Abstract

Physical literacy is the main goal of physical education in elementary schools, with fundamental movement skills as the foundation. However, information supporting the relationship between these two constructs and effective pedagogical techniques is still fragmented. The purpose of this systematic review aimed to find, analyze, and synthesize research findings on fundamental movement skills, motor competencies, and physical literacy in physical education in elementary schools. A qualitative systematic review design in accordance with PRISMA guidelines was employed. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database on February 14, 2026, using relevant keywords such as physical literacy, fundamental movement skills, motor competence, and primary education. After screening and eligibility determination, eight peer-reviewed English-language scientific articles were included and evaluated descriptively. The findings consistently showed a significant positive relationship between fundamental movement skills and physical literacy, indicating that children with higher motor skills tend to be more motivated, confident, and actively participate in physical activities. Intervention programs, such as physical education enriched with physical literacy, multi-method teaching techniques, and scheduled physical activity programs, have been shown to significantly improve motor skills, engagement, and learning outcomes. The implementation of student-centered teaching strategies and the improvement of teachers' pedagogical skills are essential for enhancing motor development, encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity, and optimizing the effectiveness of physical education programs.

Abstract

Physical education in elementary schools is crucial for improving students' gross motor skills, especially in Phase B, which is a crucial stage in children's motor skill development. Therefore, a valid and reliable instrument is needed to evaluate gross motor skills so that the results can be used objectively as a basis for developing educational objectives. The purpose of this study was to analyze the validity and reliability of gross motor skills tests in Phase B elementary school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional and descriptive analysis design. The subjects were Phase B elementary school students who participated in gross motor skill measurements during one data collection period. The gross motor examination that assessed manipulative, locomotor, and non-locomotor skills was used as a research tool. Product Moment Correlation was used for validity testing, and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was used for reliability testing. The majority of test items had significant correlation coefficients (p < 0.05), according to the results of the study, and were considered valid; however, several questions needed to be revised because they did not meet validity requirements. The instrument demonstrated reliable internal consistency, as indicated by the Cronbach's Alpha rating of 0.71 in reliability testing. Therefore, the gross motor skills test is considered suitable as a tool to evaluate gross motor skills in elementary school students in Phase B, although some aspects need to be improved to enhance the overall quality of the instrument.

Abstract

The availability of culturally relevant and psychometrically verified motor skill assessment measures for upper primary school kids in Indonesia remains limited. The purpose of this study was to create and assess the validity and reliability of a motoric test instrument specifically tailored for fifth and sixth grade pupils. A cross-sectional design was used with 51 fifth-grade kids (27 boys and 24 girls) chosen by chance from a public primary school in Surabaya, Indonesia. The designed instrument included seven core movement skill items that represented locomotor, stability, and manipulative domains: obstacle leap, coordination movement, forward roll, football dribbling, basketball dribble, throw and catch, and ball striking. The data was analyzed with IBM SPSS 25 using Pearson product-moment correlation to determine item validity and Cronbach's alpha to measure internal consistency. Six of the seven test items were found to be valid (r = 0.31-0.75; p < 0.05), but the obstacle jump item did not satisfy the validity criteria (r = 0.27; p = 0.05). The overall reliability coefficient showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.59), above the minimum r-table value (0.28). These results indicate that the created instrument is largely valid and reliable for measuring fundamental movement skills in upper primary pupils, with only one item requiring minor revision. In practice, this instrument gives physical education instructors a context-appropriate and structured assessment tool to help them support evidence-based evaluation and improve motor learning outcomes in Indonesian primary schools.

Abstract

In the learning process, physical education demands student involvement that goes beyond the physical realm and includes cognitive as well as affective aspects. Although digital technology is rapidly being adopted in the classroom, current literature does not adequately address how it should be used in physical education at the secondary school level. To synthesize digital technology integration strategies and their relation to the three aspects of student engagement, namely behavioural, cognitive, and affective, this paper presents a narrative review. After searching the Scopus database for publications from 2021 to 2026, 78 papers were found. The papers were selected through a gradual procedure that included examination of titles, abstracts, and full texts, based on pre-established eligibility criteria. In the end, two studies met all the requirements and underwent thematic analysis. The synthesis shows that digital technologies including flipped learning, video, apps, and tracking devices increase engagement not only through their presence, but also through pedagogical functions such as maximizing activity time, facilitating individualization, providing feedback, and encouraging reflection. Although affective engagement is under supported by statistical evidence and cognitive engagement is still in the early stages, behavioural engagement has the strongest evidence. This article highlights the need for further research with robust designs and multidimensional engagement measurement instruments, as well as concludes that teacher roles, digital competence, and the balance between technology use and physical activity time are important factors determining successful integration.

Abstract

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are an important part of children’s gross motor development. Their association with physical fitness has been reported in previous studies, but evidence among elementary school students in Indonesia is still limited. This study examined FMS proficiency and physical fitness among fourth-grade students at SDN 03 Kanigoro, Madiun City. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using an analytic observational approach. The population consisted of 28 students, and 27 students were included in the analysis through purposive sampling because one student was absent due to illness. FMS was measured with the Test of Gross Motor Development–Third Edition (TGMD-3), and physical fitness was assessed using the Tes Kebugaran Pelajar Nusantara (TKPN). Category distributions were described using descriptive statistics. The association between FMS proficiency and physical fitness was examined with the Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test because the requirements for Pearson’s chi-square test were not met. Among the 27 students, 37.0% were classified as Impaired or delayed. For physical fitness, 51.9% were classified as Fair and 48.1% as Good. The Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test gave an Exact Sig. (2-sided) value of 0.514, showing no statistically significant association between FMS proficiency and physical fitness. The findings suggest that FMS and physical fitness should both be considered in elementary school physical education.

Abstract

This study describes the biomechanical characteristics of the basic one-hand pass movement in handball performed by senior high school students. A descriptive quantitative design was used, with video analysis as the main method of data collection. Ten students who had previously received handball instruction participated in the study. Each student performed three one-hand pass trials, resulting in 30 movement trials for analysis. The recorded movements were analyzed using Kinovea to obtain measurements of elbow angle, shoulder angle, knee angle, foot width, and throwing time. The data were summarized using minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation values. The results showed variation in the movement characteristics among the students. The mean elbow angle was 68.18 ± 48.47°, while the mean shoulder angle was 81.36 ± 30.71°. The mean knee angle was 164.27 ± 12.19°, and the average foot width was 85.42 ± 19.31 cm. The average throwing time was 1.38 ± 0.67 s. These findings show that students performed the one-hand pass with different joint positions, foot support widths, and movement durations. The results provide a description of the biomechanical characteristics of the one-hand pass among senior high school students and may serve as a reference for evaluating and improving the learning of basic handball skills.
