Abstract

This text is an effort to make Ilmu Kalam (Islamic theology) an applied science. Now is the right time to revive the study of Ilmu Kalam by reorienting its methods and core topics towards more practical applications, so that this discipline once again becomes a rich, intelligent, and inspiring intellectual heritage of Islam for solving the problems of humanity. This reorientation effort is not at all intended to dismantle a scientific structure that is already so solid; rather, it is meant to enrich the great and brilliant discipline of Ilmu Kalam. However, this greatness and brilliance will be in vain if not accompanied by efforts to revitalize it in accordance with its current significance.

One of the traditions in the Muslim community is reading or studying the Kitab Kuning (classical Islamic texts). There are quite a variety of Kitab Kuning that are read in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) or study groups, one of which is the book Durrat al-Nāṣiḥīn. This text is a summary of the author’s dissertation at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) titled A Study of Hadith in the Book Durrat al-Nāṣiḥīn.

Abstract

The modernization of Sunnah is an effort to renew the interpretation of Sunnah by purifying it from all kinds of superstitions, innovations (bid’ah), and myths. The modernization of Sunnah is divided into several areas of study, namely Sunnah related to social life, Sunnah āḥād which has a status of zhannī al-dilālah (probable indication), and Sunnah with an unclear status. Additionally, the modernization of Sunnah must be undertaken by experts in the sciences of Sunnah and Hadith, both in terms of narration (riwāyah) and comprehension (dirāyah).

Abstract

These writing attempts to explain the epistemological construction of the methods of exegesis (tafsir), allegorical interpretation (ta’wīl), and hermeneutics. Epistemologically, several points can be put forward. Firstly, exegesis tends to emphasize an objectivist nature, based on a linguistic approach. On the other hand, allegorical interpretation tends to emphasize a subjectivist nature, relying on an intuitive and rational approach. Meanwhile, hermeneutics tends to emphasize an intersubjectivist nature, utilizing historical, sociological, and psychological approaches. Secondly, the source of knowledge according to exegesis is the text, whereas according to allegorical interpretation it is inner experience. Meanwhile, hermeneutics considers the source of knowledge to be the textual world, as well as the worlds of the author and the reader. Thirdly, the criterion for scholarly validity used in the tradition of exegesis is the similarity or closeness between the text and its meaning. In contrast, the criterion for scholarly validity used in the tradition of allegorical interpretation can only be directly sensed and experienced through intuition, taste (dzauq), or psycho-gnosis. Meanwhile, the criterion for scholarly validity used in the tradition of hermeneutics is more dialogical and dialectical, involving the interplay between the textual world, the world of the author, and the world of the reader.

Abstract

I argue in this paper that the 9/11 phenomenon was not individual problem, but a problem of larger social issues. In the introduction of this paper, I clarify the above statement by Peter Berger in light of C. Wright Mills’ idea of the sociological imagination. Having clarified this, I discuss the behavior of the 9/11 hijackers in light of conflict and functionalist-oriented paradigms.

Abstract

Dynamic Sufism (tasawuf tahriki in Arabic) develops positive thinking and realistic behavior about of paradigm of the material, spiritual and moral. Sufis are convinced anticorruption. Corruption in Indonesia especially has been in a virus, savage cancer and serious condition and its dangers are out of ordering state and civil society life in the fields of politics (money politics), economy (legal ling all ways obtain money and wealth) and law (manipulation of facts). Problem solving these phenomena, anticorruption movements have been done everywhere, either by an individual, the state or social organization, however, its result is not yet satisfactory. One of the effective methods (tariqah) according to dynamic Sufism perspective to solve corruption (fasad or risywah in al-Qur’an and tradition term), collusion and nepotism stressing corruption is a polytheism (syirik). It is a pity, corruption is not yet awarded or realized of one of polytheistic existence. In a polytheistic context necessary is interpreted by perspective of dynamic Sufism. Polytheism (syirik) indicate a long time public and environment corruption and humankind suffering. Corrupters must be heavily punished and psychotherapy in order to be cured of a psychological disease and moral hazard or immoral.

Abstract

Human beings and the environment are entities whose existence is natural and ordained. Naturally, a relationship has been established between them since the creation. The quality of the relationship between humans and the environment is determined by the quality of human thought, behavior, and conduct within their surroundings. The standard for evaluating the goodness or badness of this relationship is not solely determined by humans unilaterally, but by an absolute standard, which is the law of God (Sunatullah). This is a consequence of humans being chosen and appointed as stewards of Allah in maintaining the balance of life on Earth. This writing explains the intended relationship, which is capable of building a holistic system of righteousness to achieve peace and prosperity blessed by the pleasure of Allah SWT.
