowledged, this paper will shed the lights on the logic behind those two powers and the contestation (for authority) occurred between them. This paper concludes that the logic of the kiai-ness is the logic of culture and media logic is in the logic of culture. This made the kiais‘ authority is still standing strong in current media life.

Abstract

Qur’an, as it is believed by Muslims, is The Holy Book as well as the manifestation of The Words of God (Kalamullah). It has meanings which obviously was being ‘monopolized’ by The Ulama. In regarding of consequence, the authority of interpreting this Kalamullahseems ‘limited’ only for particular groups. Then, according the author it becomes the main factor leads the stagnancy of Quranic interpretation studies in this modern era. In this context, Schleiermacher’s teory about ‘psychological explication’ (1998), Paul Ricoeur’s theory about ‘distantiation and appropriation’ (1976), and ‘the marginalized reading of Scripture’ theory proposed by Simopoulos (2007), create a new path in interpreting Quran. From those theories, the author sheds the lights on hermeneutical interpretation of al-Fatihahby as one of the marginalized groups in Indonesia, the Waria. This paper concludes that the waria use their hermeneutical way of understanding the Scripture and produce not only anoriginal interpretation, but also contextual and full of theological reflections.

Abstract

Kata kunci: keramahan, religious others, Kampus Bela Negara, moral person, legal person As a counter discourse to the cases of intolerance in Indonesia, studies related to religious-others hospitality should be revisited more seriously. Based on Siddiqui's argument that hospitality towards different religions leads to the issue of attraction between the existence of humans as “Moral persons” and as “Legal persons,” this current article examines the contestation between those two factors among Muslim students at three State Defense Campuses (UPN Veteran Jawa Timur, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta). This current research uses mixed method to gain its primary data that combines spreading of online questionnaire and interviews with lecturers of Islamic Education and State Defense subjects. Based on quantitative analysis, this study concludes that the moral person and legal person factors have a positive impact on the formation of the religious-others hospitality character by 10.4% with the proportion of moral person values (consisting of religious values) being more dominant than the other one. Further qualitative analysis shows that there are three factors that support the formation of student’s religious-others hospitality: the plurality of their religious backgrounds, the values of Bela Negara that are instilled in a compulsory subject, and full support from all leaders of the university and its teaching staff. Keywords: hospitality, religious others, State Defense Campus, moral person, legal person

Abstract

This research discusses the dynamic phenomenon of the religious authority of the kiai’s wives, who usually known as “nyai”, in the area of Pandalungan, East Java, Indonesia. More specifically, this study highlights the problem of the subordination of nyai’s religious authority, or of female ulama’s in general, in the pesantren world. The fact that the glory of a pesantren is often only attributed to the leadership skills and greatness of the individual charisma of a kiai, the role of a nyai is, at this point, more often be subordinated or considered as the second actor behind the greatness of the husband's name. This problem is increasingly complex when it is faced with local cultural realities which significantly contribute to down-grading the existence of female ulama. Based on the existing theories in gender discourse, religious authority in Islam, and female psychology, this study concludes that the religious authority of women in Islam in Pandalungan is actually dynamic. Local cultural factors that are inherited from generation to generation and the psychology of a woman, in this case, become the main factor behind the gap of male and female religious authority in pesantren and of ideal-theological view of women and local culture realities in general.
