Abstract

Four research questions are proposed related to (1) students’ English proficiencylevels at the university and faculty levels, (2) their English proficiency levels in each study program, (3) their proficiency in Listening, Structure, and Reading, and (4) possible activities as follows-ups of the TOEFL-Like tests. Using the survey research design, the study involved 24,909 YSU new students of the academic years 2005–2009. Data were analyzed quantitatively using the mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentages. The results are as follows. First, on the university level, students attain a mean score of 367 (intermediate) with a standard deviation of 50.65 (high homogeneity). On the faculty level,they attain a mean score of 378.81 (FMIPA), 372.83 (FISE), 367.18 (FT), 363.83 (FBS), 363.77 (FIP), and 356.44 (FIK). Second, highest scores are achieved by four study programs (400 or higher), the second by 13 study programs (375 – 399), the third by 45 study programs (350 – 374), and the lowest scores by eight study programs (349 or lower). Third, the score attainment is 35.5% (Reading), 31.25% (Structure), and 27.2% (Listening). Fourth, possible follow-up activities are elevation of students’ TOEFL scores, course placements, improvement of MKU English, planning and implementation of international programs, and graduation requirement for S-1.

Abstract

This study discusses the Dutch-Indonesian interlanguage using psycholinguistics in the syntactic level. The sentences in the interlanguage are expressed by thirty students with different language proficiency levels and are analyzed to test the prediction of Pienemann’s processability theory (2005a, 2005b, 2005c, dan 2007). This study proves the validity of the processability theory. The Dutch learners mastering sentences with the most difficult level of processability also master sentences with easier levels of processability. The results from the learners with the high proficiency support the processability theory more firmly than those from the learners with the lower proficiency. Learners rely on meaning when they are not sure of their grammatical competence. Interlanguage is formed because of the demand on the learners that in a short time they have to express concepts and ideas in their minds but the facilitating divices are still limited, while they have already mastered the first language and possibly other languages.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the English language used by science teachers in SMARSBI in Central Java in their bilingual classes in terms of its proportion to Indonesian,grammaticalness, and complexity. It used a descriptive method and the data were collectedthrough direct observations of eight science classes and interviews with the science teachers and the school principals. The teacher talk and interview sessions were audio recorded, transcribed, and analysed qualitatively to provide answers to the research questions. The results indicate that the science teachers at the schools did not have sufficient mastery of English for bilingual classes, which affected the students’ attitudes to the bilingual program. The interviews with the teachers and school principals also revealed problems with teachers’ motivation to improve their English in spite of the supports provided by the school management.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengungkapkan disorder pragmatik anak tuna rungu dalam interaksi pembelajaran di kelas, meliputi (1) wujud tutur anak tuna rungu, (2) kendala tutur anak tuna rungu, dan (3) intervensi guru terhadap disorder pragmatik anak tuna rungu. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini berupa data deskriptif dan data reflektif. Hasil penelitian sebagai berikut. Pertama, wujud tutur anak tuna rungu meliputi tindak ilokusi, fungsi tutur, dan strategi bertutur. Kedua, kendala tutur anak tuna rungu terutama terjadi pada bentuk tutur sehingga ujaran mereka sering terdengar tidak jelas. Ketiga, guru melakukan intervensi terhadap tindak tutur, fungsi tutur, dan strategi bertutur anak tuna rungu dalam interaksi pembelajaran di kelas.

Abstract

This research and development study aims to produce models of teaching kits forwriting based on the genre process approach for junior high school students. The procedure employed the R2D2 model, consisting of three main stages, i.e. (1) definition, (2) design and development, and (3) dissemination. The data consisted of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using the domain analysis technique with critical and reflective principles, while the quantitative data were analyzed using t-test with SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The study produces five models, i.e.: (1) a syllabus model, (2) a lesson plan model, (3) a learning materials model, (4) an evaluation instrument model, and (5) a teacher guide model of the teaching of writing. Based on the data analysis, the five models of teaching kits for writing are effective to improve the students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the divine vision, worldly vision, and concept of makingthe self close to God according to Hamzah Fansuri. The data sources were Syair Perahu I and Syair Perahu II transcribed by Braginsky. The data were collected through repeated reading. They were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive technique with a reference to literary and sufism theories. The study reveals three conclusions. First, according to Hamzah Fansuri, human beings’ closeness to God can reach the highest level, namely the unification of the creature and the creator. Second, Hamzah Fansuri views the world as something temporary and the life after as something eternal. Third, Hamzah Fansuri’s concept of making the self close to God includes (a) being aware of the self, (b) remembering God and expressing praises, (c) performing good deeds, (d) controlling the passion and living simple life, and (e) avoiding evil deeds.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) melakukan rekonstruksi kualitatif pada bahasa-bahasa di Minahasa, yaitu hubungan kekerabatan bahasa Tondano (Tnd), Tonsea (Tns),Tombulu (Tmb), dan Tontemboan (Tnt); (2) melakukan rekonstruksi kuantitatif hubungan kekerabatan bahasa-bahasa Minahasa dengan menggunakan penghitungan leksikostatistik. Kajian ini berdasarkan pada data 107 kosa kata dasar bahasa Tnd, Tns, Tmb, dan Tnt. Data dianalisis dengan metode rekonstruksi kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Inovasi bahasa Tnd, Tns, Tmb, dan Tnt menunjukkan adanya relasi dua subkelompok bahasa. Kelompok pertama adalah bahasa Tnd dan Tns dan kelompok kedua adalah bahasa Tmb dan Tnt. Dari hasil penghitungan leksikostatistik, persentasi kognat menunjukkan bahwa hal itu merupakan relasi dialek dari bahasa yang sama. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahasa Tnd, Tns, Tmb, dan Tnt di Minahasa diturunkan oleh bahasa yang sama, yaitu Etimon Proto Minahasa.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms, utterance settings, and functions of mahalabiufor the Banjar community. It employed the qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with informants. The findings are as follows. First, there are two forms of mahalabiu, i.e. (a) humorous stories and (b) short phrases or sentences. Second, the utterance of mahalabiu takes account of two aspects, i.e. (a) spatial, temporal, and situational settings, and (b) the speaker and listener. Third, mahalabiu is effective as a means of maintaining the Banjar language and as a medium of social criticism. The Banjar language in mahalabiu is not much influenced by other local languages or the Indonesian language in terms of the vocabulary and syntax.

Abstract

This study examines interrogative sentences in Indonesian by focusing on speechfunctions. The data were interrogative sentences in Indonesian nowadays used incommunication among ethnic groups. It employed the pragmatic approach stating thatwhen one is saying a sentence at the same time s/he is performing an action called aspeech act. An interrogative sentence, which is basically used to ask a question aboutsomething, can also be used to express a variety of speech acts. The findings show that there are four speech acts expressed by interrogative sentences, namely representative, directive, comissive, and expressive acts. Interrogative sentences are sometimes used to express indirect speech acts to maintain politeness (to soften the tone) or to express something firmly, rudely, and even impolitely.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kadar kebermaknaan komponen materi serta ketepatan komponen konstruksi dan bahasa soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Indonesia (UN BI). Sumber data penelitian adalah soal UN BI SMA/MA 2012 dengan sampel kelompok IPA satu dan IPS tiga set soal. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik pembacaan dan pencatatan, sedang analisis data dengan teknik deskriptif kualitatifdengan dibantu statistik deskriptif yang berupa penghitungan frekuensi pemunculan dan persentase. Hasil penelitian sebagai berikut. Pertama, secara umum kadar kebermakaan komponen materi sudah baik walaupun belum baik sekali. Sebagian besar butir soal sudahmelibatkan aspek makna dan bahasa sekaligus sehingga mencerminkan kebutuhan orang berbahasa secara nyata. Kedua, secara umum ketepatan komponen konstruksi dan bahasa juga sudah cukup baik. Sebagian besar butir soal sudah memenuhi tuntutan pembuatan soal yang benar. Namun, secara relatif masih banyak ditemukan  kekurangtepatanpenggunaan berbagai aspek kebahasaan, bahkan ada yang salah yang menunjukkankekurangtelitian tim penyusun dan pengulas soal.
