Abstract

Egyptian Revolution (Nile Revolution) in February 2011 was totally moved by the desire and struggle conducted by the Egyptian young people, without considering the tribal entity and identity, ethnic group, not even religion. The absence of Islamic yells and lack of significant role from Islamist groups, in the time of demonstration, indicated that the fascination of ‘ideological Islam’ has faded in the Pyramida country. In contrast, Muslim Arabian revolunionists did not anymore give priority to Islamic symbols in their socio- political great effort, other than to common values and ideals, i.e. democracy and freedom. This also occurred to Ikhwān al-Muslimīn movement, which is said now as completing a reformation of ideology and method. When previously the violation was their ultimate agenda in achieving the goal, whereas recently they have adopted a way of democracy. The experience of poltical-Islam depolitization in the country seemed to change Ikhwān al-Muslmīn to award superiority on negotiation and democracy.

Abstract

The movements of multiculturalism, multiethnic and multireligion in the Australian socio- demographic—as implication of migrant policy in the ’1960s—have supported the Australian government to conduct socio-political engineering based on multiculturalism as the state ideology. This policy is pointed to eradicate value and norm conflicts which have frequently existed in between ‘white people,’ in one hand, and immigrants, on the other. Australia seems more successful in handling over such conflict, as indicated from low- rate presentation of political, ethnical and religious-affairs harshness, including terrorism, compared to other countries, especially its neighbors. This implication of multiculturalism has also emerged in the progress of Muslim society which is protected by their cultural heritages that until now still endure and develop, although are still suspected as having conflict potencies, particularly Islamophobia attitudes from the Australian non- Muslims. There are positive and negative effects in the Australian policy of multiculturalism.

Abstract

Historically and culturally speaking, since the late 1990’s, ‘modern’ Reiki and meditation techniques and practices have impacts on the Indonesian people. The globalization of Reiki on healing attunement that is generated from the Reiki’s meditation technique also has its influences in Islamic traditional wisdom. This Reiki global movement has apparently invoked the traditional syncretistic style of some Indonesian Muslim. In turn, this situation creates political tension between the radical and puritan Islam vis a vis the Muslim Reiki’s masters. Using comparative studies, this paper is based on the current phenomenon of Islam engaged with Reiki and attempts to explore the politics of Reiki as a global product and its relation to the responses within Indonesian Muslim, historically and sociologically, through which we can observe the dynamics dialogue in practice between Buddhism and Islamic Sufism.

Abstract

Theologically and historically, Islam can not be separated from other religions. However, the shape and style off the relationship in between them have taken place according to certain context and specific historical trajectory. Occasionally, this relationship was polemical, but more frequently it occurred in more dialogical nuance. Nevertheless, the principle of the relationship between Islam and other religions is similar, in the line of Qur'ānic teachings and as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad in his life times, i.e. to affirm and respect other religions’ existence, and to bestow freedom that their followers could practice their faith respectively. This is as articulated by Dale F. Eickelman, a contemporary Islamicist, "The Qur'ān offers a distinctly modern perspective on the role of Islam as a force for tolerance and mutual recognition in a multiethnic, multicommunity world." This article proves that the Qur'ān accepts differences and diversities existing in human society; it even receives more specific views concerning to the plurality of believe and religious laws.

Abstract

Postmodernism is a critical reflection on the paradigms of modernism and the era of the rise of religious spirituality. In this respect, the emergence of social theory in the perspective of postmodernism makes the approach and methodology of religious studies growing richer. Among these are the Foucauldian approach, Derrida’s and Habermas’ concepts. Apart from that, discourse of Foucauldian dealing with archaeological- genealogical perspective in complementary can form a critical perspective for religious studies, and socially unveil the workings of a regional and practical power relation. In addition, the perspective of deconstruction by Derrida offers not only a way to read a text, but also social reality, to undermine the status of a dominant and repressive discourse and other social practices. In fact, Habermas’ critical theory in the style of criticism is against the methodology creating ‘religious’ discourse which is impartial and oppressive.

Abstract

This article explains that Ibn ‘Arabī professed the transcendent unity of religions which is shown by the data on unity of essence, unity of the divinity, unity of source or origin of the path, unity of source of the scriptures, unity of purpose of worship, and the Religion of Love. This study finding shows in a strong way that the unity of religions lies in the transcendent or esoteric territory, i.e. it goes beyond formal religious forms such as religious law, sharī‘ah, doctrine and ritual. On the historical forms of religion there are many differences and even conflicts one each other. Though different in form, these differences among religions are not absolute, independent and separate, but bounded by a single entity, i.e. both from God Almighty, and will culminate in Him as well. However, on the historical form Ibn ‘Arabī claimed the perfection of Islam, and simoultaneusly criticized the religion and non-Islamic beliefs. This last fact has been ignored by the scholars, both Islam and the West, who believe the theory of the transcendent unity of religions.
