Passage is a journal published by English Language and Literature Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Initially published for students’ articles based on their final research paper, Passage now is also accepting articles from researchers outside the study program. The journal focuses on research in language and literary studies written in English. Passage addresses issues on, but not limited to, roles of language and literature, genre, gender, discourse, ethnicity, and media within the frameworks of linguistics and literary theories. It also welcomes more specific research on Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts to introduce a wider scholarship in the region for a more global readership. This journal is published twice a year in the months of April and November.

Abstract

This study entitled The Representation of Women in Instant Seasoning Advertisements. This study aims to investigate how women are represented in instant seasoning advertisements and reveal ideologies behind the representation. This study investigates the representation of women in five instant seasoning advertisements; ABC ‘Sambal Masak’ advertisement “Kayak Masakan Mami”, Royco ‘All in One’ advertisement “Ini Resepku”, Indofood ‘Bumbu Racik Tempe’ advertisement “Resep Kering Tempe”, Masako ‘Bumbu Kaldu Penyedap’ advertisement “Cuma Ubi”, and ‘Bango ‘Bumbu Ayam Goreng Bacem’ advertisement “Petani Ketumbar”. The advertisements were downloaded randomly from www.youtube.com. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Women in instant seasoning advertisements were investigated through the visual elements of the advertisements as follows; actresses (physical appearance, fashion, facial expression and emotion), setting and properties, frame size, camera angle, and color saturation. This study uses order of signification’s theory by Barthes (1957), reading images’ theory by Kress and Leuween (2006), and some theories of visual elements in television advertisement. The results show that women are mostly represented as brave, feminine, motherly, cheerful, independent, calm, optimistic, and modern women. The study also concludes that there are three ideologies in instant seasoning advertisements: femininity, modernism, and recreation.Keywords: Semiotics, Representation, Women, Advertisements

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the conversational implicatures during the debate between 2012 candidates of Jakarta Governor and to identify which maxims the candidates failed to observe, also to identify what implicatures that are attained from the violated maxims. Data were taken from DKI Jakarta governor candidates debate aired on Metro TV on August 18, 2012. Data relevant to implicatures were marked and numbered. The data were analyzed by classifying conversations with maxim violations. The results show that the governor candidates commit flouting towards Grice's (1975) maxims. The maxim the candidates violated the most was relevance maxim. Furthermore, the flouting occurs due to several factors comprising lack of knowledge, insufficient evidence, and avoidance answering questions in purpose. However, even though some violations were done, some of the candidates were able to use sentences or utterances in compliance with the cooperative principles since only half of the data that are violated.Keywords: Conversational Implicatures, Debate, Grice's Maxims, Maxims Flouting

Abstract

The research aims to discover the types of translation strategies which were found in apparenticeship students’ translation products and to assess the students’ English-Indonesian translation quality by asking five English students to rank the students’ translation products. This research employs the theory of translation strategy proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) and Sara Bani (2006). The criterias that are used to assess the apparenticeship students’ translation products are proposed by Barnwell (1980 as cited in Larson, 1984). Descriptive Qualitative study approach by Cresswell (2002), was used as the research design of the research. There are 172 selected phrases which were analyzed by the research. The result reveals that the most frequently used translation strategy is Calque (45.35%), then it was followed by Borrowing (29.65%), Adaptation (8.14%), Equivalence (6.40%), Substitution (4.66%), Generalization (2.33%), Transposition (1.74%), and Inclusion of Explanation (1.74%). The result also shows that (77.78%) of text was cut by the translators to eliminate the information that is too detail and unimportant, then to remove the information that had been covered by the previous sentences, and to cut the sensitive issue that may cause misconception to the readers. Most of participants thought that the translation products were good and understandable. However, the participants thought that the translation products are not natural since the translators used too much Calque translation strategy in translating the text.Keywords: translation strategies, translation quality, vinay and darbelnet (2000), Bani (2006)

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the common characteristics of Indonesian pronunciation deviations made by undergraduate college students from Batak Angkola and to observe the factors that contribute to the interference. The participants are two female Batak Angkola undergraduate students who have been living in Bandung for four years and are active speakers of Bahasa Indonesia and Batak Angkola-Mandailing language. To compare the results, four other participants who come from Jakarta and Bandung, have the same age and gender, and are not active speakers of any Indonesian local languages are also recruited. Based on the pilot test conducted prior to the research, the phonemes that are investigated are /e/, /ə/ and plosives (/b/, /d/, /g/, /k/, /t/, /p/). The data are collected through two types of assessment, which are a reading task, and pronunciation tests in the form of three word lists. By using software Praat, the deviations analysis and a further acoustic phonetic analysis of vowel and consonant duration are conducted. In general, there are two types of pronunciations deviations made by the participants: devoicing and allophonic shift that occurs between /ə/ into /e/ and /e/ into /ə/. The factors that contribute to the interference are speaker bilingualism background, language distant, anxiety, empathy and group solidarity.Keywords: Language interference, pronunciations, acoustic phonetics, Batak Angkola-Mandailing language.

Abstract

This study entitled ‘The Portrayal of Masculinity in To Catch a Prince by Gillian McKnight’ aims to find the types of masculinity portrayed in the novel and their meanings. It applies a context-oriented approach and employs the textual analysis technique to answer the research questions. The data are analyzed using Rende’s chick lit theory (2008) and Harris’s theory of masculinity male messages (2005). The findings show that masculinity is portrayed through five types: the perfect man, the controlling man, the lover, the forbearing man, and the nature lover. It can be assumed that traditional masculinity which asserts strong, independent, achieving, hardworking, heterosexual, tough, aggressive, unemotional, physical, competitive, and forceful is still prevailed. In this text, it implies that it is related to the masculinity of fairy tales which are known to champion masculinity. Abstract

The present study, entitled Grice’s Conversational Implicature in Written Short Humor Dialogues examines the types of conversational implicature, hidden messages which are generated in written short humor dialogues, and audience’s responses to implicatures. The present study uses 45 written short humor dialogues which are taken from www.squackle.com, www.lotsofjokes.com, www.englishindo.com, and www.jokes4u.com. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using Grice’s conversational implicature (1975). The study is also supported by Hay’s humor support strategies (2003) to analyze the audience’s responses toward implicature. The study discovers that particularized conversational implicature is the only type of conversational implicature which appears in written short humor dialogues. Those particularized implicatures are generated through the failure in observing maxims, in the form of flouts. Moreover, flouts maxim of relation is the mostly flouted in the written short humor dialogues with 39 occurrences (86.7%) from 45 occurrences. With regard to audience’s responses, they are obtained through a short interview with 20 students from English Education Department. The result of the interviews demonstrates that the audiences only use three strategies proposed by Hay (2003) which are ‘contributing more humor’ (53%), ‘humor is support strategy itself’ (22%), and ‘mixed strategy’ (1%) between ‘contributing more humor’ and ‘offering sympathy’. All in all, the findings indicate that humors are easily made by flouting maxims. Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of slang, subtitling strategies applied, and the types of equivalence discovered in the movie subtitle. There are three different theoretical frameworks employed in this study in order to analyze the data, those are the classification of types of slang based on the lexical meaning proposed by Finnegan et al. (1992) and the word-formation process proposed by Yule (1996), the subtitling strategies as proposed by Gottlieb (1992 in Ghaemi and Benyamin, 2010); and the types of equivalence by Kade (1968 in Pym, 2010). Descriptive Qualitative approach was employed as the research design in this study. There are 370 slang words and phrases as the collected data which were taken from 50/50 movie subtitle. The result revealed that out of 12 classifications of types of slang, there were 8 types identified, and Synonymy (55.14%) was the most frequent type of slang applied in the movie subtitle. Similar to the types of slang, there are 7 out of 10 subtitling strategies applied in the movie subtitle, and the most-used strategy applied in the movie subtitle was Transfer (43.43%). Furthermore, in types of equivalence, there are 3 out of 4 types with the most frequent type applied in the movie subtitle was One to Several equivalence (95.9%). In addition, in the combination of three analyses, Synonymy-Transfer-One to Several equivalence was mostly appeared simultaneously in the movie subtitle which has 73 occurrences. Therefore, it can be concluded that types of slang, subtitling strategies, and types of equivalence are correlated to each other. It happened because the subtitling strategies as the strategies which were used to translate the slang words and phrases resulted in the translated version of the slang that were classified into types of equivalence. Keywords: Slang words and phrases, Types of Slang, Subtitling Strategies, and Types of Equivalence.

Abstract

This research investigates the representation of Jokowi’s figure as the governor of Jakarta, the presidential candidate, and the President of Indonesia in the Jakarta Post by using nomination and predication strategies of Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Reisigl and Wodak (2009). By employing descriptive qualitative method, this research examines fifteen editorials focusing on Jokowi. The findings reveal three main points. First, deixis and synecdoches become the nomination strategies that signify changes. The strategies signal that the Jakarta Post prefers to focus on Jokowi when he becomes the president since his every action represents the action that the government and Indonesia take. Second, the Jakarta Post prefers to use positive predication strategies in presenting Jokowi’s figure in all categories except in the KPK issue. Third, the signification of the representation indicates that nomination and predication strategies are employed to represent the shift in political support towards Jokowi: from positive to negative. The Jakarta Post supports Jokowi since his performance as a leader is in line with the Jakarta Post values. However, the fact that the Jakarta Post no longer gives him its full support on the KPK issue indicates that his action contradicts the Jakarta Post’s ideology that supports anticorruption movement.Keywords: Jokowi, the Jakarta Post, discourse historical approach, nomination strategies, predication strategies
