Abstract

This research study aims to describe the characteristics of the site that includes short stories cyber, the fact of short stories cyber namely plot, character, and setting, and the characteristics of the reader and the author of short stories cyber.The research subjects were short stories cyber in www.kolomkita.com dan  www.kemudian.com that published in April 2008. The data collected through data cards and analyzed by categorizing them in accordance with the predetermined categories.The research finding show that the site that contains short stories cyber determined by its organizer, both vision and personal as admin. Second, sitesthat contain short stories have hardly any cyber script selection process so that cyber short story has some weakness on the resolution of the story, the cultivation of the conflict, climax,character, and setting. A lot of short stories cyber are unfinished and very short. The shortstories writer and reader cyber is a community that found a path from them, by them, andfor them.

Abstract

This study aims to describe perceptions, attitudes, and factors influencing the use of Javanese among career women and the implications for the Javanese preservationin the Yogyakarta area. It was a survey study involving working women whose mother tongue was Javanese. The data were collected through a questionnaire andwere analyzed using the descriptive technique. The findings show that the career women’s perceptions are still positive. This is supported by the fact that they use Javanese in informal communicative situations. They use it in the communication with husbands, children, servants, and community members in informal situations, and colleagues in the workplace. It can be concluded that in informal communicative situations there has been no significant shift from Javanese into Indonesian among career women in the Yogyakarta area.

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan kajian terhadap novel yang ditulis oleh generasi kedua warga negara Amerika keturunan Jepang (Nisei), Monica Sone, yang menyuarakan masalah identitas Nisei dan perjalanan mereka untuk menjadi warga negara Amerika. Kajian ini bertujuan mengetahui masalah identitas diri dan faktorfaktoryang menyebabkannya. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan multidisiplin yang mencakup sejarah, sosiologi, dan sastra. Data dikumpulkan melalui kajian pustaka. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa kelompok Nisei mengalami masalah identitas diri yang diakibatkan oleh kebingungan terhadap posisi kultural dan hukum mereka di Amerika. Masalah tersebut timbul karena faktor internal yang berasal dari masyarakat Amerika keturunan Jepang, yaitu kuatnya budaya Jepang, sehingga mereka berada dalam dua budaya (Amerika dan Jepang), dan faktor eksternal, yaitu rasisme kulit putih, yang menolak mereka sebagai bagian dari kelompok kulit putih meskipun kelompok Nisei adalah warga negara Amerika.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the reading ability and the effectiveness of the Numbered Group Discussion (NGD) learning model in an attempt to improve the article reading ability. It was an experimental study. The data were collected through tests, observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The participants were students of Jurusan Pen¬di¬dikan Bahasa Daerah FPBS UPI. The findings show that the NGD learning model was capable of improving the learning achievement. The students ofthe experimental group learning through the NGD model had an improvement of 3.70 and those of the control group had an improvement of 1.21. In terns of the mastery level, the experimental group improved from the poor category to the moderate category, while the control group was in the poor category. In the literal, inferential, and evaluation aspects, the experimental group showed an improvement from the pretest to the posttest. In relation to the learning process quality, the NGD model can be an effective method for both the students and lecturers.

Abstract

This study aims to identify creative writing aspects and formulate a model for the development of creative writing competence. It was a qualitative study involving literature students from four universities in Surabaya. The data were collected through in-depth interviews. The findings show that only few students have writing experience. The learning model in the campus is one important aspect that can motivate students to write. An ideal model for the development of creative writing competence is one that integrates a variety of aspects that can develop creative writing. Some important aspects include (1) a creative writing course inliterature learning as a compulsory course at universities, (2) theory and practice (practice being more dominant than theory) for literature students, (3) attempts to make lecturers good at writing theory and practice, (4) reading enrichment in quality literary works, and (5) use of creative processes from high quality authors as inspiring part of creative work writing.

Abstract

This study aims to describe similarities in literary works written by authors with different cultural backgrounds, namely Indonesian and Indian. The data sources were Selamat Jalan Nek!, a short story by Danarto (an Indonesian author), and Pohon by Monaj Das (an Indian author). The comparative analysis was done by thoroughly reading and comprehending them, identifying similarity points in the structural aspect, and comparing and interpreting such points. The findings show that sequences of events constituting the plots of the two short stories have similarities from the beginning to the end. The ways the authors present the characters are similar, especially in physiological and sociological aspects of the characters. The themes are also similar, namely conflicts between modernity represented by the young generation and traditionality represented by the old generation. The datashow that the similarities are attributable to analogy.

Abstract

This study aims to describe characteristics of child speakers’ communication strategies in their interaction with a variety of interlocutors in a diglossic society. This study was a longitudinal study involving subjects aged 2 – 5 years. The data were collected through observations, recording with an electronic recorder, and field note cards. The data were analyzed using the performance analysis technique. The findings show that characteristics of child speakers’ communication strategies in their interaction with a variety of interlocutors in a diglossic society appear in the types and type variations, causes, and functions of the use in the process of naturallyacquiring the pragmatic competence.

Abstract

In general this research studies the phenomena of the exlpanations of Indonesian culture in news journalistic discourses (NJD) using the Indonesian language. The main research problem dealt with is, “How is Indonesian culture, which covers characteristics of cultural values, cultural perceptions, and cultural orientations, reflected in news journalistic discourses using the Indonesian language?” This research was systematized by using the qualitative approach. It belongs to interpretive discourse analysis. The methods include (1) text ethnography, (2)phenomenology, and (3) cultural-hermeneutics. The analytical stages utilize the principals and techniques of data analysis found in descriptive discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis. The data are texts on NJD, which are in the forms of words, sentences, and paragraphs with their macro-aspects, superstructure, andmicro-aspects. The sources of the data are nationally printed and regionally printed mass media (Kompas and Jawa Pos respectively). Research findings of the study are reported as follows. The characteristics of Indonesian cultural values reflectedin the macro-aspect included subaspects of thematization and thematic structure ofNJD. The perceptions of Indonesian culture reflected in the superstructure aspect included subaspects of contextualization pattern and realization of NJD. Moreover,the orientations of Indonesian culture as reflected in the micro-aspect included subaspect of meaning representation patterns, lexicalization, grammaticalization, and rhetoric of NJD.182
