Abstract

The potential of palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) ash as a base catalyst for hydrogen production fromhydrolysis of water with Aluminium has been inverstigated by using a simple hand-made reactor. This study was preceded by using conventional bases, NaOH and KOH, then compared with the use of K2CO3 and EFB ash as catalysts. The catalyst was prepared by ashing the EFB at 600oC for 2 h. Characterization of catalyst was conducted by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) methods. EFB ash contains potassium in K2CO3 and KCl form, with total potassium of 29.3% by weight. Water hydrolysis was carried out by reacting 0.01 g of Aluminum with various concentrations of KOH, NaOH, K2CO3 solutions, and EFB ash filtrates. The increasing of catalysts concentration caused the enhancement of hydrogen gas produced. The highest conversion of hydrolysis reaction was obtained by the application of KOH as a catalyst. The utilization of NaOH leads the reaction faster. K2CO3 and EFB ash filtrate also can be used to produce hydrogen with a high enough quantity but slower.

Abstract

Nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles were used as sensors for mercury (Hg) in water using a UV-Visspectrophotometer instrument. The synthesis of Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles was carried out by electrochemical method using nickel plates as anode and cathode and the process was operated at constant voltage of 25 V for 30 minutes. In this study, 2 variations of the concentration of Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles were used, namely (5 mL and 4 mL) to detect mercury at concentrations of 10 ppm, 40 ppm, and 50 ppm. Changes in the absorbance value of Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles will be observed. From the observations, there was a decrease in the absorbance value of Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles along with the increase in mercury concentration. The decrease in the absorbance value of Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles is directly proportional to the amount of mercury concentration. The detection limit value was obtained at a volume of 5 mL and 4 mL are 45 ppm, and 35 ppm.

Abstract

Zinc carbon battery consists of zinc (Zn) in which carbon (C) is covered with manganese dioxide (MnO2)and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) in the form of a paste. The Zn-C battery is a primary battery which willeventuallu be disposed as a waste. Waste Zn-C batteries contain ahazardous waste which is harmful to the environment. To reduce hazardous substance, a conversion of the zinc plate was carried out into a useful zinc sulfate compound. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of sulfuric acid required to convert zinc plates to zinc sulfate and the percent efficiency of yield. The conversion process included pre-treatment, dissolving zinc in various concentration of sulfuric acid (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%) in a volume of 80 mL,stirring at 450 rpm, and heating, filtration, and crystallization. Zinc sulfate heptahydrate crystals were formed at room temperature. Maximum yields were archieved at a 30% sulfuric acid concentration with a 1:1 ratio of zinc to sulfuric acid with a small excess of sulfuric acid. Under these conditions, ZnSO4.7H2O crystals produced was 18.39 grams with an efficiency of 83.71%.

Abstract

A study was conducted on determining the synthesis pathway of the type of impurity in methamphetamine in samples obtained from investigators' allowance evidence tested using the GC-MS method. Based on the experience of the author who conducted a qualitative examination of methamphetamine compounds at the Forensic Laboratory of the North Sumatra Regional Police, it was deemed necessary to carry out an impurity examination of evidence, especially on the confiscation of large amounts of evidence so that the route of synthesis, chemicals and precursors used in production could be identified mapping of the circulation of evidence and tracking of the acquisition of chemicals is carried out for further restriction and action for distributors who do not have/abuse their distribution permit. The method used is testing with GC-MS. Based on the GC-MS test, there were 4 impurities obtained, namely n-methyl methamphetamine, n-acetyl methamphetamine, benzaldehyde and benzyl methyl ketone. The compound n-methyl methamphetamine, nacetyl methamphetamine is a compound that will form n-formyl methamphetamine which is a key intermediate and impurity product of the synthesis of methamphetamine by the Leuckart route. In the Leuckart route, benzaldehyde is used as a starting material for the synthesis of benzyl methyl ketone or P2P (Phenyl-2-propanone).

Abstract

Remazol red is a color substance that can cause environmental pollution, so adsorption methods areused to reduce the concentration of remazol red color substances before being dumped into the water with silica aerogel-activated carbon nanocomposite adsorbent. Silica aerogel-activated carbon nanocompoposite are synthesized using sol-gel methods and drying at ambient pressure with the base material of bagasse ash. The success of synthesis can be reviewed from the results of FT-IR characterization, which then synthesis results are applied to red remazol adsorption by varying pH, contact time, temperature, and concentration, so that its adsorption capacity can be known. Adsorption capacity of remazol red by silica aerogel-activated carbon nanocompoposite was obtained at optimum contact time of 80 minutes, adsorbent mass of 0.01 grams and remazol red concentration of 40 mg/L at pH 2 is 3.9375 mg/g. Adsorption capacity decreases as the pH and temperature increase and increases as the concentration of remazol red. Adsorption of remazol red using silica aerogel-activated carbon nanocompoposite follows the two-order kinetic model and Freundlich isoterm. Adsorption thermodynamics obtained ∆G° = -454,478 J/mol (45°C), ∆H° = -13659,902 J/mol, and ∆S° = -40,662 J/Kmol which indicates that the adsorption process takes place spontaneously, exothermicly.
