Abstract

Social conflict in Indonesia is no longer merely incidental but rather systemic and recurrent, rooted in structural inequality, social exclusion, and weak institutional capacity to detect potential conflicts at an early stage. Under these conditions, law enforcementwhich remains legally formalistic and reactivehas not yet been optimized as a mechanism for the early detection of social conflict. Although various studies have examined the relationship between law and conflict, existing approaches tend to be partial and have not been able to integrate legal, moral, and social dimensions simultaneously. This study aims to analyze the limitations of law enforcement in the early detection of social conflict and to reconstruct its function through the perspective of Jürgen Moltmann’s public theology, specifically the concept of the Theology of Hope. This study employs a qualitative approach with a normative-conceptual design within a socio-legal framework through systematic literature review. The findings indicate that the limitations of law enforcement lie in the dominance of a reactive paradigm, a weak orientation toward substantive justice, and the absence of mechanisms sensitive to structural injustice. This study offers an integrative model that positions law as a preventive, responsive, and transformative instrument in the prevention of social conflict, while also providing a theoretical contribution to the development of public theology in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This article offers a theological and ethical reappraisal of labor, capital, and production within the context of globalized economic systems through Miroslav Volf’s theology of work. Rather than treating labor merely as an economic input, the study interprets work as participation in God’s creative and redemptive activity through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. Employing a qualitative normative-theological approach, the article examines biblical teachings on work, justice, stewardship, and communal responsibility in dialogue with Volf’s concept of work in the Spirit. The study argues that globalization intensifies ethical distortions when labor is reduced to a commodity, capital is detached from moral accountability, and production is governed primarily by profit maximization. In response, Volf’s theology offers a constructive framework for understanding work as the expression of Spirit-given charisms that participate in God’s ongoing work of creation and new creation, capital as an instrument for human flourishing and responsible stewardship, and production as a moral practice oriented toward justice, solidarity, and the common good. The article concludes that churches, Christian professionals, and faith-based institutions should cultivate marketplace ministry, ethical entrepreneurship, and labor advocacy as concrete expressions of Spirit-empowered economic discipleship in contemporary society.

Abstract

The Nephilim have long been a controversial topic in biblical theology and can give rise to conflict due to differing interpretations across various denominations, which in turn can weaken the unity of the body of Christ. One interpretation holds that the Nephilim were giants resulting from relations between human and spiritual beings, while another view argues that the Nephilim were simply large humans with no connection to spiritual entities. The question is whether Pentecostal believers, as part of the body of Christ, can respond more wisely to the existing differences in interpretation and discover alternative interpretations by using qualitative research methods, literature review, and exposition of biblical texts through a hermeneutical-theological study with a Pentecostal systematic approach? This study is limited to understand the Nephilim according to what is written in the canonical Indonesian Bible (Terjemahan Baru by Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia TB-LAI), without relying on conclusions drawn from apocryphal writings. The urgency of this research lies in its effort to offer a Pentecostal systematic approach to Nephilim theology, highlighting the root cause of humanity’s fall as rebellion against God and the restoration of the church through the work of the Holy Spirit, who guides and leads the new men to live as sons of God. The results of this study demonstrate that the Bible, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is capable of providing answers to the theology of the Nephilim and adequately explaining the identity of the sons of God in a way that supports the growth of Pentecostal believers’ faith in the dynamics of the modern era.

Abstract

Nigeria's conflict-affected regions, particularly the Northeast, Middle Belt, and Niger Delta, have experienced severe deforestation driven by insurgency, displacement, military operations, and resource extraction. These dynamics have deepened food insecurity, accelerated biodiversity loss, and produced long-term ecological degradation across communities already burdened by violence. While environmental scholarship has documented these impacts with growing urgency, theological and eco-theological studies have insufficiently engaged the question of how biblical war legislation conceptualizes limits to environmental destruction in conflict settings. This study addresses that gap by revisiting Deuteronomy 20:19–20, examining how this ancient legal text articulates constraints on ecological harm within the context of warfare and how its ethical logic may be critically, rather than prescriptively, related to contemporary conflict-induced deforestation in Nigeria. The study employs an integrated methodological framework combining historical-critical, literary, and eco-theological approaches, further deepened by just war theory, political theology, and postcolonial critique. Findings reveal that Deuteronomy 20:19–20 functions primarily as a legal constraint on totalizing destruction, reflecting an internal tension between military necessity and resource preservation rather than a fully developed ecological ethic. Its significance for contemporary discourse lies not in direct normative transfer but in its capacity to illuminate enduring tensions between violence, governance, and environmental limitation. The study therefore reframes the passage as a dialogical resource for critical theological reflection, one that invites engagement with the moral boundaries of warfare and the sacred responsibility toward creation, without assuming direct continuity between ancient and modern contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the theological implications of discrimination in Christian fellowship through an exegetical reading of James 2:1–13 in relation to the Gen Z community. Using a qualitative approach grounded in historical-critical exegesis and theological literature analysis, this study argues that James’s prohibition of partiality is not merely a moral warning against social inequality, but a theological critique of communal practices that contradict faith in Jesus Christ, the royal law of love, and the community’s accountability before divine judgment. The analysis shows that the rich-poor contrast in James 2:1–13 functions as a concrete case through which the text exposes a broader ecclesial disorder, namely the tendency to assign differential worth according to outward status and visibility. In dialogue with practical-theological studies on Gen Z, the article further argues that the passage remains highly relevant in a context where younger generations evaluate Christian communities through justice, authenticity, participation, and belonging. This study contributes an integrative theological framework that connects biblical exegesis, discrimination in Christian fellowship, and the practical-theological horizon of Gen Z, while proposing James 2:1–13 as a normative resource for evaluating ecclesial belonging in contemporary church life.
Privilege or Mandate? Nepo Babies in Biblical Narrative and the Political Reality of Indonesia Obet Nego; Debby Christ Mondolu

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of nepo babies, a term denoting the children of prominent figures who attain power through family connections, in relation to biblical narrative and Indonesia's political realities. Employing a critical qualitative approach combining biblical hermeneutics with critical discourse analysis, the study finds that political dynasties in Indonesia expose a persistent tension between privilege and mandate. Though often defended as legitimate within existing legal and social frameworks, such dynasties frequently erode democracy and deepen social inequality. A parallel pattern emerges in Scripture: hereditary succession alone guarantees neither competence nor faithfulness, as the failures of Eli's sons and Solomon's decline make clear, whereas Joseph and David show that legitimate leadership rests on divine calling and integrity rather than lineage. Drawing on Walter Brueggemann's prophetic imagination, the article argues that the church is called to function as a prophetic community that criticizes unjust power structures and envisions more just political alternatives. It concludes that privilege should be understood as a divine mandate rather than an inherited entitlement, with implications for ecclesial public engagement and a more meritocratic Indonesian politics.

Abstract

This article examines the dialogue between the oral traditions of the Timorese people and the Gospel of Mark through an oral-based hermeneutical approach, operationalized as a comparative library-based study rather than field ethnography. Primary data consist of the Markan text (Mark 4:1–34 and Mark 8:27–30); secondary data consist of published ethnographic documentation of Timorese oral practices, particularly natoni. Three analytical indicators are used consistently throughout the study: communal memory, speech event, and narrative performativity, synthesized from Walter J. Ong, Werner H. Kelber, James D. G. Dunn, Richard Bauman, Ruth Finnegan, Richard A. Horsley, and Dell Hymes. The analysis shows that both corpora exhibit structurally comparable oral mechanisms (repetition, dialogic address, and performative closure) that sustain memory and shape communal identity, without implying any historical or genealogical connection between them. The article positions its contribution against prior orality scholarship, particularly the volume Performing the Gospel, and argues that its distinct contribution lies in a documentary-comparative model applicable to library-based contextual hermeneutics where field access is constrained. The study concludes with an explicit call for future field-based validation of the proposed model.

Abstract

The ecological crisis in the Batak lands, manifested in flooding, landslides, pollution of Lake Toba, and forest degradation, reflects a crisis of relationship between humanity, nature, and God rooted in an anthropocentric paradigm. Although global ecotheology has critiqued this paradigm through the concept of stewardship, such an approach is considered to retain hierarchical relational structures. This article aims to formulate a Batak Toba ecotheology of friendship as a post-stewardship relational ontology by positioning local cosmology as a locus theologicus. This study employs a qualitative-theological approach using Stephen B. Bevans’s anthropological model of contextual theology, based on a literature review and critical analysis of the dialogue between the ecological crisis, Batak Toba cosmology, and Christian theological reflection. The findings indicate that the human-nature relationship in Batak Toba cosmology is genealogical and communal, whereby ecological responsibility is understood as fidelity to cosmic kinship. This paradigm offers a transformative spiritual-ethical framework for the church in responding to ecological crises in a contextual and sustainable manner.

Abstract

This article examines the deployment of Indonesian Societas Verbi Divini (SVD) missionaries to the Netherlands as a structured expression of "reverse mission," situating this contemporary phenomenon within a historical relationship spanning over a century. Based on fieldwork conducted in 2025, including semi-structured interviews with six Indonesian SVD priests currently serving in the Netherlands and participant observation in Dutch parishes, this study identifies 83 Indonesian missionaries active throughout the country, with the SVD emerging as the most numerically prominent male congregation. The article further argues that the current movement of Indonesian SVD missionaries to the Netherlands is not a spontaneous response to modern clerical shortages, but rather the latest chapter in a reciprocal relationship that began when Dutch SVD missionaries arrived in Indonesia in 1914. This reverse mission embodies a living theology of reciprocity, wherein the fruits of past evangelization return to revitalize an increasingly secularized Church. These findings contribute to the field of missiology by highlighting structured religious orders, rather than diaspora communities, as the primary institutional vehicles for reverse mission, and by demonstrating that historical missionary ties fundamentally shape contemporary currents of reverse mission.

Abstract

Modern theological discourse and popular culture frequently generate various speculations concerning the identity of Jesus that do not always align with the theological witness of Scripture. Certain historical approaches tend to portray Jesus merely as a human figure within the context of first-century Judaism, thereby obscuring the Church’s confession of His divinity and messianic identity. In this context, the testimony of John the Baptist in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” serves as a significant text affirming the supremacy of Christ. Although this verse has been widely examined from Christological and spiritual perspectives, there remains a limited number of studies that specifically explore John 3:30 as a theological foundation for a leadership paradigm in Christian education. This gap in the literature constitutes the primary focus of the present study. The purpose of this research is to examine the theological meaning of John 3:30 through exegetical analysis and to formulate its implications for a Christ-centered model of leadership in Christian education. The novelty of this study lies in its effort to position John 3:30 as a paradigmatic foundation for Christian educational leadership oriented toward the supremacy of Christ, a perspective that has received limited attention in both theological and Christian educational scholarship. This research employs a library research method using an exegetical-theological approach. Data were collected through an analysis of the Greek text of John 3:30, an examination of the narrative context of John 3:22–36, and a critical review of relevant biblical, theological, and Christian leadership literature. The findings reveal that John 3:30 constitutes a theological confession of Christ’s supremacy within God’s plan of salvation. The Greek expression ekeinon dei auxanein, eme de elattousthai conveys a divine necessity whereby the glory and authority of Christ must increasingly be manifested, while the role of John the Baptist diminishes as part of the mission entrusted to him. Within the narrative framework of the Gospel of John, John the Baptist appears as a witness who directs attention to Christ as the center of God’s revelation. His testimony reflects a model of leadership characterized by humility, self-emptying, and an orientation toward the glory of Christ. This study contributes to the development of Christian educational leadership theory by affirming that authentic leadership authority is realized through a disposition that centers the entire educational process on Christ as the source, goal, and transformative center of learners.
